Under

the Sea

Objectives:

1. Students will compose short songs using pitched and non-pitched percussion

for a certain sea creature.

2. Students will practice sound/silence patterns.

Standards Addressed:

1. K.4 The student will play a variety of pitched and nonpitched instruments

alone and with others, including

a. 1. demonstrating high and low;

b. 2. demonstrating loud/soft and fast/slow; and

2. K.7 The student will respond to music with movement, including

a. 5. exhibiting respect for the personal space of others when moving

3. K.8 The student will create music by

a. 1. improvising simple melodic or rhythmic patterns;

4. MU:Cr1.1.Kb With guidance, generate musical ideas (such as movements or

motives)

Materials:

1. Hula Hoops

2. Various puppets/stuffed animals of sea creatures.

a. Shark, Octopus, Dolphin, goldfish, and turtle.

3. Pitched and non pitched percussion instruments.

a. Drums, Glockenspiels and Xylophones (Pentatonic), tambourines,

rhythm sticks.

5. Swimmy by Leo Lioni

6. Recording of Sea Cruise and Turtle Rock

7. Recording of Carnival of Animals: Aquarium by Saint Saens

Procedures:

First 30 minute Block

1. Warm Up (5 minutes)

a. Hello Song (Sung by Heather)

b. Movement Activity to Turtle Rock

i. 32 beats of air guitar

ii. 36 beats of stomps (8 left, 8 right etc)

iii. 36 counts of turtle arms

iv. 36 counts of modified mashed potato

v. 28 counts of turtle arms

vi. 36 counts of swimming arms

vii. Allow students to create movements and lead the group for the

rest of the song.

2. There was a Little Turtle Fingerplay activity (5 minutes) Show Turtle Puppet!

3. Where are we going in Music Class today? song (2 minutes)

4. Read Swimmy by Leo Lioni while while Carnival of Animals VII: Aquarium by

Saint-Saens plays in the background. ( 8 minutes)

i. What animals did you see in the book?

ii. What sounds did you hear while we were reading the book?
iii. What sounds reminded you of water/the ocean?

5. Five Little Fishies Activity (5 minutes)

6. If time, Review Wishy Washy

7. If time, hand out scarves, and have students create movements to different

sea creatures while listening to Under the Sea.

Second 30 minute Block

8. Warm Up ( 5 minutes)

iii. 32 beats of side step with arms

iv. 32 beats of Grease arms (8 left, 8 right, etc).

viii. 32 beats of air guitar

ix. 32 beats of twist

x. 32 beats of side step with arms

xi. 32 beats of Grease arms (8 left, 8 right) etc.

9. Read Octopuss Garden book (5 minutes)

10. Small Group composition

a. Students will be divided into 4 or 5 groups. Each group will be sent to

a Hula Hoop with various pitched and non pitched percussive

instruments. Each Hula Hoop will also have a picture or stuffed animal

of a sea creature. (10-12 minutes)

b. Groups will have 5 to 8 minutes to create a song or jingle for their sea

creature.

c. Groups will share what they came up with at the end of their time.

11. 5 Little Fishies Song and Movement Activity review. (5 minutes)

12. This my Turtle Fingerplay review. (3 minutes)

Extra Time:

1. Review Wishy Washy
