However, one describes or defines addiction, no matter which end of the
experience one faces either suffering from a Substance Use Disorder
or loving those that are SUD diagnosed, it is expensive. Over $15 billion
was spent in 2009 at the state and federal government level; five billion
was paid by insurers on substance-abuse treatment per year for roughly
four million people. Think that soundsexpensive?
Consider this: most people I know who have a Substance Use Disorder
have never been exposed to treatment. No government agency has ever Charles Waverly Bland, Sr.
paid for them to get treatment or provided them with any substantive
care. Maybe theyve attended a methadone clinic. Perhaps one time
when they over-dosed a social worker may or may not have discussed
treatment options for five minutes while they lay on a gurney in the hall
of an over-crowded emergency room trying to wake up. The problem is
bigger than even these statistics reveal! Twenty years ago, most people
associated addiction with the streets. Conjured up visions of a happy fa-
mily of three plus their dog out for a morning stroll stumble upon an un-
der resourced homeless addict over-dosed in Monroe Park. Dirty. Inco-

Student Rates Literacy Tutor 10! Harry Taylor

Accomplishes Major Goal with Help from Passionate
Literacy Tutor at St. Philips Episcopal Church
Reading The Beatitudes to Our Congregation
Mr. Harry Taylor was born and reared in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; how-
ever, he has been a Northside resident since 1970. Retired from Philip Morris
and the Wonder Bread Bakery, this determined Child of God was on a serious
mission to improve his reading skills, but more importantly, see the day he would
stand before his church congregation and read The Beatitudesand it happened
just a few months ago! While having a wonderful conversation with Mr. Taylor
on March 29, 2017, after learning about his story, he couldnt stop talking about
the individual who helped him achieve his goal, literacy tutor, Deborah Little-
Bowser, who is also a registered nurse and dedicated writer for Northside Vibes
(Ask Nurse Deborah).
Says Mr. Taylor, My tutor has helped me so much when it comes to improving
my reading (comprehension, enunciation, pronunciation, syllables, etc.). She
met me where I was with my reading abilities and helped me advance to the next
level. She is a real understanding, kind person--and she doesnt rush you. She
explains my homework in detail. If I ever have questions, even if I ask the same
question repeatedly, my tutor is always so patient. The Beatitudes: I worked
with Deborah for months in order to accomplish my goal. I just wanted to see
the day I would be able, and feel confident enough, to read the scripture in front
of our congregation at St. Philips Episcopal Church located at 2900 Hanes Ave-
nue, Richmond, Virginia. Wellit really happened! It happened on January
29th! At first, I had real low self-esteem. I didnt think I could do it. Deborah
hung in there with me and told me to keep practicing (especially at home). She
kept saying, You can do it! You can do it! I prayed I would make it through
the reading and I did! [smiling]The congregation even applauded! It truly
was an emotional, spiritual moment. All eyes were on me; and I felt so good
about myself. If I was asked to rate my tutor, Deborah Little-Bowser, and The
READ Center, they would definitely receive the highest rating10!
WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT: For those of you who are struggling
with reading comprehension, please come to one of our tutoring classes (or The
READ Center). Its never too late to learn (better yourself). I am 69 years young
(thats rightyoung!); and I would love to see other people like me come and
learn rather than hold back (tomorrow isnt promised, so improve your reading
skills today). This class has helped me a lot! I hope my testimony will encourage
other people to make their dream come true. Last, but not least: This class is
FREE! 1 day a week (every Wednesday). Please invest in yourself! The tutors
here are very patient. You dont have to feel bad or embarrassed. The tutors are
willing to spend the time to help you. I would really enjoy having other class-
mates join us. Come onecome all! We can do this together!

bute was made to Rose Adams, the past organizer of the
staff dinners, as well as Dr. Randy Adams love of his
