BSN Student Portfolio

Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing

Purpose & Goals

Students are required to develop and maintain an academic, professional portfolio throughout the
BSN program. This portfolio is a collection of personal work that provides evidence of self-
reflection and growth over time in knowledge, skills, and attitudes reflective of the baccalaureate
program outcomes.

As a connection between course content, program outcomes, and clinical experiences, the
portfolio is an opportunity to:
foster the students ownership of and responsibility for personal and professional growth
and lifelong learning;
provide a framework for self-reflection on strengths and areas for development;
provide evidence of critical thinking, knowledge acquisition, skill proficiency, and
attitude development reflective of a baccalaureate-level nurse generalist;
develop documents relevant to the student for career planning and employment
acquisition.

My experiences at Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing has been wonderful. The

program has pushed me to do my best in classes and I have learned so much about how to

function like a nurse. The clinical rotations I have experienced have been very organized and I

have gained an incredible amount of knowledge about how to care for patients and families. I

feel that those clinical experiences have prepared me for my clinical experiences outside of the

classroom. I am constantly learning something new about a disease process or medication and I

feel that I have been able to incorporate that learned information into my studies in the

classroom. The classes have been challenging, but not terrible. The amount of time needed to put

into the classwork is very difficult to acquire and it has been very difficult to stay on top of the

amount of work that needs to be put into school while trying to have a job to pay for any

expenses and spend time with family and friends. Time management has definitely been a

problem for me so far. I have kept a weekly planner throughout the nursing program and it has

helped quite a bit, but staying on top of assignments when the due dates have changed has been

quite the challenge. I guess I need to make sure I write down the new due date as soon as I hear

the due date has changed. I feel that the group work and presentations have been very

informative and the service learning activities have helped remind me why I have decided to get

into the medical field. Throughout my clinical experiences, I have been told by multiple patients

that I am going to be a great nurse and they were very happy to have me as their student for the

day. It has been very humbling to hear that from the patients and it further reminds me of the

reasons why I have decided to be a nurse. I am able to bring my thoughtfulness and patience to

the forefront and be the best advocate possible for the patients.
