THE BRIEF
Where is Mrs. Zink... 2 years later?
Sources tell the Hi-Tide that the principal was
present in a case on Tuesday, March 14 (on an
LJHS WASC visit day) regarding the absence
from campus of LJHS math teacher Emma
Zink since October 2014.
The case involves Mrs. Zinks continued fight
to return to the LJHS campus and to clear her
name.
The Hi-Tide first reported on Mrs. Zinks case in
2014, and it has been the subject of two reports
by Rory Devine on NBC7, the most recent of
which was aired in August 2016 before the start
of the school year.
Central to Devines report is the fact that Zink
is being paid almost $90,000 in salary and
receiving about $27,500 in benefits without
teaching in an LJHS classroom.
The report also cites the influence of a petition
signed by La Jolla community members. An
earlier report from NBC7 displays an anon-
ymous advertisement placed in the February
2016 issue of the Hi-Tide, which received push-
back from some community members and
SDUSD officials.
Sources allege that the petition data is being
misrepresented. Wufoo, the platform used to
host the petition, said it would only be able
to release the full range of survey responses if
compelled to by law enforcement.
Neither Mrs. Zink nor the SDUSD were able to
comment for NBC7s report on the matter in
August.

The bamboo is tall and thin

The oak heavy and thick

But when a storm strikes fierce

Into the strong wood it will pierce

E thereal rest, do not peep, just let me sleep. This not to be shared in the
streets, you best be discrete. For when we meet, youll hear the beat. This
is my treat. Do not bother me, my body is bake in, my mind is think in. Leave
me be, in glowing peace. The curtains rise and fall, the world breathes into my
room, breathing essence, magic, and life into me. My soul dances in the rivers
of ether, in lazy, ragdoll-like motions. It feels as if both the ocean and the sky
have encased me in a heavenly atmosphere, one that I wish would never end.
Let me swim in the night sky. Turn off those ridiculous devices, stop time and
sleep. That painful ripple in my mind tears open with my wake and I watch as
my sand & time sift through it and I with it. The simple breaths of slumber is
unbelievably comforting. So whatever you do, dont come near, do not wake me,
just let me sleep

animals, or like food for you to feast on. the
honey in your voice has crystallized - the
added sugar has surfaced and its obviously
stale. we dont want your fake words.
the nose thats too big or round can smell
your cheap cologne (and your desperation).
the voice inside these lips that you judge
based on their thickness and width, and how
many teeth show when smiling wants to
scream and shout at you. we are not bodies!
we are human! we are alive! but we know
you will not hear us. your own thoughts and
self-confidence is deafening. you cant hear us
anyway.
your sweet words and kindness has a last-
ing impression. we love hearing nice things
people think of us; thats a human trait. we
also love to be valued as souls and minds - as
people.
if you speak to me and all you can think
about is what my body looks like then youre
not seeing me. youre merely viewing what
i look like through the clouded window of
shallow judgment.

Wildflowers in Bloom

For the first time in 12 years wild flowers are carpeting deserts all over
Southern California. Many desert locals and scientists are calling it a Super
Bloom. Wild flowers start to bud every year at the start of spring, but what
is making this years bloom so special?
In order for a super bloom to occur, the weather must be ideal from
September through March. Seeds can stay dormant until the perfect condi-
tions cause them to sprout. These perfect conditions start out with a trigger
rain- one inch of rainfall any time from late September to early Decem-
ber, the earlier the better! The trigger rain should be followed by regular
rain showers, around an inch of rain a month. Seeds typically start sprouting
in late February and bloom in mid to late March, although they can start
blooming as early as late February, or as late as May. It is quite unusual for
the conditions to line up perfectly and to have a super bloom occur. Typically
it happens every 10 years and the flowers will only be in abundance for 2-3
weeks. Previous super blooms have occurred in El Nino years, 1998 & 2005.
