Focus Question: Why did people want to expand out West?
Lesson: Intro to Chpt 9 (PowerPoint/Workbook) Time: 42 minutes

7.2.3 - appreciate the challenges that individuals and communities face when confronted with
rapid change
Instructional Objectives: (Not outcomes, but lesson objectives. Not a description of
lesson procedure, but an indication of what students will know or be able to do by the
end of the lesson).
Students will:
- Demonstrate their understanding of the content by completing the appropriate
section of the workbook
- Explain the concept of natural resources
Key Questions:
What are some related questions for this lesson?
Related Question = What did you notice? What did you not understand? (After showing
Far and Away clip)?
What is a natural resource?
What are some natural resources that are found in Alberta?
How did FNMI traditionally use some of these resources?
Who is in the video clip?
Materials:
Workbook
Textbooks
PowerPoints
Preparation:
Pull up PowerPoint ahead of time
Adaptations:
Give more time to students if they need it
Include visual, auditory, and repetition in the lesson
Lesson Procedure:
(Use numbered or bulleted steps. Indicate lesson introduction, development and
conclusion to clarify the flow of the lesson. Write it with enough detail that a substitute
teacher could teach the lesson.)
- Introduction: introduce the agenda for the day
- Welcome Mrs. Prawdzik
- Introduce the Far and Away clip (movie featuring Irish immigrants moving to US)
- Discussion after clip: What did you notice (i.e. promotional poster, illiterate
immigrants, they had to claim their land)
- What is a natural resource? (show slide)
- Read p. 194-195
- Look at map: What natural resources can be found in Alberta?
- Show Notley clip Keystone Pipeline example. A Natural Resource that is harmful to
the environment but creates jobs.
- Use the rest of the time for workbook
- Conclusion: Why did people want to expand out West?

Assessment:
How will you know if students met your lesson objectives? What assessment tool or
strategy are you using? What are you looking for in this formative assessment?

Formative assessment = observe who is participating in class discussion. Watch for


engagement in the conversation. Students should work independently on their workbook
