Codebreakers: Second Edition
by Katie Turk
Howdy there! Do you like codes? And did you attempt the puzzles in the previous edition of
Codebreakers? Well, if you did, then get ready for another fun issue! This issue, well be focusingmore
on substitution ciphers. (The answers to last times edition will be at the end of this article.)
Substitution ciphers are fairly simple: you just assign every letter in the alphabet a different
symbol or letter or something like that. The onlyproblemisifyoudontpicksomethingmemorable, you
cant memorizeyourcodeeasilyandyoullhavetocarryaroundanalphabetkeyorsomething.Sotryand
pick something easy to remember. You coulddoasimplereversealphabet, whereAisZ,BisY,andvice
versa. (And so on.) Of course, you could
Decode messages by cutting the message in half as closely as possible: HGY | IUS. Then take
one letter from the beginning of each side. H, I, G, U...you get the idea.
Try it out! Encode the messageCOMEFORAPLAYDATE.Ifyoureenjoyingit,DECODEthe
message YUOV DTOS LEI.
If you really like rail fence cipher, try a 3-line rail fence cipher! What are those, eh? Well, you
have to continue the zigzag pattern like so:
H Y
I U S
Which becomes HYIUSG. Decoding these is a bit trickier. To solve these, you have to drawout
the zigzag pattern, with boxes instead of letters, andputinthelettersrowbyrow.Toprow,HandYso
on. Next, read the letters on the diagonal. What do you get?
Try your skills on the 3-line rail fence cipher COER SHCL TCER EOAH I.
Next week well cover the Key Word cipher - and the answer!
