Week 1 Communicative Language Communicative Language Learning Video Notes: This video gives information about Communicative 3
Learning Language teaching in which the teacher is seen as the facilitator and the student is a communicator.

v=iGDxC they tne use proverbs-students are matching their proverbs with the English Language and then the
g90Its&feature=related students check their answers then work together, students then act out their scenes and the other
students guess what proverbs the groups are acting out. Third is Computer assisted language learning:
students are watching a film and students are to answer questions while the film is playing. Students
work individually but the teacher is walking around. Fourth is that students use ads to learn.

Learners build skills and learn progressively,
When teachers use Bloom's Taxonomy teachers should begin from the middle
of the circle when planning lesson.
Tridiac Reciprocidy Model: Personal Factors, behavioral factors, and
environmental factors.
Teachers should include positive feedback, incentives in order for teachers to
help their students. Their is intrinsic and extrinsic motivated learners. Extrinsic learners
are usually the ones that become the lifelong learners.

Week 2 Task-Based Learning Students work well when they are collaborating and working together. 4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= In task based learning-students are told to solve a task whether it is individual
QirhNeIwQ0w&feature=related and or with a group.
Give your students the steps in order what they first need to do to begin the
task
Give students steps for them to follow and detailed instruction that they are
supposed to do for the activity.
Make sure to go around and see where is it that students need help and take
notes on what was that the students were confused and go over it at the end of class.

Communicative Language Communicative Process is Important

Teaching Communication is important, have students practice communication. Such as
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= share, different tasks.
20zBOWrP2yc&feature=relmfu Try to make communication possible in the classroom
Communication can be the focus of learning, it has taken different forms, it has
led into content based teaching, task based teaching, text based teaching.

Task based teaching begins with the task so it is basically like the reverse way
Task-Based Language Teaching of teaching in which many teachers are used to.
Students can use tasks based learning to learn better because they are
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=
applying a certain task to a concept that they are learning.
BJYbkDK3T-k&feature=relmfu
Uses a curriculum from tasks that take place and they use the language to be
able and be performed because students learn .It uses their language resources
Task based is built on the curriculum that they are learning
(Sandra) Students performance are not predictable so teachers have to be able to think
of many different ways in which their students will react to the task based learning.
It builds language awareness to form student awareness and stay on task.

Week 3 Students feel that sometimes when they have a question in school there are 3
not the sufficient people to understand their native language so they are unable to ask
ESL Struggles & Strategies questions and get clarifications.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= Students struggle to communicate with their teachers especially if they do not

Hildas video project aimed to help literacy level (ESL) students improve their
Student centered ESL video project communication and writing competencies through the production of short video skits,

v=frMGCQacDD0 http://avispector.wordpress.com for more tips and tutorials.
Students made videos then they had to summarize what they did then the
students would include captions and practice their writing.
(Sandra) Students were practicing their English by video making, students made the
videos with their groups and then they finished writing everything. They would meet with
the teacher and get feedback on their video how they spoke and in their writing.

Week 4 It focuses on the outcomes of teaching. It starts by looking at the skills that 3
students use in the English language.
Jack C. Richards on Competency
We look at the building blocks on how to begin.
Based Instruction Such as how to explain something in the English Language
http://www.youtube.com/watch? It looks at the skills that students will need to be able to connect to their work
v=lRmYlNpYGkw and into the real world.
It looks at the skills that students will need for the real world.
It does not tell us how to teach but it tell us about the important ideas that
students should learn to apply them into the real world

New words are introduced with pictures.

They are shown in a kinesthetic way in order for students to be able to apply
and learn and most importantly remember.
Teaching English to Children Multi- Sensory Vocabulary Drilling: Vocabulary exercise put the picture on the
http://www.youtube.com/watch? board when the teacher calls out the word.
v=KF7wpZslNRE Teacher was also making the noises from the the animals and the students
that would have that image at their desk would come up to the board and put the image
(Sandra) up.
Reading Lips Exercise: it is used that the teacher is moving their lips and the
students are trying to guess what the teacher is mouthing, it is used as a vocabulary
technique to help students learn vocabulary words.

Week 5 3 Dyslexia and ELL Videos TPR or Total physical response is when students learn using physical
movements and repetition. The video shows a TPR sequence in which students follow
Total Physical Response movements, gestures and pictures. The students are kindergartners learning short

Week 9 Professor Jack C. Richards- teaching principles

We are generally taught specific methods and use those until we gain more experience and
Jack C. Richards on Teaching
Principles confidence, then we learn how to adapt to different circumstances. We develop core principles that
become the basis for which we make decisions. We should ask ourselves what principles are we 4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=URpjAcs9fy0 working with, like share the learning (group work) for students with different abilities, or make learning
fun for students who are less motivated. We as teachers are doing cognitive thinking activity while we
Diane Larsen-Freeman on Techniques teach and it is personal, based on our beliefs, thoughts, ideas, principles, etc. We should continue to
develop our own principles in teaching. This professor is good at encouraging teachers to take
&
Principles in Language Teaching (3rd ownership of their teaching and not to simply follow what they are taught in teacher education
programs..
ed.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?
Diane Larsen-Freeman- techniques and principles in language teaching
v=cNSmrbkYKx8
Three of the many reasons for studying methods for teaching language:
1. Can help clarify our own language about language learning, language teaching
and language
2. Can give us a wide repertoire of new activities with which to experiment 3
3. Challenge our existing thinking
Challenging our existing thinking helps us to see the language learner as a whole person.
Language teaching methods have gone through various stages, like TPR, Communicative, etc.
This evolution has taught us to see the learner as a whole and to change our strategies to aid the
learner in better ways. We should continue to be aware and adjust as needed to ensure the best
learning experience for our students. Good ideas to work with.

Week 10 Suggestopedia- Lonny Gold

Academic English in Content There are four principles:
Positive Approach, Short term and long term memory simultaneously, Emotional Meaning,
Classes Ch. 8
Assimilation before analysis
Language of Math Ch. 9
Uses specially written text (usually written by the teacher) to get rid of negative suggestions and
Suggestopedia
focus on positive situations. There are 14 characters the students will play.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?
Suggestopedia cycle: Prelude, first concert reading, decoding, activation, relaxation concert. 3
v=yX4JFEUgqlg
Covers different learning strategies: auditory, visual, kinesthetic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?
Aesthetics of the room is important since only 7% of communication is based on what is said, 38%
v=-7Rw0mZa7pE
is body language, facial expressions, and other nonverbal cues, while 55% of communication is
from the context (so suggestopedia creates an environment).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rL-
Steps:
iuIO-YQ
1. New identity- new start (prelude)
2. The text is given as a present to the students (first concert reading)
Community Language Learning 3. Concert reading- discovery of the text (first concert reading)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= 4. Decoding-coming into contact with the language (decoding)
TebzFxkXRPE&feature=related 5. Developing new aspects of personality. Jokes are important (decoding)
6. Improving pronunciation (activation)
7. Becoming creative with the language (activation)
8. Learning about intercultural concepts-intercultural dimension (activation)
9. Creating and melding the group (activation)
10. Building one activity onto the other (activation)
11. Encouraging expression (activation)
12. Maximum talking time (activation)
13. Gradually introducing corrections (activation)
14. Being at the same level as the students (activation)
15. Remaining inside the fantasy (activation)
16. Overcoming inhibitions (activation)
17. Emotional meaning on logical structure (activation)
18. Double plane-subcontious support to concious goal (activation)
19. Put students at ease
Three barriers to learning: logical, emotional, moral
These videos have some good points, but are a bit drug out and a little extreme in some areas.
Week 11 Total Physical Response
Observing Standards-in-Action: Students learn by listening and imitating the teacher. The order must be kept at first, but after can be
mixed up. The students are doing motions with the sentences. Then the teacher asks the students to
ESL Classroom Lesson
http://www.youtube.com/watch? demonstrate the movements as he states the sentences. The students are able to produce the 4
motions for each sentence he states. This relates to the kinder classes that use motions to go with the
v=aQusQWPjdMo
letters and sounds the students are learning. The motion is often easier for the students to produce
than the sentence or idea verbally. Good concept that I have seen work in classrooms
Lesson Planning
http://www.youtube.com/
Lesson Planning/ Take Away Value of a Lesson
watch?v=IHV-
This was a good video for a new perspective on lesson plans. Professor Jack Richards states that
73BwzOg&feature=relmfu
plans are a resource, and though we are required to fill them out completely in teacher programs,
many experienced teachers choose to use more mental lesson plans than on paper. It is important to
Take Away Value of a Lesson
think abou the material and what you want the students to take away. He also says that lessons
http://www.youtube.com/watch?
should be used more like a guide, that it is better to drop parts that are not working, or follow the way 4
v=
the lesson is going that is beneficial to the students rather than staying with the exact lesson plan
XeV9ognfvq4&feature=relmfu
created. Things may happen to change the course of the lesson, and that is alright. Teachers need to
focus more on what the takeaways are from the lesson rather than getting through all of the material.
Total Physical Response (TPR) -
This professor encourages teachers to think outside the box, not to simply follow the rules as they were
Teacher Training film no. 8
taught in a teacher education program.

12 ESL: Speaking Real English

How Much Are The Peppers? (2 of 4) The creative use of a story that is added to after each student retells the story is an interesting and fun
way to get the students motivated and engaged in the learning process. The stories get longer and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=
ctUpTO5DijQ crazier, so the students are talking more and more and thinking about what they are saying. They are 4
speaking in their own words rather than a rote answer they might do in other classes. Students
Teaching English to Adults language will improve with use of the language. This is a good example of authentic language use and
how students can have fun while learning.
