INTRODUCTION

I n the need to receive all the information that is generated during the process in the most reliable and most integrated

way, products are generated whose purpose is the acquisition of this data and in turn the transmission to other control devices throughout the industrial process, it is necessary to have equipment that allows the flow of information with which the monitoring and supervision of the process variables is carried out, for it is made use of the RTU, ”remote terminal units”, which guarantee these functionalities providing a greater support in the data flow, and in this way the decentralization of the information allowing the flowing information, not to concentrate on a single device or area, so that in case of failure of some acquisition devices. This information is not completely lost.

II. REMOTE TERMINAL UNITS (RTUS)

The RTUs are connected to field electrical equipment, signals as sensors, which send signals to the RTUs, the basic function of the RTU is to cover the sensor signals in the digital signals and then send the coded digital data to the control center, at the same time, they also send control commands to the field team A remote terminal unit has the ability to monitor a number of I / O related to a process, analyze and maintain data in real time, execute user-programmed control algorithms, communicate with the master station, and in some Cases, with others remote; Performing a periodic exploration of the process variables and through a communication module allows the exchange of information on a master station (MTU) located in a central control room, using various means of communication: telephone line, UHF / VHF, microwave, satellite, fiber optic or other means, through auxiliary ports with other remote and / or portable terminals. The communication protocol, the structure of the message and the techniques of error correction are specific to each manufacturer.

An RTU has input / output modules which are connected to the local instrumentation and control system. The input modules have the function of acquiring the information supplied by the field instrumentation and the local control system and conditioning it to the appropriate operating levels,

the output modules have as function to give the process the control signals, digital or analog, Coming from the SCADA system. They follow the inverse process than in the input module, since binary format must be transformed to the appropriate field levels for discrete signals and a value proportional to the control action on analog control signals.

A. INPUT MODULE: The input module has the function of acquiring the information of the field supplied by the transducers and conditioning it to its operating levels, it allows the handling of discrete and analogical information, the treatment of each one being different. Discrete information is usually taken through an interconnect panel which relays the field signals and is represented as two voltage levels, this being converted into digital information by the input module in order to be processed. The analog input module processes this information by an analog / digital converter (A / D) transforming it into binary information so that it can be processed by the information processor module.

B. CONTROL MODULE: This module has the function of registering, receiving and transmitting control commands received from the master unit or supervisory system. You must ensure the reliability of the operation by using security mechanism and error detection. In general, the control module receives the messages from the master unit and checks the code to determine if there has been a transmission error. After successful code verification and decoding of the address, a response message is sent to the station or master unit.

C. INFORMATION PROCESSING MODULE (CPU): The CPU is the controller unit for all functions of the remote terminal unit, since it directs all data transfers between registers and memory locations, and controls the interruptions of the communication interface which sends the RTU data to the master unit. The data processing functions of the RTU are known in a sequence determined by the RTU software. The data and instructions are stored in RAM and / or ROM modules and the program instructions are sequenced by a real time clock. This module places

a timestamp accurate to 1 millisecond to recorded events.

D.

COMMUNICATIONS MODULE: This module is in charge of encoding the information received from the field to be able to be transmitted by the communication channels, likewise the information received from the master station is processed by this module and decoded, in the industry there is no standard as far as remote and protocols whereby each manufacturer has a different method of grouping the information, with its own error- checking schemes.

III.

RTU COMMUNICATION PROTOCOLS

What are communication protocols? In computing and telecommunication, a communications protocol is a system of rules that allow two or more entities of a communication system to communicate with each other to transmit information by means of any kind of variation of a physical magnitude. These are the rules or the standard that defines the syntax, semantics and synchronization of communication, as well as possible methods of error recovery. Protocols can be implemented by hardware, software, or a combination of both.

When we talk about RTU communication protocols, we can find that this device works with the TCP / IP model, and makes it necessary to use each of its levels for communication with other devices on the network, so for each of the model levels, we find different protocols that allow the link, thanks to the standardization of today in the communications, it is possible to make use of several protocols of different manufacturers and the TCP / IP model protocols.

Due to different RTU manufacturers, these in turn also make use of different communication protocols, But often some of the protocols are common in devices. We started with the application level protocols of the TCP / IP model.

APPLICATION LAYER PROTOCOLS

Post Office Protocol (POP): It is used by email clients to retrieve email from a remote server

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP): Is used to transfer files that make up the Web pages of the World Wide Web.

Modbus Protocol: Modbus is also used for the connection of a monitoring computer with a remote unit (RTU) in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)

Telnet Protocol: Is the name of a network protocol that allows us the access another machine to

handle it remotely as if we were sitting in front of it.

TRANSPORT LAYER PROTOCOLS

User Datagrams Protocols (UDP): it allows the sending of datagrams over the network without a connection having been established previously, since the datagram itself incorporates enough addressing information in its header.

NETWORK LAYER PROTOCOLS

Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP): It is used to send error messages, indicating for example that a certain service is not available or that a router or host cannot be located.

LINK LAYER PROTOCOLS

Address Resolution Protocol (ARP): It allows to find the hardware address (Ethernet MAC) that corresponds to a determined IP address.

Point to Point Protocol (PPP): Commonly used to establish a direct connection between two nodes of a computer network.

PROTOCOLS STANDARDS

To achieve standardization, it is necessary to use international standards that guarantee the application and operation of these protocols in the devices. Here we find the standards:

IEC 60870-5-101 Standard: For the monitoring of energy systems, control systems and their associated communications.

IEC 60870-5-104 Standard: Is an extension of the IEC101, with modifications in the transport level services, network level services, link level services and physical level services to satisfy the total access in the network.

Ethernet Standard: Ethernet defines the wiring and physical level signaling characteristics and the data frame formats of the link level of the OSI model.

DNP 3.0 (Distributed Network Protocol): It’s an industrial protocol for communications between intelligent equipment (IED) and control stations, components of SCADA systems.

IV. RTU INCORPORATED TECHNOLOGIES

When we make use of the remote terminal units, these have different types of technologies, which allow them to make use

of their functionalities in data acquisition, transfer and control, as well as processing, memory to accumulate information, and communication capabilities with other devices, all thanks to their internal technologies. These capabilities are enhanced year after year thanks to the increasing innovation in the electronics and automation fields required in industries around the world. For all this, it is necessary that these devices are at the forefront of all those new technologies that allow the best performance and greater efficiency in their tasks, which are becoming more demanding, from its processing level to its robustness, and the ability to communicate with other field devices. To this end, it will describe the latest technologies for each of these previously mentioned fields that guarantee the highest performance in the execution of the most demanding tasks in the industry.

MEMORY AND PROCCESING: The RTUs have very powerful microprocessors that allow the handling of large amounts of information along with high memory, RAM, EEPROM and FLASH capabilities.

COMMUNICATIONS

RTUs

have

technologies

that

make

it

possible

to

communicate wirelessly and also physically by cable.

WIRELESS COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES:

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications): A GSM client can connect through your phone to your computer and send and receive messages via e-mail, fax, surf the Internet, securely access a company's network Local / intranet), as well as using other digital data transmission functions, including short message service (SMS) or text messaging.

GPRS (General Packet Radio Service): It is an extension of the "Global System for Mobile Communications" for data transmission through

packet switching.

VHF (Very High Frequency): It is the band of the electromagnetic spectrum that occupies the frequency range of 30 MHz to 300 MHz.

UHF (Ultra High Frequency): It is a band of the electromagnetic spectrum that occupies the frequency range of 300 MHz to 3 GHz.

CABLE COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES:

TELEPHONE LINES: Is an electrical circuit of a telephone system. Typically, it refers to a physical cable or other means of signal transmission that connects the telephone apparatus of the user to the telecommunications network, and usually also comprises a unique telephone number associated with that user in order to bill the service provided.

RS-232: In telecommunications, RS-232 is a standard for serial communication transmission of data. It formally defines the signals connecting between a DTE (data terminal equipment) such as a computer terminal, and a DCE (data circuit- terminating equipment or data communication equipment), such as a modem.

RS-422: Also known as TIA/EIA-422, is a technical standard originated by the Electronic Industries Alliance that specifies electrical characteristics of a digital signaling circuit. Differential signaling can transmit data at rates as high as 10 Mbit/s, or may be sent on cables as long as 1500 meters.

RS-485: Also known as TIA-485(-A), EIA-485, is a standard defining the electrical characteristics of drivers and receivers for use in serial communications systems. Electrical signaling is balanced and multipoint systems are supported.

Optical Fiber Links: Optical fibers are used most often as a means to transmit light between the two ends of the fiber and find wide usage in fiber-optic communications, where they permit transmission

at

over longer distances and higher bandwidths (data rates) than wire cables.

Ethernet Ports (RJ45): RJ-45 is a physical interface commonly used to connect structured wired computer networks (categories 4, 5, 5e, 6 and 6a). It has eight pins or electrical connections, which are usually used as ends of twisted pair (UTP) cables.

RTC: The switched telephone network (RTC) is defined as the set of elements made up of all the transmission and switching means necessary to connect two terminal equipment at will by means of a physical circuit, specific for communication. It is, therefore, a switched telecommunication network.

USB Ports: Is an industry standard bus that defines the cables, connectors and protocols used on a bus to connect, communicate and provide power between computers, peripherals and electronic devices.

V. PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES

Currently each manufacturer designs its own programming software, the most widespread worldwide are:

Contact Language or Ladder

Boolean Language (List of instructions)

Function diagram

The International Electro Technical Commission (IEC) developed the IEC 1131 standard in an effort to standardize Programmable Controllers. One of the objectives of the Committee was to create a common set of instructions that could be used in all PLCs. The IEC 1131 standard for programmable controllers consists of five parts, one of which refers to programming languages and is referred to as IEC

1131-3.

The IEC 1131-3 standard defines two graphical languages and two text-based languages for programming PLCs. Graphic languages use symbols to program control instructions, while text-based languages use strings to program instructions.

In addition, the IEC 1131-3 standard includes a form of object-oriented programming called the Sequential Function Chart (SFC). SFC is often categorized as an IEC 1131-3 language, but this is actually an organizational structure that coordinates the four standard programming languages (LD, FBD, IL and ST). The structure of the SFC had its roots in the first French standard of Grafcet (IEC 848).

A. LADDER: also known as a contact language or ladder, is a very popular graphic programming language within Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), because it is based on classical control schemes. In this way, with the knowledge that every electrical technician has, it is very easy to adapt to the programming in this type of language. Its main advantage is that the basic symbols are normalized to NEMA standards and are used by all manufacturers.

to NEMA standards and are used by all manufacturers. B. FBD: It is a graphical language

B. FBD: It is a graphical language that allows the user to program elements (block of PLC functions) in such a way that they appear interconnected like an electric circuit. They usually use logical symbols to represent the function block. Logic outputs do not require the incorporation of an output coil because the output is represented by a variable assigned to the output of the block. In addition to the vendor's standard and specific logic functions, the IEC 1131-3 FBD language allows the user to build their own function blocks according to the requirements of the control program.

blocks according to the requirements of the control program. C. LIST OF INSTRUCTIONS: The Boolean language

C. LIST OF INSTRUCTIONS: The Boolean language uses the Boolean Algebra syntax to enter and explain the control logic. It consists of elaborating a list of instructions or mnemonics, making use of Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT, etc.) and other mnemonic instructions, to implement the control circuit. The language "Instruction List" (IL) of the Standard IEC 1131-3, is a form of Boolean language.

D. STRUCTURED TEXT (ST): Structured Text (ST) is a high level language that allows for structured programming, which means that many complex tasks can be divided into smaller units. ST closely resembles BASIC or PASCAL computer languages, which uses subroutines to carry out different parts of the control functions and pass parameters and values between the different sections of the program.

E. SEQUENTIAL FUNCTION CHART (SFC): It is a graphical "language" that provides a diagrammatic representation of control sequences in a program. Basically, SFC is similar to a flowchart, in which subprograms or subroutines (programmed in LD, FBD, IL and / or ST) that form the control program can be organized. SFC is particularly useful for sequential control operations, where a program flows from one point to another once a condition has been satisfied (true or false).

The SFC programming framework contains three main elements that organize the control program:
