Title: Math- Engage NY 2nd grade- Mod 6- lesson 12

Grade Level(s): 2nd grade

Subject: Math

Time Requirements: 1 hour (16 minute rotations x4)

Materials List:

Mod 6- lesson 12 problem set (x19)

Mod 6- lesson 12 homework (x19)
Addition/subtraction spint practice worksheet (x19)
5 Computers (successmaker)
5 Ipads (math games)
Pencils
Square tiles

Standards:

2.OA.C.4. Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular
arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a
sum of equal addends.

Instructional Objective: (student friendly language)

I can create arrays by placing objects in rows and columns.

Language Objective:

Students will be able to orally explain the difference between rows

and columns in small group settings.
Students will be able to orally describe their array using
mathematical language. (Vocab: rows, columns, array, repeated
addition)

Lesson Introduction/Anticipatory Set:

Teacher will stand next to where objectives are posted

Teacher will ask students, What skills have we been practicing in
math?
Teacher will review objective and point to where it is posted
Teacher will quickly explain each station (students are independent
and well-practiced in math rotations)

Main Lesson Tasks/Activities :

Students will rotate to each station for 16 minutes- use rotation chart
for reference

Math Lesson:
Teacher will pass out problem set to students
Teacher will read directions and model the first problem for
students
Students will continue to complete problem set with
teacher guidance
Teacher will ask formative assessment questions to gauge
student understanding
Teacher will ask prompting questions:
How many rows do you have?
How many columns? How many total objects are in your
array?
What is the repeated addition equation that matches the
array?
Can you build a different array using the same about of
objects? What would the repeated addition problem for that
array be?

**If students finish before the station is over, teacher will provide
students with extra practice building arrays with square tiles**

Practice Worksheet:
Students will sit at their own desks and complete the
practice worksheet
Worksheet is a review of addition and subtraction

**If students finish before the station is over, students may use the

math flashcards for extra practice. Individual or partner work is okay**

SuccessMaker:
Students will use computers to do SuccessMaker math.

math flashcards for extra practice. Individual or partner work is okay**

IPad:
Students will play math games from math folder on the
IPads

Assessment/Evaluation:
Teacher will ask formative assessment question to gauge
student understanding:
- How many rows do you have?
- How many columns? How many total objects are in your
array?
- What is the repeated addition equation that matches the
array?
- Can you build a different array using the same about of
objects? What would the repeated addition problem for that
array be?
Teacher will assess student understanding from the completed
problem set

Differentiation Strategies
Teacher will provide square tiles to students who are having difficulty
Teacher will model more problems for the student
Teacher will do a whole group lesson if many students are having
difficulty with the concepts
