The Monk Stra is part of the Nidnasamyukta, a collection of non-


Mahyna Stras focusing on dependent arising.

Thus I have heard.


ekasmin samaye bhagavn kuruu viharati kalmadamye nigame |

At one time, the Bhagavat was dwelling among the Kurus, in the
village of Kalmadamya.


anyataro bhikur yena bhagavs tenopajagma |

A monk approached the place where the Bhavagat was.


upetya bhagavatpdau iras vanditvaiknte 'stht |
He went closer, saluted with his head the feet of the Bhagavat, and
remained on one side.


ekntasthita sa bhikur bhagavantam idam avocat |

Staying on one side, the monk said to the Bhagavat:


kin nu bhagavat prattyasamutpda kta aho svid anyai |

Was dependent arising created by the Bhagavat, or by others?


na bhiko may prattyasamutpda kto npy anyai |

Monk, dependent arising was not created by me, nor by others.


api ttpdd v tathgatnm anutpdd v sthit eveya dharmat
dharmasthitaye dhtu |

On the contrary, whether the Tathgatas arise or not, this Dharmat is


fixed, it is the basis for the abiding of the Dharma.



ta tathgata svayam abhijybhisabuddhykhyti prajapayati
prasthpayati vibhajati vivaraty uttnkaroti deayati saprakayati |

The Tathgata realizes and awakens to that, then makes it known,


establishes, analyzes, expounds, elaborates upon, teaches, and clarifies
it.


yadutsmin satda bhavaty asyotpdd idam utpadyate |

It is thus: this being there, this occurs, from the arising of this, this
arises.


yadutvidypratyay saskr yvat samudayo nirodha ca bhavati ||

It is thus: co-producing factors have ignorance as their condition, up


to, there is arising and cessation.

A monk approached the place where the Blessed One was. He went closer, saluted with his head the
feet of the Blessed One, and remained on one side.Staying on one side, the monk said to the Blessed
One:

Was dependent arising made by the Blessed One, or by others?

Monk, dependent arising was not made by me, and not by others. On the other hand, whether the
Tathgatas arise or not, this Dharmat is fixed, it is the basis for the abiding of the Dharma. The
Tathgata realizes and awakens to that, then makes it known, establishes, analyzes, expounds,
elaborates upon, teaches, and clarifies it. It is thus: this being there, that occurs, from the arising of
this that arises. It is thus: formations have ignorance as their condition, up to, there is arising and
cessation.
