I'mabitconfusedbecauseofmultiplepostsregardinglostdocumentsbecauseofGoogleDriveTrash.Hopingtogettothebottomofhow
thedriveactuallyworks.ThisisthesituationI'veexperienced(nothinghorriblehashappenedyet):1.Gotwarningthatmygooglespaceis
99%full.Thisincludesitemsfromgmail,drive,andphotos.2.Ihaveagoogledrivesynchfolderonmylocalmachine,whichIkeepallof
myworkingfilesin.IlovethatgoogledriveisautomaticallycreatingabackupofmyworkinrealtimeandthatIcanaccessthemfrom
differentdevices.Verynice.3.WhenIcompleteajob,Ithenbackituptoanexternaldrivebydraggingoverthejob'sfolder(fromthe
googlesynchedfolder)totheexternaldrive'sicon.Onamac,whendraggingovertotheexternaldrive,thejobfoldershowsthelittlegreen
plussign,whichindicatesthatthefolderisbeingcopiedover.SoI'mnotactuallymovingthefolder,it'screatingaduplicateontothe
externaldrive,whiletheoriginalremainsinthegoogledrivesynchfolder.Thisisallgood.Oncethebackupiscomplete,I'llmovethe
originaljobfolder(whichresidesinthegoogledrivesynchfolder)tothetrashanddeletethetrashonmylocalmachine.(Igettheprompt
thatanybodywithsharedaccesswillloseaccess)Stillthat'sfine.4.Ijustrecentlyrealizedthatwhiletheversiononmydesktopis
completelygone,thereisstillaversiontakingupspacein"trash"ofmyonlinegoogledrive.Ithitmethatthisiswhymydriveissofull.
AnytimeItakeafolderoutofmygoogledrivesynchfolder,itcreatesaduplicateingoogledrive'strash.ISTHISCORRECT?Ifso,Ilike
thisfeaturebecauseitgivesmeafailsafe.5.Ididatesttoensuretheaboveisinfacthowthedriveworks.TheprocessworkedasI
expecteditto.MyfearisthatImaybemissingacriticalstep,becauseofsomenightmarescenariosI'vereadaboutgoogledrivelosing
filessomehow.Repeatingthescenarioabove,othershavetriedtoaccessfilesmovedfromthelocalgoogledrivesynchfolder,then
deletedtheonlinegoogletrashduplicate...thenlostfilesontheirlocalmachines.Idon'twantthistohappen.HopingthatI'mdoing
everythingcorrectly.Icannotaffordtoloseanyofmyworkfiles,butIalsoneedtofreeupsomespaceonmyonlinegoogledrive.Any
confirmationthatI'munderstatingthesystemcorrectlywillbeagreathelp.

Iamgoingtotrytoansweryourquestionasconciselyaspossible.Simplyput,GoogleDriveTrash
(online)willhaveacopyofyourfilesyoudeletedasa'backup'.Itdoesgiveyouafailsafe.Tofreeup
spaceyouwillwanttoemptyyourGoogleDriveTrash.

Afteryouemptyyourtrash(online)filescanberecoveredforupto25days.(Evenfurtherfailsafe).

Youareabsolutelycorrectwithhowthesystemworks.Mostpostsregarding'lost'filesareeasilyfixedby
usingtheaboverecoverylink.

Onasidenote,IamateacherthathasusedDrive(personallyandprofessionally)sincelaunch.Ihave
neverlostafileandlovehowitworks.

DOCX,JPGetc.bothinthecloudonGDandyourlocalharddrive.

ThisisnotthecasewithGoogleformatteddoc's,sheet's,slides,whatisonyourlocalharddriveareonly
shortcutstotheonlycopyofthefileswiththedatastoredonlyonGD,thusifyoucopytheseshortcuts
toyourexternaldriveandthinkyouhaveabackupcopyofthefileswithdata,youdonot!

Ifyouwant,andyoushouldhave"backup"copiesofyourGoogleformattedfiles,youcanuseGoogle
Takeouttoreally"backup"yourfiles.DownloadyourdataAccountsHelpnotethatGoogleTakeout
