ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

- Process of recognizing values and clarifying concepts in order to develop skills and attitudes
necessary to understand and appreciate the inter relatedness among man, his culture and his
biophysical surroundings.
- it also entails practice in decision making and self formulation of a code of behaviour about issues
concerning environmental quality.

BIODIVERSITY

- the variety of life that can be found on earth, (plants, animals, fungi and micro organisms) as well
as the communities they form and habitats in which they live.

OVERPOPULATION

- Population increasing at an alarming rate.


- Results in people over inhabiting in residential areas.

DERSERTIFICATION

- type of land degradation in which a relatively dry land region becomes increasing arid, typically
losing its bodies of water as well as vegetation and wildlife.
- biological potential of soil and ability to support populations diminishes.
- natural causes: drought and desiccation of vegetation.
- human causes: over cropping, overgrazing, deforestation, poor irrigation practices.

DEFORESTATION

- permanent destruction of natural forests and woodlands.


- occur when forests are converted to non-forest uses such as:
- agriculture
- grazing
- selective timer cutting
- fuel wood collection

POLLUTION

- poisoning the environment with anything that reduces its ability to support life.
- these substances are detrimental to people and living things.

ECOLOGY

- the interaction between living organisms and their environment, as well as the interrelationship
between living things.
HEALTH HAZARDS

- TB
- malaria
- cholera
- AIDS

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

- economic development that is conducted without depletion of natural resources.

ECOSYSTEM

- a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.

URBANISATION

- Urbanization is the physical growth of urban areas as a result of global change.


- It is also defined by the United Nations as movement of people from the rural to the urban areas.
