Lesson Plan: Tyler Read

Date: November 17th, 2016

Subject: Math Grade: 8
Topic: Essential Question (from unit, if applicable):
How to show multiplying and dividing of integers in a creative way

Materials:
-Outline for creation of the guide
-Multiplication page
-Division page
-Examples page
- Unique Page (A page where students can show a creative example of the
outcome)
-White Paper to create good copy
-Computer access (if needed for good copy)

Stage 1- Desired Results you may use student friendly

language
What do they need to understand, know, and/or able to do?

Outcome(s): N8.5, Demonstrate understanding of multiplication and division of

integers concretely, pictorially, and symbolically

PGP Goals: 2.4 ability to use technologies readily, strategically and

appropriately, 3.1 the ability to utilize meaningful, equitable and
holistic approaches to assessment and evaluation

Stage 2- Assessment

Assessment FOR Learning (formative) Assess the students during

the learning to help determine next steps.
- Go through strategies of multiplying and dividing integers at
the start of the lesson with the class to see if there is a
general understanding of the concepts

Assessment OF Learning (summative) Assess the students after

learning to evaluate what they have learned.
- Read over Guide that the students create to see if examples,
strategies and organization show a correct understanding of
the material
Stage 3- Procedures:

Motivational/Anticipatory Set (introducing topic while engaging the

students)

To review strategies to multiply and divide fractions I will use the

Chocolate bar example
- Take a chocolate bar and ask how many pieces you will give
out.
- Then ask another student how many pieces of the Chocolate
bar they want
- The amount the first student took is positive, the amount the
second student took is negative, how much did the first
student get compared to the second student
- Once this is done imagine it using groups of chocolate bars,
this will transition them form adding/subtracting to
multiplying and division.
- Once they understand ask the students to show an example
in there notes of a chocolate bar problem

Main Procedures/Strategies:

- The students will create a Guide on how to multiple fractions

and a Guide on how to Divide fractions. Then they will show
the guides to another student and receive feedback if they
understand what the guide is telling them
- Each student will have a collection of problems (Example:
-6X-4), that they will need to include in their guide. When
showing their guide to another student they should see if the
guide correct gives instructions on how to solve the problem
- After showing it to another student, each student will re-write
their guide in a good copy, adding pictures and other visuals
to personalize it
- After the good copy is complete they will hand it into the
teachers

Closing of lesson:

- Once the guides are complete and have been assessed by

the teacher the teacher should pick a few guides and go
through them with the class to see if the class can get to the
correct answer.
- The teacher should also show different creative examples of
representing the multiplying and dividing guide.
Personal Reflection:
This lesson was a good conclusion and assessment lesson to the
Outcome N8.5 in the grade 8 math curriculum. It allowed students
to show an understanding of multiplying and dividing integers but
gave them a creative way to show their understanding. They were
all very into the creativity of assignment but there was too much
time given for the creation as some student complete the guide in a
very short amount of time. Over all the lesson was a success and a
great way to double check understanding before the test that ends
the unit.
