Categories for Rounds


1. Spelling:
Greek & Latin Roots, Commonly misspelled words, homophones, Words with unstressed vowel
2. Antonyms & Synonyms
3. Idiomatic Expressions
4. English Proverbs
5. Word Scramble:
Make as many new words as you can out of a given word.

Criteria
1. 1:30 hours
2. Each Colour Group will be represented by one person each from the various Grade Levels (i.e, Pre-IG, IG
and IB)
3. ROUND ONE SPELLING

Each colour group will have 15 seconds to spell a word in each sub-category; groups may choose to ask
that the word be read in a sentence. A correct answer will earn 3 points. If the group cannot correctly spell
the word, it will be passed on for a bonus point of 1.

4. ROUND TWO ANTONYMS AND SYNONYMS

Each colour group will have 15 seconds to give the antonym or synonym for the specific underlined word
in the sentence. A correct answer will earn 3 points. If the group cannot correctly give the antonym or
synonym, it will be passed on for a bonus point of 1.

5. ROUND THREE IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS

Each colour group will be given the idiomatic expression in a sentence. They will have 15 seconds to
provide the meaning of the idiom for 3 points. If they cannot correctly explain the idiom, it will be
passed on for a bonus point of 1.

6. ROUND FOUR WORD SCRAMBLE

Each colour group will have 3 minutes to make as many new words as possible out of a given word. (e.g.
difficult: cult, lit, fit, cud, flit, etc.) Points earned will depend on the number of words each group is able
to form i.e. Each colour group will earn 1 point for each word.
7. ROUND FIVE ENGLISH PROVERBS
Essie
Natasha
Baaba
Each colour group will be given the beginning of a well-known proverb, and they must finish it for 3
points. (e.g., When in Rome). If they cannot correctly complete the proverb, it will be passed on for a
bonus point of 1.

8. In the event of a tie between colour groups, there will be another round of 3 questions to be answered by
a buzzer.
