Course Overview & Objective

Prerequisite Topics:
Dynamics; Differential equations; Laplace transforms; basic Electrical circuits.
Objective 1:
To teach students the fundamental concepts of control systems , block diagrams , signal flow
graph ,transfer functions and mathematical modeling of the system.
Objective 2:
To teach students the characteristics of closed-loop control systems, including steady-state and
transient response, parametric sensitivity, disturbances, error, and stability.
Objective 3:
To teach students basic performance criteria for first and second order systems.
Objective 4:
To teach students basic control system design methods, including root locus diagrams and
frequency response methods.
Objective 5:
Introduce students to the basic concepts of proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) control
and pole placement using root locus.

Pedagogy
The methodology is a combination of lectures, use of audio-visual resources, interactive class
discussions, tutorials and regular written assignments. Assignments which clearly demonstrate
incorporation of course material, and originality and creativity in topic selection, content and
organization will receive higher grades.

Academic Honesty
Plagiarism is a form of cheating, and occurs when you use another persons ideas or words
without acknowledging the source of information, and providing proper documentation. A
student who commits the act of plagiarism, or any form of academic dishonesty will receive a
failing grade for the course. The topics of written assignments and presentations must be
original, sourcing from the student, and the supporting evidence must be acknowledged and not
taken in toto from either books or websites.

Course Web Site

Students are expected to refer the course website (www.manipalitdubai.com) to download the
course outline, presentation, notes, assignments, templates and any other updates in the course.

Attendance
Students are expected to attend class regularly and must be in the class before the
commencement of the session. Those who enter the class ten minutes after commencement of
class will not be allowed to attend. Students have to maintain more than 80% attendance in order
to be eligible to take the semester end examination.
