The Bamboo and Oak

by Diego G. Valdez

The bamboo and the oak

one from the east and the other from the west
Each from the ground and earth woke
Yet which of the two is best

The bamboo is tall and thin

The oak heavy and thick
Both with roots that sprout from within
And to the ground like glue they stick

But when a storm strikes fierce

one will fall and the other stand
Into the strong wood it will pierce
Dealing a deadly hand

The oak stands strong

Unyielding to the maverick waves of winds continues
But it will not fight long
For after all thats left is a fallen mess

Stronger gales beat in the east

The bamboo does not fight against
Instead it yields and bends with the beast
A complete survival sensed

Sweet Dreams
by Thomas OLoughlin

E thereal rest, do not peep, just let me sleep. This not to be shared in the
streets, you best be discrete. For when we meet, youll hear the beat. This
is my treat. Do not bother me, my body is bake in, my mind is think in. Leave
me be, in glowing peace. The curtains rise and fall, the world breathes into my
room, breathing essence, magic, and life into me. My soul dances in the rivers
of ether, in lazy, ragdoll-like motions. It feels as if both the ocean and the sky
have encased me in a heavenly atmosphere, one that I wish would never end.
Let me swim in the night sky. Turn off those ridiculous devices, stop time and
sleep. That painful ripple in my mind tears open with my wake and I watch as
my sand & time sift through it and I with it. The simple breaths of slumber is
unbelievably comforting. So whatever you do, dont come near, do not wake me,
just let me sleep

Thinner sheets I should have got.

I open a window,
Inside begins a cool flow.

Yet it mustnt be open long,

As soon the room is chilly.

Too hot or too cold,

A balance I cannot hold.

The struggle of rest,

Should not be such a pest.

Numbers
by Diego G. Valdez

Numbers, numbers, everywhere

Hiding in plain sight.
How many legs in a chair?
What is the measure of ones height?

Our world is ruled by time,

Counting up and down,
Working hours for more dimes,
Numbers even worn for sound.

To understand the world,

Simply look at the numbers.
Everyday at one theyre hurled,
Once comprehended can lead to wonders.

The laws of physics are mathematical,

The universe works through properties of math.
A change in numbers can be drastical,
For they follow the logical path.

One plus one is two.

After three comes four.
That is what is true,
Although to many its a bore.

How many syllables in a word?

How many stanzas in this poem?
How many animals make a herd?
I suppose you must count them.

Wildflowers in Bloom
BY MAIA PEARL
Staff Writer

For the first time in 12 years wild flowers are carpeting deserts all over
Southern California. Many desert locals and scientists are calling it a Super
Bloom. Wild flowers start to bud every year at the start of spring, but what
is making this years bloom so special?
In order for a super bloom to occur, the weather must be ideal from
September through March. Seeds can stay dormant until the perfect condi-
tions cause them to sprout. These perfect conditions start out with a trigger
rain- one inch of rainfall any time from late September to early Decem-
ber, the earlier the better! The trigger rain should be followed by regular
rain showers, around an inch of rain a month. Seeds typically start sprouting
in late February and bloom in mid to late March, although they can start
blooming as early as late February, or as late as May. It is quite unusual for
the conditions to line up perfectly and to have a super bloom occur. Typically
it happens every 10 years and the flowers will only be in abundance for 2-3
weeks. Previous super blooms have occurred in El Nino years, 1998 & 2005.
