Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie: Pgs 1-58 Summary

This quarter at RAMS International, we are engaged in reading Sleeping

Freshman Never Lie, a novel written by David Lubar. We have currently read
up to page 58. This review is a quick synopsis of what we have read so far.

In this novel, we experience the world through the mind and eyes of 14 year
old Scott Hudson. Scott is about to start high school at J.P. Zenger High, with
his three best friends Patrick, Kyle, and Mitch. They each have their own
views of how high school will play out. For example, apprehensive Scott
worries about insolent upperclassmen, while girl-crazed Mitch drools over the
thought of hot chicks.

On their first day of school, Scott waits for the bus while conversing with
another student his age, Mouth. There, he sees Julia, a girl he always thought
blended in with the crowd, standing out more than ever. He was infatuated
with how gorgeous she had become over the summer, but could never
muster up the courage to talk to her.

When Scott returns home from school, he is greeted by shocking news from
his mother. She tells him that she is pregnant! Scott was in shock, and
couldnt do anything but sit in his room in disbelief for hours. He decides to
write journal entries for his younger sibling, to prepare him or her for high
school, and share his knowledge, for his older brother could not provide the
information to him.

The next day at school, Scott and his friends watch as their buddy Mitch gets
into a fast-paced relationship, as he spends less and less time with his
friends. When Scott returns from home, he hears a call from troublesome
older brother Bobby, saying that he totaled his car, has stacks upon stacks
of parking fines, and has lost his job, so he moves back into the house. Scott
adds more entries to his journal, the passage is over.
Sleeping Freshman Never Lie: Pgs 59-112 Summary
As we continue reading through our novel, Bobby takes Scott out to
Hobbyland to race around the tracks. But that only lasted 15 minutes as the
owner kicked them out because Bobby kept driving too fast and flying off the
track. Later, Scott writes in his journal and decides that his brother or sister
needs a name. He ended up coming up with Smelly as it was a combined
name of Sean and Emily and how his sibling is going to smell in the future
with the bulging diaper.

The next day in English class, Mr. Franka was telling Scott's class about
similes, metaphors, and other descriptive language. Scott makes up a bunch
of them during class like "Time crawled away along like a sleepwalking snail
dragging a history book." Since Julia was in the paper, Scott finally decided to
join the paper tomorrow afternoon. Little did he know that Julia was only a
guest in the paper and that he was accidentally wearing the Baltimore
Ravens T-shirt which made him look like he was interested in sports.Scott is
now a part of the school paper writing articles about each Friday football
game. The only problem is, the team never wins so no one wants to read the
article!

Now that one of his good friends Mitch has a girlfriend, he doesn't hang out
with him and his other two best friends anymore. Scott's life is slowly being
consumed by the "baby"
lifestyle. He wakes up early in the morning thanks to the loud noises of the
nursery being constructed. Scott's mom had a problem and had to be rushed
to the hospital. From what it sounded like it seemed like her water broke
when Scott said "Maybe they were installing a wading pool for toddlers."
While his parents were in the hospital Bobby decided right then and there
that he had to leave. So he packed all his things and left. When his parents
got home they didn't have a baby with them so maybe her water didn't
break.

It is election session at school and Julia, the pretty girl he likes, is running for
class president. Scott's friend Patrick thought of the idea of Scott running to
maybe try and get closer with Julia. Scott liked his idea. One of the
requirements is for Scott to write and give a speech. Only thing is, he has
never given a speech before.

Scott won! His speech wasn't as bad as he thought it was going to be. He got
a huge applause and it lead him to a spot on the student-council. But Julia
didn't win. So now there goes another chance for him, if he ever had one, to
be with her. Especially since she probably doesn't want comforting from
someone who did win. In his English class that day, Mr. Franka told them that
April was poetry month and that's why they're reading poems in October.
Scott asked the key question, "what are we learning in April?" And now he
gets to choose what the class will learn in April. Hopefully he picks the right
topic and not something that will make them whole class turn against him.

Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie: Pgs 112-168 Summary

Now that football season is FINALLY over, Scott no longer has to write
articles in the paper about the games. But Mandy assumes that he is a huge
sports fanaitc, he managed to get himself into doing reviews for both
basketball and wrestling! He has to go to twice the number of games now.

The school play was coming up and auditions were that week. Guess who
was auditioning, Julia. Scott, of course, couldn't resist trying out and being in
the play with her, so he showed up. As it turns out, the "play" is actually a
musical and he had to sing a song in front of all the kids there. As his voiced
cracked, he released sounds similar to croaking frogs and screaming goats.
He was embarrassed, and ran off. He didn't end up making the cut, but he
was asked to be on stage crew. Julia did not make it either. Big shocker. So
now, here is Scott involved in a ton of extracurricular activities. For Julia, he
joined the newspaper, student council, and musical crew. He just wanted a
chance to be with a girl who now isn't a part of any of them.

Kyle is on the JV wrestling team. He's pretty good from what it seems, and
Scott went to see his matches. Now that Kyle's on the team, he sits with his
new friends at lunch, without Scott. Scott wanted to be the "three
musketeers" this year with Mitch, Patrick, and Kyle. And now that Mitch has a
girlfriend and new friends, Patrick moved away, and Kyle has his team now,
it's not how Scott expected it to be. But maybe he will end up becoming
friends with that girl Lee. While he sees her as strange, he keeps coming
back to talk to her. They do seem to have a lot in common.

Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie: Pgs 168-252 Summary

Now that Scott has lost his three best friends, its time for him to find some
new friends. One person that he has come to be very well antiquated with is
Wesley Cobble. They're very different people and when Scott brought up
"The Princesses Bride" he realized right away that it was a bad idea to open
his mouth to begin with. Now Wesley drives Scott to and from school! None
of the upper class men even payed attention to the freshman student during
the meetings. Scott decided to quit but so did the other freshmen members.
Now that there was no more freshman representatives, the runner up
stepped in. The freshman student council runner up was Julia. Another thing
that only drew him further away from being close to Julia.

Scott had written a funny article about the football players and showed it to
the other members of the school paper. He didn't want to publish it but when
he noticed that it was published in that weeks paper, he knew that he was
about to be in some trouble. Vernon had read the article and found Scott in
the hall and was so close to beating him up until Wesley stepped in and got
rid of Vernon. Scott found out that the new baby is going to be a boy! All the
journal entries that Scott writes will be more relatable for his brother than if
he was going to be a girl. Wesley had asked Scott if he could read his book
"The Princesses Bride". Scott gladly lent it to him. Later, Scott finds out that
Wesley was lending his books, that Scott was lending to him, to his "cousin".
The question is, will Scott ever get his books back? for the month of April,
Scott chose for his class to learn all about comic books. Mr. Franka was very
pleased for his choice and seems as if the rest of the class doesn't totally
dread it.

Mouth had owned Scott five dollars from when Scott bought him lunch at
school one day. One night, mouth came to drop off the five dollars that Scott
had totally forgot about. He didn't seem like himself at all. He told Scott why
he was there, gave him the money, said bye and left. Scott was a little
suspicious but then thought nothing of it. The next day at school kids were
talking about how "That weird kid" tried to kill themselves. Scott ultimately
thought that it was Lee, but it was Mouth. Scott went to go visit Mouth
sometimes at the hospital. He heard kids making jokes in the hall and one
kid went up to Scott and said one and Scott lost it and pushed the kid up
against the locker. He stood up for Mouth like Wesley had stood up for him.
Scott also got the courage to tell Wesley to stop stealing lunch money from
kids and that it wasn't cool. Mouth is going to go to a new school but he
wrote a letter to Scott thanking him for being a good friend.

Scott began to wonder one day why Bobby never read a book that he had
suggested, or read anything at all. So he picked out a book and took it to
Bobby and wouldn't leave him alone until he agreed to read at least the first
page. Bobby couldn't fake the annoyance Scott was causing him so he
started and had lots and lots of trouble. Scott then found out the reason as to
why he doesn't read, it was because Bobby can't read.

Scott had his shows this weekend and then next. He got two free tickets for
whom ever he would like to come and see the show. He gave one to Lee and
one to Bobby. Both showed up and so did Wesley. Lee left a note on Scott's
locker saying they should go to the dance but Scott thought she was joking
when really she was trying to ask him to go with her. Scott felt like a
complete jerk and wants to try to make it up to her by asking her to the
dance in a big luxurious way.

Scott asked Kyle if he could sweet talk about him to Julia but Kyle got
annoyed and they ended up getting into a physical fight. Kelly, Julia's best
friend, had been whining to Scott throughout the day and when she finally
led Scott to the gym, instead of Julia waiting there for him was Vernon.
Vernon beat him up and both Kelly and Kyle were behind it but not knowing
that he would beat him up.
