Lesson Plan

Name: Consequences and Risks of Unprotected Sex Worksheet

Domain: (Cognitive, Comprehension)

Target Population: Low-Income Women ages 18-25

Unit III Objective:

Upon completion the learner will be able to analyze and recognize consequences and

risks associated with unprotected sex; such as unintended pregnancy, STI, HPV, and Cervical

Cancer.

Enabling Objectives:

1. Following instruction the learner will be able to explain one reason why women can get pregnant

if their partner withdraws/pulls out before he ejaculates by writing a short paragraph. (Cognitive,

Comprehension)
2. Following instruction the learner will be able to explain one reason why an individual is at risk

of contracting an STI from not using a barrier method by doing a worksheet. (Cognitive,

comprehension)
3. Following instruction the learner will be able to paraphrase two reasons why proper use of

condoms reduce the risk of HPV and cervical cancer by completing a worksheet. (Cognitive,

Comprehension)

Introduction:
Good morning class, today we are going to talk about some consequences and risks of

unprotected sex. More than half of all people will have an STD/STI at some point in their

lifetime.( AIDS.gov, 2016) Also, Recent estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and

Infection show that there are 19.7 million new STIs every year in the U.S.(SexualHealth.org,

2016) We will be focusing on how unprotected sex can lead to unintended pregnancies and how

unprotected sex can lead to STIs, HPV and Cervical Cancer.

Description of implementation procedure:

1. After the introduction of the class, do a small discussion about what they already know about

unprotected sex and how it can lead to unintended pregnancies, STIs, HPV and Cervical Cancer.

Will be using a whiteboard or Chalkboard to write down what the students already know. (10

min)
2. Show a powerpoint presentation. The first part of the powerpoint will be about what the main

risks of unprotected sex and what the withdraw method is. The first part of the powerpoint will

also explain their is a high risk of unintended pregnancies when using this the withdraw method.

(8min)
3. The second part of the powerpoint presentation will explain the risk of unprotected sex. STIs,

HPV and cervical cancer definitions will also be discussed. (20 min)
4. After the powerpoint, the class will Split the class in groups of four. (5 min)
5. Pass out worksheet and have the students complete the worksheet with the help of their group

members. (20min)
6. Dismiss class

List of materials and equipment needed:

Key For in class worksheet: Answers

1: Explain one reason why women can get pregnant if their partner withdraws/pulls out

before he ejaculates by writing a short paragraph.

* Possible answer for #1: Withdraw Method Definition: A man who uses withdrawal will pull

his penis out of the vagina before ejaculation. The pull out method may not work before men

ejaclate because requires great self-control, experience, and trust, is not for men who ejaculate

prematurely, is not for men who don't know when to pull out, is not recommended for teens and

sexually inexperienced men because it takes lots of experience before a man can be sure to know

when he's going to ejaculate. This method is not 100 percent safe therefore should be avoided.

(Idaho Department of Health & Welfare, n.d.).

2. Explain one reason why an individual is at risk of contracting an STI from not using a

barrier method.

*Possible answer 1: Dental dams prevent STDs during oral sex by keeping vaginal and anal

fluids that contain bacteria and viruses away from the mouth. Dental dams prevent many STDs,

such as herpes, genital warts and HIV, that can be transmitted through oral sex. Like condoms,

dental dams must be used correctly and consistently in order to be effective (Idaho Department

of Health & Welfare, n.d.).

*Possible answer 2: Another barrier method that prevents STIs is condoms. Consistent and

correct use of male latex condoms can reduce (though not eliminate) the risk of STD

transmission. To achieve the maximum protective effect, condoms must be used both

consistently and correctly (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015).

3. Paraphrase two reasons why proper use of condoms reduces the risk of HPV and

Cervical Cancer.

Reason 1: Proper use of condoms reduces the risk of HPV because it prevents skin to skin

contact reducing the chance of HPV transmission when having sexual intercorse. (CDC.gov,

2015)

Reason 2: Proper use of condoms reduces the risk of HPV because it prevents skin to skin

contact reducing the chance of HPV transmission when having sexual intercorse. (CDC.gov,

2015)
