To further streamline SKF customer service
a number of items from the broad assortment
of SKF bearings has been carefully selected.
These make up the S-Range, application orientated
bearing ranges for specific application areas.
The selection of each S-Range item is based on
wide SKF experience in the bearing application
field, built through contact with bearing users
all over the world.
It is SKF policy to supply virtually every type
of bearing to meet customer requirements. But
with S-Range, SKF now offers customers addi-
tional benefits:

For each crop a similar process is used,
i.e. the soil is worked, the seed is sown, the
soil is fertilized, pests are controlled; the
crop is then harvested and stored. Every
stage in this process requires its own special
type of machine which is now either drawn
by a tractor or is self-propelled, according to
the working conditions.

S-Range of bearings for

When selecting the bearings for inclusion in
this S-Range, the operating and environmen-
tal conditions , the wide experience gained
by SKF within the agricultural industry over
many years, plus the present knowledge of
future developments in this application field,
were all taken into account.
Units, such as gearboxes, typical trans-
missions, pumps, compressors, fans etc.,
which are normally supplied complete by the
various manufacturers for inclusion in agri-
cultural machinery, are not dealt with here;
the bearings for these units will be found in
the appropriate S-Range.
In addition to rolling bearings SKF com-
panies also manufacture complete wheel
units, pulleys , cam followers, rollers, plain
bearings, rod ends, ball screws, actuators
etc. which can be used in agricultural
machinery. Full information about these
special products is available from SKF on
request.
The complete S-Range of bearings for
agricultural machinery is shown, in matrix
form, on pages 12 to 23.
A wide range of housings is available for
the various bearing types, see pages 38
to 39.
Bearing types
Deep groove ball bearings
Deep groove ball bearings are widely used in
all agricultural applications; compared with
self-aligning ball bearings they can take rela-
tively heavy axial loads. Unlike Y-bearings
and self -aligning ball bearings , however,
deep groove ball bearings have a limited
ability to accommodate errors of alignment ,
and this must be taken into consideration
when designing the bearing hou sing.
Self-aligning ball bearings
These bearings are included in this S-Range
mainly because of their ability to accommo-
date misalignment. A gradual changeover to
cages of glass fibre reinforced polyamide
(designation suffix TN9) is being carried out.

Angular contact ball bearings
Single row angular contact ball bearings can
carry axial loads in one direction only. A
radial load imposed on the bearing induces
an axial force in the bearing which must be
counteracted. For this reason the bearing is
normally adjusted against a second bearing.
SKF single row angular contact ball bearings
with designation suffix B have a contact
angle of 40 and are suitable for heavy axial
loads. They are non-separable and can oper-
ate at relatively high speeds. A special de-
sign of these bearings is that designated by
suffix G and is intended for paired mount-
mg.
Double row angular contact ball bearings
correspond in function to two single row
bearings arranged back-to-back. They can
accommodate axial loads in both directions
as well as tilting moments.
Cylindrical roller bearings
SKF single row cylindrical roller bearings
are manufactured in a number of designs
which differ in the flange configuration.
Bearings of types NU and NJ have been in-
cluded in this S-Range. Type NU bearings
have two integral flanges on the outer ring
and a flangeless inner ring. They permit
axial displacement of the housing relative to
the shaft within certain limits in both direc-
tions and are therefore used as non-locating
bearings.
Bearings of type NJ have two integral
flanges on the outer ring and one on the
inner ring and can therefore be used for
axial location of the shaft in one direction.
SKF has recently introduced a new stan-
dard design of cylindrical roller bearing
which has increased radial and axial load
carrying capacities and a cage of glass fibre
reinforced polyamide (ECP design). These
have been included in this S-Range, see
matrix on page 18.

Spherical roller bearings
Spherical roller bearings are used where a
high load carrying capacity and misalignment
accommodation are required. The CC design
spherical roller bearings included in this
S-Range have a high speed capability and
give low running temperatures even under
relatively high axial loads.
Taper roller bearings
Taper roller bearings are particularly suitable
for carrying combined (radial and axial)
loads, The bearings are of separable design,
i.e. the outer ring (cup) and the inner ring
with roller and cage assembly (cone) may be
mounted separately.
Single row taper roller bearings can carry
axial loads in one direction only. A radial
load imposed on the bearing gives rise to an
induced axial load which must be counter-
acted; the bearing is therefore generally
adjusted against a second bearing.
Thrust ball bearings
Single direction thrust ball bearings are suit-
able for the accommodation of axial loads in
one direction and can locate a shaft in one
direction; they may not, however, be sub-
jected to radial loads.
Single direction thrust ball bearings com-
prise a shaft washer, a housing washer and a
ball and cage assembly. The bearings are
separable and mounting is simple as the
components can be mounted individually.
Y-bearings
These provide economical solutions and are
widely used in agricultural machines. They
are basically deep groove ball bearings
which have a sphered outside diameter, inte-
gral seals and a normal or an extended inner
ring; they can carry medium radial and axial
loads.
When mounted in a housing the sphered
outside diameter and the corresponding
sphered seating in the housing permit a cer-
tain degree of initial misalignment to be
accommodated. The wide inner ring can be
locked on the shaft either by an eccentric
ring or grub screws according to the series
type. This feature enables these bearings to
be quickly and easily mounted on or dis-
mounted from standard drawn steel shafts.
The integral rubbing seals have been
specially designed. The rubber seal is
bonded to a metal insert which is fitted in
the outer ring and, as there is then only a
small gap between insert and shaft, it pro-

vi des protection against fibres, dirt and
stones, as well as preventing damage to the
seal lip. Under very arduous working con-
ditions the seals of Y -bearings with
extended inner ring can be further improved
and protected by incorporating steel flingers
in the arrangement. The best protection is
achieved with flocked flingers where the
fibres act like a brush against the outer ring,
thus closing the entrance to the rubber lip of
the seal.
SKF Y-bearings are supplied ready-filled
with a suitable rust-inhibiting lithium base
grease. Relubrication is not normally necess-
ary, but if required, especially when working
in a wet and very dirty environment, pro-

vision has been made to relubricate bearings
mounted in cast iron housings. Full infor-
mation regarding specially designed housings
which include plummer blocks, flange units
and take-up units for these bearings is given
in the SKF catalogue "Y -bearing units".

Selection of bearing

SIZe
The bearing size can be determined by using
the standard calculation procedure given in
the SKF General Catalogue and information,
such as applied loads and speeds, which is
normally available.
Generally, Y-bearings are selected from
experience. For most applications, if the
selection is made to suit the shaft diameter,
the corresponding load carrying capacity of
the Y-bearing is sufficient. A service life of
between 1 000 and 2 000 hours is suitable.

Bearing data
Data on the bearings, with the exception of
Y -bearings and deep groove ball bearings of
series 62 E and 63 E, included in this
S-Range will be found in the SKF General
Catalogue. For Y-bearing data reference
should be made to the SKF catalogue
"Y -bearing units". Data for series 62 E and
63 E bearings will be found on pages 40
and 41.

Dimension Series order (light section series
to the left, heavy to the right) and bearings

Ploughing is the basic tillage operation in
which a layer of soil is separated from the
underlying subsoil and inverted, so that any
vegetation, stubble or manure is buried. The
ploughed land is laid up in furrow slices, the
type of slice or clod depending upon the
type of plough and the nature of the soil.
Cultivators or harrows are then used to
break up the clods and eventually prepare a
fine tilth.
Bearings, in agricultural machines which
work in or close to the soil, operate in a
very arduous environment of dust, mud,
stones, fibres etc. For this reason sealing is
generally the most critical point in design as
foreign matter must be prevented from pen-
etrating to the bearings.
A combination of labyrinths or special
shields and rubber seals together with grease
lubrication generally give excellent service.

ings are generally selected especially when
some misalignment between the housings

Bearing arrangement Lubrication

The bearings are mounted in one-piece
flanged housings because of o_ut-of-balance
forces. The axially locating bearing is
mounted with an interference fit in the hous-
ing to prevent outer ring rotation; for the
non-locating bearing, situated on the drive

fit is suitable. A check must be made to en-
sure that this bearing is free to move axially.

Bearing arrangement
The bearings are directly mounted on a
square shaft, as are the discs and intermedi-
ate spacers. The shaft is free to rotate and is
driven by the action of the soil on the discs,
as the harrow is pulled along. Fig 2 shows
the triple-lip seal bearing with heavy-duty
shields mounted in a special pressed steel
flanged housing; the complete unit is there-
fore very effectively sealed. The housing
consists of two pressed steel components
design.ed to prevent swivelling of the bearing
after the bolts have been tightened. How-
ever, misalignment can be compensated
during installation, where necessary.

Tolerances
The bore dimensions across the flats of the
bearing bore are designed to give a clearance
fit on standard square shafts.

Sowing, planting and fertilizing machinery
Depending on the way a plant ultimately de-
velops , there are two main methods used for
its cultivation, i.e. seeds or plants, and each
method of planting requires its own specific
machines.
Seed drills are generally used. These let
the seeds fall continuously into furrows (e.g.
cereal foods such as wheat, barley, oats
etc.) or feed only one seed at a time at reg-
ular intervals and depths (e.g. sweet corn,
beet etc.). Potatoes are planted in a similar
manner. Sometimes these operations incor-
porate an earthing-up process and this again
requires specially shaped tools.
A similar method is used for young plants
or bulbs but in this case the machines can-
not be fully automated.
Fertilization is achieved by distributing
solid or liquid fertilizer over the ground,
either before or after sowing, using special-
ized equipment such as manure or slurry
spreaders and the various fertilizer dis-
tributors. The latter can also be used for
broadcasting seed.

These distributors are used for seed or arti-
ficial fertilizers; the bearings are therefore
generally incorporated in low power trans-
missions, and are selected to give a compact
and economical arrangement. Double row
angular contact ball bearings and deep
groove ball bearings are preferred, see
matrices.
Lubrication
Oil bath lubrication is used for the deep
groove ball bearing whilst the double row
angular contact ball bearings are grease lu-
bricated. A good quality lithium base grease
such as SKF LGMT2 is recommended.

Bearing arrangement
Fig 3 shows a power transmission arrange-
ment for a centrifugal fertilizer distributor in
which the one mainshaft drives both the dis-
tributor head and the distributor disc shafts.
Double row angular contact ball bearings
carry all the loads emanating from the offset
bevel gear power transmission. Each bearing
is protected from the fertilizer above by a
rubber lip seal, such as a V -ring, together
with an additional protection shield. The
bearings are located in housings which must
be axially set to obtain correct meshing of
the bevel gears .

Bearing arrangement
The bearings carry the rotor which spreads
the manure on the fields. In fig 4 the bear-
ings are mounted in cast iron flanged hous-
ings which are fitted to the trailer frame.
Sealing of the bearing on the inside is
greatly improved by the labyrinth formed by
the adjacent components; this prevents
fibres from reaching the bearing seal. On
the outside of the bearing an end cover,
supplied by SKF, has been incorporated to
protect the bearing seal, but considering the
rotating shaft end, it is also an improvement
safety-wise. Details of suitable end covers
will be found in the SKF General Catalogue
and the SKF catalogue "Y -bearing units".

Lubrication
The bearings are supplied ready-filled with a
suitable grease and no relubrication is gen-
erally required, especially in this case where
the extra sealing is good. According to what
type of manure is being used relubrication
may be necessary and provision has been
made for this in SKF cast iron Y -bearing
housings. A suitable good quality lithium
base grease, such as SKF LGMT3, should
be used and great care must be exercised to
ensure that the grease nipples are cleaned at
the time of relubrication. The grease should
be introduced slowly until fresh grease
exudes from the seals.

Cereal crops

Only light power is required to drive the
spiral, therefore the pressed steel units are
adequate. Because these units are mounted
on the steel plate frame, see fig 5, the self-
alignment facility of the bearings in the
housing is very useful during installation.
The sealed bearing on the conveyor spiral
side is further protected by a special cover
with a small clearance bore, mounted on the
frame .

Protection for the bearing is provided by a
labyrinth and an additional rubber seal
above the bearing. The rubber seal beneath
the bearing prevents oil from coming up
from the gearbox sump during operation and
also when the mower is lifted up to a verti-
cal position for transportation.
As out-of-balance forces may occur at
the rotary disc level an interference fit for
the bearing in its housing is generally used; a
bearing with a radial internal clearance
greater than Normal, e.g. C3, is rec-
ommended.

they are specially protected by heavy-duty

Axles for agricultural machinery
A high proportion of farm work consists of
the movement of products and supplies,
such as feeding stuffs, manure and other
aids to production. This involves the use of
various types of trailers and machines which
are highly mobile, some of them semi-
mounted or self-propelled.
Nowadays, almost every agricultural
machine has some means of transportation
incorporated, which means that a large num-
ber of wheels and axles are used and these
include bearings which have been selected to
accommodate the weight of the machines
etc.

Bearing arrangement
According to the type of machine, axles
which incorporate two hubs or semi-axles
which incorporate one hub mounted in the
machine frame, can be used.
In fig 9 the deep groove ball bearings are
mounted with an interference fit in the hub
against shoulders, and with a clearance fit
on the shaft. Each bearing is capable of
carrying axial loads.
Deep groove ball bearings provide an
economical arrangement as the hubs can be
easily mounted and located on the shafts
with very simple adjustment. If the larger
bearing is provided with one rubber lip type
seal on the outside, sealing of the hub is
greatly simplified.

Bearing arrangement
Complete axles incorporating two hubs are
generally used. Two taper roller bearings
mounted back-to-back, see fig 10, carry the
radial and axial loads. The inner taper roller
bearing is mounted against a spacer the
outer diameter of which serves as a land for
the garter seal. The bearings are axially
secured by a nut which is also used to obtain
correct adjustment of the bearings.
