Notes on teaching by Jere Brophy

As this chapter talks on Brophy teaching which allows to know some of the principles of

effective teaching. It is the cornerstone on the learning consequences but keeping in mind the

need of supportive classroom climate and students behavior on school. first it talks on the

supportive classroom climate which is as students learn and achieve higher if the classroom is

supportive and caring. As it says that an effective teacher is responsible how the classroom

climate is if he or she displays a positive attitude then the classroom environment will be

automatically good. Teachers plays an important role in extending the learning surrounding from

school to the home. Students are made so comfortable that they do not hesitate to answer the

questions. The second one is opportunity to learn as students learn more if the students are much

more involved in the learning activities instead of the more year in school. as it says that an

effective teachers does not need to spend time on behavioral problem of the students.

Additionally effective teachers does not waste time on non- academic things instead they focus

on the academic activities realizing the importance of time. as in the part of circular alignment

and establishing orientations as the curricular alignment it aims in helping students for preparing
them to fulfill their roles and it also relate with the students potential inside and outside their

lives. Whereas establishing learning orientation involves preparing students for learning and for

that teachers need to communicating and giving the prior knowledge which helps them to be

more prone to goal oriented. Most importantly instruction should be provided beforehand. And

moving on to the next coherent context, thoughtful discourse, and practice and application

activities as coherent content it says that Content is most likely to be organized coherently when

it is selected in a principled way guided by ideas about what students should learn from studying

the topic. And in the thoughtful discourse students are engaged asking questions which helps

them to think critically. And in the classroom an effective teachers plans a number of questions

and help students create their understanding.

On the other hand the other remaining principles are same as the previous ones and these

principles focus much on the basic and universal aspects of formal schooling.

Reflection

As I really liked this booklet because I think this is very important as a future teacher. And we

can get a lot of information. Here in this Jere Brophy teaching it provides 12 principles of

effective teaching which I think is very important to know. It is the cornerstone on the learning

consequences but keeping in mind the need of supportive classroom climate and students

behavior on school. As an effective teacher we need to be supportive towards the students and

create a caring classroom which leads students to achieve higher and feel comfortable. And an

effective teacher does not spend much more time on behavioral management as connecting to the

first one if we create a friendly environment we dont need to focus much on behavioral

problems which I think is absolutely true. As this all principles are really helpful and connected
to the effective teaching. As I can say this because when I was in the practicum I noticed these

principles which have helped both teacher and a students in various ways and it helps to meet the

goals of both. But as a matter of fact what I think is that there should be more specific

information which is applied to the particular subject or students.

To sum up, I think this is a good article which not only talks about 1 principle but it talks a whole

lot of things which is necessary as a teacher. it not only helps to look at one side but it also helps

to understand the other stuff which is necessary to understand as a teacher.
