4
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Operational Amplifiers (Op-Amp)
Uses
Among the most widely used electronic devices
Used for signal conditioning, filtering, and to
perform mathematical operations
Functions as line driver, comparator, amplifier, level
shifter, oscillator, actuator driver, current source,
and voltage source

5
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Operational Amplifiers (Op-Amp)
Characteristics
High gain amplifier with two inputs & one output
Open loop voltage gain can be as high as 250,000
(no feedback)
Closed loop voltage gain uses degenerative
(negative) feedback to control gain
Input to output phase relationship determined by
input lead(s) used
Very high input impedance, low output impedance

Operation Open Loop
Open Loop Configurations
Inverting Amplifier
- Input to minus (-) sign

Non-inverting Amplifier
- Input to plus (+) sign

Differential Amplifier
- Input to both leads
9
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Operational Amplifiers (Op-Amp)
Operation Open Loop
Inverting amplifier with open loop gain
Output will be amplified and 180 out of phase
with the input signal

10
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Operational Amplifiers (Op-Amp)
Operation Open Loop
Non-inverting amplifier with open loop gain
Output signal is amplified and in phase with
the input signal

11
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Operational Amplifiers (Op-Amp)
Operation Open Loop
Differential amplifier with open loop gain (inputs in
phase)
Output will be the difference between the two
inputs multiplied by the amplifiers gain
Largest input determines output phase

12
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Operational Amplifiers (Op-Amp)
Operation Open Loop
Differential amplifier with open loop gain (inputs in
phase)
Inputs equal in amplitude and in phase results in 0
volts output

13
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Operational Amplifiers (Op-Amp)
Operation Closed Loop
CLOSED LOOP Uses external degenerative
(negative) feedback to control the gain.
Degenerative feedback is achieved by connecting
a resistor (R2) between the output lead and the
inverting input lead (-)

14
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Operational Amplifiers (Op-Amp)
Operation Closed Loop
Gain is determined by the ratio between input
resistance (R2) and feedback resistance (R1)
Gain = R2/R1
For example: if R1 = 2k & R2 = 20k, gain is 20k/2k
= 10 20k
