RU Teacher Education Lesson Plan Format

Candidate Name: Megan VanGorder Date: 2/30/2017 Grade

Level: K

Lesson Title/Topic: Wants Vs. Needs - Economics

Standards:
Economics -
K.7 The student will
a) recognize that people make choices because they cannot have
everything they want
Math -
K.15 The student will sort and classify objects according to attributes.

English -
K.3 The student will build oral communication skills.
e) Participate in group and partner discussions about various texts and
topics.

Specific Observable Objective(s):

I can tell a want from a need.
I can sort pictures of wants vs. needs.
I can talk to others about the differences of wants and needs.

Essential Vocabulary:
wants - things that make people happy but are not necessary to live
needs - things people need in order to live and function

Assessment:
Students will be assessed through conversations and questioning during/after the
activity. They will also be assessed through a final product - their finished sort of
pictures in wants and needs columns.

Student Considerations:
Students will be put in groups of 2-4 with at least one student working above grade
level and one student working below grade level in each group. This pairing will
enable the students working below grade level to learn from their peers and get
assistance with the activity when needed. It will also allow for the gifted students to
learn the content more in-depth by teaching it to the students who are struggling.

Instructional Resources, Materials, and Technology:

- large pieces of paper with line down the middle
- one side labeled wants the other labeled needs
- laminated pictures of different wants and needs
- cookies, clothes, water, house, video games, jewelry, etc.

PROCEDURES:

The Beginning (a.k.a. Anticipatory Set): (5 minutes)

Who can raise a quiet hand and tell me something they need to live? Class
discussion. Who can raise their hand and tell me something that they want
but do not need? Class discussion. There is a big difference between things
in our lives, some things we need and other things we just want. We call these
things wants and needs. Needs are things that we cant live properly without,
and wants are just fun things that we enjoy having - but do not help us live.
Let children share more wants and needs. Today I am going to split you into
groups, each of you will have a paper split in half - one side will say wants and
the other will say needs. Working with your group, you are going to take your
stack of pictures and sort them where they belong by telling if they are a want
or a need.

The Middle: (7 minutes)

Teacher will split class into small groups and assign them to a spot in the
classroom to work. Each group will get their piece of paper and stack of
pictures. Teacher will walk around the classroom as students work together in
their groups - assisting and answering questions as needed.

The End (a.k.a. Closing): (Specify time)

Okay class, I want everyone to come back to join me on the carpet - leave
your materials
where they are. Everyone will gather back onto the carpet. The teacher will
have her own set
of pictures that the students sorted. One by one she will hold them up and
have students tell where they placed them on their sort and explain why it is a
want or a need.
Teacher Reflection on Practice (following the lesson):
1. What evidence did you collect to show your students attained todays
objective(s)? Please explain how you know which students did and did not
master your objectives. Use formative assessment data to support your claims
regarding the portion of students who did and did not master the learning
objective(s).
- NOT IMPLEMENTED
2. Based on the result of your assessment, what will you do tomorrow?
Can you go ahead as planned or will you need to reteach concepts from
todays lesson? (Explain how you will reteach and/or connect and feed
forward.)
- NOT IMPLEMENTED
3. If you have to teach this lesson again, what might you do the same and
what might you do differently?
- NOT IMPLEMENTED
