Vermont Trout Season Now Open
Vermonts traditional trout fishing season
opened on Saturday, April 8, and despite
extended cold weather across the state in
recent weeks, officials from Vermont Fish &
Wildlife say anglers can be successful early
in the season by following a few basic tips.
Just like any other time of the year,
anglers fishing early in the spring should
adjust their tactics based on the conditions,
said Brett Ladago, fisheries biologist with
Vermont Fish & Wildlife. Given the cold
weather and runoff from recent storms and
snow melt, water levels will be high, flows
will be faster than normal, and water tem-
peratures will be cold.
As a result, anglers may want to target
small to medium, low-elevation rivers and
streams where flows slow and waters warm
more quickly, added Ladago. Finding water
that isnt too muddy can be key, and slowing
your lure or bait retrieval will help tempt
sluggish trout into biting.
Ladago also said that fishing slowly with
worms or spinners through deep holes behind
current breaks created by big boulders,
downed trees or log-jams can be productive
for early season trout.
Vermont is known for its excellent and
diverse fishing opportunities for wild trout.

Family Camping Weekend Celebrates 20th Anniversary
For the past 20 years, the annual Becoming
an Outdoors Family Weekend has provided
an avenue for families to experience nature
and learn basic outdoor skills while making
new friends.
This years event, organized by University
of Vermont (UVM) Extension and the
Vermont Agency of Natural Resources
Departments of Fish and Wildlife and Forests,
Parks and Recreation, is planned for June 2-4
at Stillwater State Park in Groton. While open
to both new and veteran campers, the week-
end is intended as an introduction to camping
and the outdoors.
In addition to traditional camp activities,
the weekend features workshops, a bottle
rocket-making station and launch, Friday
night ice cream social and Saturday night
potluck supper and dance party with a 90s
theme. Throughout the weekend families will
have full access to all park facilities including
the boat launch and free canoe and kayak
rentals. Fishing licenses may be purchased at
the park although kids under 15 fish for free.
Registration for the campsite (for up to
eight people) and all activities is $189 per
family. The deadline to register is May 20.

focusing on waters known to hold wild fish,
said Ladago. Despite unpredictable and
often extreme weather during early spring,
each year anglers report catching impressive
trout during opening weekend.
Anglers who like to fish and release their
catch dont need to wait for opening day.

ing opportunities for trout and bass in

trout fishing.
The digest is a helpful tool for planning a
fishing trip as it includes maps showing rivers
and lakes, as well as fishing access areas and

workshops. Offerings include beginning and
advanced mountain biking, geocaching, intro-
duction to archery, basic firearm safety, out-
door cooking, orienteering and wildlife track-
ing, among others. Workshops designed spe-
cifically for the youngest campers include
exploring trees through touch, nature for very
young explorers and wilderness survival for
young families.
New this year are sessions on black bears,
honey bees, pond life, wood slice art, barn-
wood quilts, kitemaking, kayaking, back-
packing and white-tailed deer and moose. All
sessions are led by expert instructors and
include hands-on activities.
Past attendees who refer a new family will
be entered in a drawing for a free weekend
stay at any Vermont state park, courtesy of the
Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and
Recreation.

Vermonts Spring Turkey Hunting Starts Soon
Its almost time for spring turkey hunting
in Vermont. Youth spring turkey hunting
weekend is April 29-30 this year, and the
regular spring turkey season is May 1-31.
What makes Vermonts spring gobbler sea-
son special? Vermonts turkey hunting is
statewide during the spring season. Vermonts
turkey population is one of the highest in
New England. You can buy a turkey hunting
license without having to go through a lottery.
The turkey license comes with two spring
tags for two bearded birds and one tag for a
turkey of either sex in the fall season. Plus,
you get to hunt the entire weekend because
hunting is allowed on Sundays.
In 2016, hunters took 5,537 turkeys in both
the youth weekend and regular spring season,
and 1,272 turkeys in the fall season.
Landowner permission is required to hunt
on private land during youth turkey hunting
weekend. To be eligible, a youth must be age
15 or under. The youth must have success-
fully completed a hunter education course
and possess a hunting license, a turkey hunt-
ing license and a free youth turkey hunting
tag.
The youth also must be accompanied by an
unarmed adult who holds a hunting license
and is over 18 years of age. New this year
shooting hours are one half hour before
sunrise to 5 p.m. just for the youth weekend.
The youth may take one bearded turkey dur-
ing youth weekend and two bearded turkeys
in the regular May hunting season. Last year,
young hunters took 662 turkeys during
Vermonts two-day youth hunt with a success
rate of 31 percent.
The regular spring turkey hunting season is
May 1-31. Shooting hours are one half hour
before sunrise to noon. Two bearded turkeys
may be taken, and all of Vermont is open to
turkey hunting during the youth weekend and
F&W Board Seeks Public Input on
Proposed Fishing Regulation Changes
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Board is now
in the process of seeking public input on a
number of proposed fishing regulation chang-
es that could go into effect starting in 2018.
Among the proposed changes are:
Simplifying regulations on the Missisquoi
River for muskellunge and year-round fish-
ing.
Expanding the Little River two-trout bag
limit to the section between the Route 2
bridge and Waterbury Reservoir Dam.
Making the existing Dog River test water
designations for catch and release trout fish-
ing into permanent regulations.
Changing the catch and release trout regu-
lation on the Batten Kill to include an artifi-
cial lures and flies gear restriction, similar to
the Dog River.
Simplifying the Clyde River regulations
and expanding its catch and release season
for salmon to include September and
October.
Establishing rules against snagging fish.
Creating a new definition of immediate
control for ice fishing.
Moving existing language related to com-
mercial angling into a new section.
Expanding the legal method of take for
fish to include spear gun and cross bow on a
limited number of species.

A shotgun or archery equipment may be
used in the youth turkey or regular spring
turkey hunting seasons. Shot size must be no
larger than #2 and no smaller than #8.
The success rate during the May season
was 21 percent, and of those successful hunt-
ers, 33 percent harvested a second bird under
the two-bird limit.
Vermont was the first New England state to
re-establish wild turkeys when it released 31
wild birds from New York in 1969 and 1970.
Today, the Green Mountain State has an esti-
mated 45,000-60,000 turkeys.
Vermonts wild turkey restoration pro-
gram is a tremendous wildlife management
success story funded entirely by hunters
through the sale of hunting licenses and a
federal tax on hunting equipment, said
Vermont Fish & Wildlife Commissioner
Louis Porter. Now, hunters are reaping the
benefits by seeing excellent turkey hunting in
Vermont. And, all Vermonters are enjoying
watching the big birds as they roam hillsides
they had been absent from for almost a cen-
tury.
Large numbers of turkeys are being seen
this spring after two relatively mild winters,
added Porter, so hunters can expect very
good chances of success.

Implementing new bags limits on bowfin,
redhorse sucker and longnose gar.
In addition, an angling group is proposing
from September 1 to October 31 on the Clyde
River from Lake Memphremagog upstream
to the West Charleston dam, that angling be
restricted to fly fishing with floating line,
unweighted leader and one unweighted artifi-
cial fly with a single hook.
The Board will be hosting four public hear-
ings to gather comments on the proposals,
and will accept written comments through
May 17, 2017.
The hearings start at 6:30 p.m., and the
schedule is as follows: Tuesday, May 2 in
Newport at the Emory Hebord State Office
Building; Wednesday, May 3 in Rutland at
Rutland High School; Thursday, May 4 in
Montpelier at the Pavilion Building at 109
Main Street; and Tuesday, May 9 in St.
Albans at the St. Albans Town Education
Center.

January, normally colder went warmer at 24.4 degrees which was 7.7 degrees
too warm. February was also way warm averaging 26.0 degrees or +6.1 above
average. Then came March the only one below normal at 23.4 degrees. This
was negative 5.6 degrees. So March 2017 turns out to be a little warmer than
December...mainly because of the last few days were mild. As typical Marchs
go, it was brutal for Sugar makers and seemed much more like January or
February.
In the snow department March was the biggest snow producer with 33.4
Second was February 29.9 December 25.7 was third with January a poor
snow producer with only 11.6 falling. March can often be big in snowfall
moist jet stream and storm trafc, but not always.
According to Winter data from the E.F. Knap Air port there were a total of
10 days receiving ice or sleet which typically go hand in hand.
Winter weather in Vermont typically begins the end of November and last
into the rst part of April. The bulk of Winter is usually December through
March. National Weather Service Climatology typically uses December
through February as winter. However, Coldest 90 days of meteorological
winter Dec. 12th thru March 9th Midpoint of winter is January 23rd where in
the olden days we would have a January thaw.
Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Mid April measurement for Carbon Dioxide CO2 was 409.39 ppm as
measured at the Mauna Loa Observatory. Highest-ever daily average CO2 at
Mauna Loa Observatory 409.56 ppm back on March 27th, 2017.
What to Watch Polar Sea Ice melt off, Blue Ocean
event within the next 4 Septembers...
Arctic sea ice appears to have reached its annual maximum extent a little
over a month ago on March 7. The arctic winter - cold and dark creates the sea
ice that eventually accumulates (just like snow does on our mountain peaks
and eventually the accumulation peak lags astronomical winter which occurred
back on December 21st) just as it takes many winter storms to build up snow
depth, the ice buildup lags as well. What is noteworthy, this is the lowest
maximum in the 38-year satellite record.
On March 7, 2017, Arctic sea ice likely reached its maximum extent for the
year, at 5.57 million square miles, the lowest in the 38-year satellite record.
This years maximum extent is 471,000 square miles below the 1981 to 2010
average maximum of 6.04 million square miles and 37,000 square miles below
the previous lowest maximum that occurred on February 25, 2015.
This years maximum is 39,000 square miles below the 2016 maximum,
which is now third lowest.
For the polar arctic region, it was a very warm autumn and winter. Air
temperatures at the 925 hPa level (about 2,500 feet above sea level) over the
ve months spanning October 2016 through February 2017 were more than
4.5 degrees F above average over the entire Arctic Ocean, and greater than 9
degrees F above average over large parts of the northern Chukchi and Barents
Seas. These overall warm conditions were punctuated by a series of extreme
heat waves over the Arctic Ocean.
Data from the European Space Agencys CryoSat-2 satellite indicate that this
winters ice cover may be only slightly thinner than that observed at this time of
year for the past four years. However, an ice-ocean model at the University of
Washington (PIOMAS) that incorporates observed weather conditions suggests
the volume of ice in the Arctic is unusually low.
What about Antarctica
In the Southern Hemisphere, sea ice likely reached its minimum extent for
the year on March 3, at (815,000 square miles. This years minimum extent was
the lowest in the satellite record, continuing a period of satellite-era record low
daily extents that began in early November. However, the Antarctic system has
been highly variable. As recently as 2015, Antarctic sea ice set record high daily
extents, and in September 2014 reached a record high winter maximum.
The Antarctic minimum extent is 286,000 square miles below the 1981 to
2010 average minimum of 1.10 million square miles 71,000 square miles below
the previous lowest minimum that occurred on February 27, 1997.
Antarctic air temperatures during the autumn and winter were above aver-
age, but less so than in the Arctic. Air temperatures at the 925 hPa level (about
2,500 feet above sea level) near the sea ice edge have been about 2 to 4.5
degrees Fahrenheit above the 1981 to 2010 average.
Why should We Care?
Focusing on the Arctic North pole - Ice loss attribution has been linked by
several studies and more corroborating information which comes in nearly
every day to horrendous weather. Simplied, it creates those weather extremes
that affects you and yours living now and especially in the future oods, heat
waves, droughts, infrastructure loss, property loss, deaths and calamity.
Where Politics and Weather Collide...
Apparently this weather mayhem is not enough for our so called elected (or
not see Russian scandal) leadership at the helm in Washington D.C. This so
called leadership was aided and abetted by self aggrandizing plutocrats mil-
lionaire/billionaires in the legislative body who are representing their donors
and not the average joe on the block who lives in the 100 to 1000 year ood
plain.
Short term prots will not erase long term outcomes for all. Flood insurance
program will be the rst to go. They, the Millionaire/billionaire class will be
the rst to tell you Sorry there just is not any money! So, sorry little one.
City and towns - FEMA grants? Keep watching as the weather drivers go more
extreme.
Meanwhile, the Trump Administration has seen to it to cut and omit publica-
tion of even 2 meter temperatures of the high arctic shown by NASA What
are they afraid of? Do they not know that arctic study is international? Do they
not know that there are tens of thousands doing scientic study on ice loss and
anthropogenic warming?. Apparently this information is a bigly threat to the
system, never mind physics temperature and water vapor.
Some say Democracy peaked in 2006 and was in a free fall since November
8th. In the so called increasingly plutocratic free west there was a trend toward
an oligarch society which controls information. Yup, its bad very bad. Keep
watching the arctic my friends, and what craziness happens here in Vermont,
the Northeast.
Ice Bergs Suddenly Overwhelm Shipping Lanes Green-
land Calving Goes Nuts.
More than 400 icebergs have drifted into the North Atlantic shipping
lanes in early April. Unusually large, the swarm had been forcing vessels to
slow to a crawl or take detours of hundreds of miles.
Experts are attributing it to uncommonly strong counter-clockwise winds
that are drawing the icebergs south, and perhaps also global warming, which is
accelerating the process by which chunks of the Greenland ice sheet break off
and oat away. As of Monday, there were about 450 icebergs near the Grand
Banks of Newfoundland, up from 37 a week earlier, according to the US Coast
Guards international ice patrol in New London, Connecticut. Those kinds of
numbers are usually not seen until late May or early June. The average for this
time of year is about 80.
In the waters close to where the Titanic went down in 1912, the icebergs are
forcing ships to take precautions. Instead of cutting straight across the ocean,
trans-Atlantic vessels are taking detours that can add around 650km (400
miles) to the trip. Thats a day and a half of added travel time for many large
cargo ships. Close to the Newfoundland coast, cargo ships owned by Oceanex
are throttling way back to three or four knots as they make their way to their
home port in St Johns, which can add up to a day to the trip, said executive
chairman Captain Sid Hynes. One ship was pulled out of service for repairs
after hitting a chunk of ice, he said. It makes everything more expensive,
Hynes said. Youre burning more fuel, its taking a longer time, and its hard
on the equipment. He called it a very unusual year.
Most icebergs entering the North Atlantic have calved off the Greenland
ice sheet. Michael Mann, director of the earth system science center at Penn-
sylvania State University, said it was possible climate change was leading to
more icebergs in the shipping lanes, but wind patterns were also important.
In 2014, there were 1,546 icebergs in the shipping lanes the sixth most
severe season on record since 1900, according to the patrol. There were 1,165
icebergs in 2015 and 687 in 2016.
The international ice patrol was formed after the sinking of the Titanic to
monitor iceberg danger in the North Atlantic and warn ships. It conducts recon-
naissance ights that are used to produce charts.
In 104 years, no ship that has heeded the warnings has struck an iceberg,
according to the ice patrol.
Vermont April Weather Trends
April Weather starts cold but moderates Warmer however modeling
prediction is about as low as it gets. And a lot of coniction for the Forecast.
The Roller coast ride continues as it looks well into May. This will feature
some rather cold days and we are probably not done with snow either so
you are taking chances when you take your snow tires off as least in this highly
variable pattern that seems to have become default.
Above I mentioned the seriousness of what goes on in the arctic. Losing
sea ice does not stop at the arctic. Well the jet stream and i.e. storm track is all
over the place due to the unusual early loss of snow in surrounding continents
of the arctic ocean. This effects the weather here in Vermont. What we do not
want to see is the large amplitudes in troughs and ridges which are driven by
a slowing jet stream due to the arctic warming and the Albedo of the arctic
ever increasing warming the arctic ocean. Thus Spring and Fall seasons have
become less predictable.
Anything goes this April. I suspect a drier and wetter trend depending on
locations with the wetter trends likely across northern Vermont and drier trends
in the southern areas. Temperatures will be4 colder at rst but after the 15th,
when a cold wave affects most of our region we will likely moderate out some
of the early cold and end the month on a warm note but start May on a cold
note. Its all about oscillations in the jet stream/storm track.

Vermont Moose Hunting Applications Vermont Mountaineers and Three Penny
Are Available Taproom Announce New Beer Garden
Vermont moose hunting permit applica-
tions are now available on the Vermont Fish
& Wildlife Departments website (www.vtfis-
handwildlife.com).
Printed applications will be available from
Vermont license agents in early May.
A total of 63 regular moose season permits
and 17 archery moose season permits will be
issued for Vermonts 2017 October moose
hunt. The archery season is October 1-7. The
regular season will be October 21-26.
The number of permits is reduced from last
years 165 total number of permits, and per-
mits will only be issued for bulls this year.
Hunters are expected to harvest close to 33
moose with the reduced number of permits.
We recommended a reduction in permit
numbers and permits only for bulls this year
based on biological data, and our population
estimates indicating moose densities remain
below management goals in many areas,
said wildlife biologist Cedric Alexander,
Vermonts moose project leader. The intent
of the proposal to allow controlled population
growth.
Alexander estimates Vermont has 1,750
moose statewide with the greatest concentra-
tion in the Northeast Kingdom.
We continue to take a very conservative
approach given recent regional and national
trends of moose populations and health,
added Alexander. Moose biologists from
the southern tier of moose range across North
America are increasingly concerned about the
effects of warming temperatures on moose
health. Moose can easily become stressed by
warmer weather causing them to feed less
and early spring snow melt that results in
higher winter tick loads the following year.
Lottery applications are $10 for residents
and $25 for nonresidents. The deadline to
apply is July 3. Winners of the permit lottery
will purchase resident hunting permits for
$100 and nonresident hunting permits for
$350. Hunters also will have the option to
bid on five moose hunting permits in an auc-
tion to be announced later. Beginning in
2016, hunters who held a permit within the
past five years are not eligible to apply for a
permit or to buy a bonus point. A person who
had a permit before 2016 must wait three
years.
Following a unanimous vote of approval
by the Montpelier City Council, the Board of
Directors of the Vermont Mountaineers are
pleased to announce a new beer garden at
Montpelier Recreation Field for the 2017
season. The beer garden will be a shared ven-
ture with the Three Penny Taproom. The
Three Penny Taproom will operate the beer
garden which will bring their nationally rec-
ognized knowledge of Vermont craft beers
and expertise in serving beer at community
events to the ballpark.
The beer garden will be located down the
left-field line just beyond the foul pole. The
new fenced-in area will feature picnic tables
for fans to rest and cans of beer and cider
from local brewers. Proof of legal drinking
age and a ticket to the game will be required
to enter the beer garden and beer sales will
conclude at the end of the seventh inning.
Drinks will not be allowed outside of the beer
garden.

Taproom, said of the new venture, We are
honored to be part of the Mountaineers plans
for adding a beer garden to the games at
Montpelier Recreation Field. We love what
the games bring to the culture of Montpelier

while watching the game.

Chickering Fen in Calais Recognized as One of Three Vermont Wetlands with Class I Designation
Three unique Vermont wetlands are now
being classified as Class I wetlands, a desig-
nation that places extra protections on wet-
lands with exceptional ecological features.
The three wetlands receiving Class I designa-
tions are the Sandbar wetlands (Milton and
Colchester), Dennis Pond wetlands
(Brunswick), and Chickering Fen (Calais).
These are the first wetlands to be granted
Class I status in over a decade. Only three
other wetlands have been assigned Class I
status: Dorset Marsh in Dorset, Northshore
Wetland in Burlington, and Tinmouth Channel
Wetland in Tinmouth.
These wetlands were conserved years ago
in recognition of the value they provide in
protecting fish and wildlife habitat, buffering
our communities against the devastating
impacts of floods, and improving water qual-
ity for drinking or swimming, said Emily
Boedecker, Commissioner of the Vermont
Department of Environmental Conservation.
The Class I designation memorializes their
value by ensuring that the simple pleasure of
spending quiet time observing nature in these
treasured places is protected for all
Vermonters, today and into the future.
Though most wetlands exhibit substantial
levels of plant and wildlife diversity, Class I
wetlands are granted additional protections
from encroaching development because of
their exceptional or irreplaceable values.
The Department encourages the public to
enjoy these areas, but to do so at appropriate
times of year and through established trails or
observation areas. Spring and early summer
are the time of year when many wetland-
dependent wildlife such as wood ducks, her-
ons, osprey, bitterns, marsh wrens and many
more are nesting, laying eggs, and rearing
young. It is important to avoid disturbing
wildlife in wetlands during this time of year.
If you are visiting, consider the following
information to respectfully access and observe
wildlife at these wetlands:
The Sandbar wetland complex is mostly
designated as a wildlife refuge by the Vermont
Fish and Wildlife Department. In the refuge
area, public access is prohibited. However,
good viewing opportunities are available at
several locations along Route 2 in Milton and
from Sand Bar State Park. Additionally, peo-
ple can use canoes or kayaks to paddle along
the perimeter of the refuge and down the
Lamoille River to observe wildlife from the
water. Boats can be rented from Sand Bar
State Park. The 1,100-acre wetland complex
includes stands of wild rice and one of the
largest and best-condition examples of the
uncommon Lakeside Floodplain Forest natu-
ral community type in the state.
The Chickering Fen wetland, wholly owned
by The Nature Conservancy, is accessed via
an easy one-mile hiking trail ending in a
boardwalk into the wetland. Good times to
visit the fen include May and June when
unusual fen wildflowers can be found, and
late October when the tamarack surrounding
the fen turns bright yellow. The hike itself
also features views of other wetlands, conifer
forest, and a rich forest with spring wildflow-
ers. Please remain on the boardwalk when
viewing the wetland to avoid harming the
sensitive fen vegetation. The trail crosses
private property, so please do not enter areas
marked as No Trespassing.
The Dennis Pond wetland can be explored
either from the land or via canoe or kayak.

This wetland supports ecosystems usually
found in colder areas to the north of Vermont,
with spruce-fir forest, large expanses of bog,
and frequent moose sightings. Access is avail-
able via Route 102 and Dennis Pond Road in
Brunswick. The bog is best viewed by boat to
prevent trampling of sensitive plants. The site
can also be accessed in the winter from a
VAST trail on the west end of the wetland
basin. Be aware that some of the Dennis Pond
basin includes areas of private land. Please
respect No Trespassing signs.
Class I designations occur as part of a
robust public process to make updates and
changes to the Vermont Wetland Rules, which
govern protections on wetlands. Amendments
can be initiated by the Agency or through a
petition to the Agency. The three wetlands
nominated for Class I designations were
included in the updated set of rules approved
in January 2017. The updates became effec-
tive April 1.
Other revisions to the wetlands rule includ-
ed increasing the public noticing period for
permit applications by 5-15 days, and outlin-
ing a clearer permit amendment process.
