Background
The gas fuel system is a hydraulically operated assembly that controls the Fuel Gas Flow to the Turbine
combustion nozzles. This assembly consists of two independent valves (a stop/ratio valve and a gas control
valve) combined into one body:
Stop Ratio Valve (SRV) -- controls the gas inter-valve pressure to maintain sonic flow at the GCV and
acts as a quick primary shutoff valve to stop the flow of fuel gas to the turbine on shutdown or trip
conditions.
Gas Control Valve (GCV) -- controls the gas fuel flow by precise metering in accordance with the load
requirements of the gas turbine and additionally, serves as a redundant shutoff valve.
The Turbine Control Panel (TCP) controls the Lift of both valves by means of servo-valves and a Linear
Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) for feedback signals.
A few units have experienced sticking of the SRV and GCV valves during gas turbine ramp-down.
The root cause analysis highlighted that these occurrences can be attributed to nonconformities of the
geometrical tolerances of the SRV and GCV bushings and stems.
Since these valves are composed of two components that rub against each other, their estimated life is
strictly related to the number of valve stroke cycles called for by the unit.
In the case of out of design conditions, the estimated life of the valve can be significantly reduced. The
friction force is higher and the behavior irregular due to the formation of scratches, metallic debris and
damage of the sliding surfaces. This can cause the valves to stick.

This type of nonconformity has been found on DN 3 Combined Gas Fuel Speed Ratio Valves (SRV) and Gas
Control Valves (GCV) manufactured or overhauled between January, 2009 and March, 2012 (see affected
valve serial numbers in Attachment #1).
Recommendations
GE Oil & Gas recommends verifying if the serial number of the valves installed in the unit or retained as
spare parts are included in the list of affected serial numbers in Attachment #1.
The location of the serial number is shown in Figures 1 and 2.

In case the serial number of the valve is included in the list, GE Oil & Gas recommends proceeding as follows:
Collect data as per Attachment #2. The results should be submitted to GE Oil & Gas Customer
Service Center as per paragraph Contact, to evaluate when the valve should be overhauled.
If the control system does not allow the registration of these data, please contact GE Oil & Gas for
additional instructions.
In case the serial number of the valve included in the list is a spare valve, it should be sent to GE Oil &
Gas for overhauling.
As a general rule, GE Oil & Gas reminds Customers that, as described in the maintenance guidelines
NOM02057 issued with NIC 04.34 Rev.01 and contained in the O&M manual, replacement of the full
SRV+GCV group shall be planned during gas turbine major inspection.
As described in the O&M manual, overhaul activities must only be performed by SRV/GCV qualified GE Oil &
Gas workshop/personnel.
Therefore, a complete valve group assembly should be located or procured as a spare in case overhauling is
needed.
Failure to comply with the recommendations contained in this document could result in sticking and/or
seizing problems of SRV and GCV valves with the potential risk of equipment damage and personal injury.

Scope of work
For a valve overhaul, the repair time in SRV/GCV qualified GE Oil & Gas workshop is 4 weeks (shipment
excluded), so a complete valve group assembly should be located or procured. Replacement of the valve
requires a mechanical engineer and an instrumentation specialist for two (2) 10-hour shifts.
Note: In order to keep the GE Oil & Gas global installed fleet database updated, it is kindly requested that the
COMPLIANCE RECORD and USER SATISFACTION SURVEY be completed and sent to the addresses specified in the forms.
