order for United Way to be able to bridge the gap for endless opportunities and resources. The

United way has over 130 partnership agencies through out the state of Delaware in which they

collaborate with to better serve the community.

STREGTHS, TRENDS, AND CHALLENGES

There are three strategic areas of focus that guides the United Ways community

commitment to Delaware. These areas were distinguished as the core areas due to the findings

based off of the needs within the communities as a whole. The three areas are as follows;

Foundation for Educational Success, Youth Development Leading to College and/or Career

Readiness, and Economic Stability and Financial Empowerment.

These three areas of strategic planning are based within the promising communities of

the state of Delaware. These communities of promise are areas in the state in which have the

need for support and engagement. It is with a high level of understanding that these communities

of promise are determined appropriate in their need for a committed focus for improvement.

One of the trends that the United Way of Delaware is currently focusing on is the

Economic Empowerment and Financial Stability. The issue that the community is facing is that

Delawareans are living at or near poverty level in which they are pressured by employment

instability and either have a lack of sufficient education or vocational training. This trend also

focuses on how the stress of poverty also creates unemployment, crime, incarceration, divorces,

and homelessness. United Way of Delaware has created programs in order to better empower the

community and to make a positive impact within the current trend.

THE INTERNSHIP ROLE

The job summary of a United Way of Delaware intern is as follows: While specific

and exist for the purpose of supporting the overall vision, mission, goals, and mantra (Give,

Advocate, Volunteer) of the organization (UnitedWayofDelaware,2017). Within this

description of the internship follows various written expectations and outcomes for all nine areas

of the company. These areas include Resource Development, Finance, Marketing, Community

Engagement, Community Impact, Administration, Human Resources, Delaware 211, and the

Executive Division.

Aside from the written description of the United Way of Delaware internship, there is an

internship expectation checklist above the internship workplace. The checklist is a way to

communicate the unofficial expectations of a United Way intern. The checklist includes valuing

time, showing initiative, learning teamwork, and working fairly. The checklist also states that an

intern is expected to learn something in the internship experience that one can apply not only to

the classroom or the work setting, but also within oneself for the purpose of better oneself. The

list ends with two final points; Dont let adversity stop you, and Dont take the internship for

granted. This unwritten list was produced by a group of interns themselves who made the most

out of their experience at United Way of Delaware.
