Introduction and Statement of Purpose:

My final product in ISM pertaining to ESL teaching is to teach a lesson about Active and Passive
sentences. With the help of my mentor, I will conduct a class and help them prepare for the test
they will take on Active and Passive verbs. Later that day, I will assess their learning by giving
them worksheets for me to grade. This will determine if I taught accurately and clearly for my
students to understand.

Objective:
My objective is to schedule dates to meet with my Mentor. With the final product presentation
coming up soon, I need to meet with my mentor weekly in order to get enough practice in on
how to teach a lesson. I also need to become familiar with the people whom I will be teaching so
I will be learning their names and why they wanted to learn English. Mr. Gleason might allow me
to tutor some of his students on subjects they didn't understand so I am looking forward to that.

Materials:
Lesson Planning Sheet

Meetings/Dates:
2/15/17
2/22/17

Description of Process:
These mentor meetings consisted of Mr. Gleason showing me the ropes of the Excel English
Institute such as how the classes are set up, marking students for attendance, grading papers,
as well as how to prepare for a lesson.

Results/Conclusions:
We chose Active/Passive as the lesson because it is easy to teach and it is a lesson that will be
taught to intermediate students. It is easy because it doesn't require much memorization and
advanced learning. This will be a beginner lesson for me and by the end of my mentorship,
maybe I will be able to teach more advanced lessons.

Objective:
My objective during these meetings are to acquire hands on training from Mr Gleason as well as
other teachers on how to teach a class. I will be taking notes on his different teaching methods
and styles and think about how I can incorporate those methods into my lesson. Also, I hope to
interact with the students in class and help them with difficulties they come across or if they
need more explaining on a lesson they didn't understand.

Materials:
Paper and pencil
ISM Binder
Notepad
Meetings/Dates:
3/15/17
3/21/17

Description of Process:
I will be sitting in on some of Mr. Gleason's classes depending on which one he is teaching at
the moment as well as take notes. In the mornings he teaches grammar to intermediate
students, In the afternoons he teaches writing, listening and reading to advanced, and in the
evenings he teachers speaking to advanced/intermediate. I want to view as many classes as
possible so that I can view the different lessons and ways he teaches depending on what type
of class it is and if it contains advanced or intermediate students. During classes I will also
assist students during class time when they work on group/individual assignments after a lesson
is taught.

Results/Conclusions:
I viewed and picked up some interesting things I noticed in Mr. Gleason's teaching. For
example, one of his methods is to call on each student to answer a question he/she got on a
bookwork question to the class. He told me at the end of class that he uses this method to keep
students engaged in the lesson and keep them paying attention. This is something I might
incorporate into my teaching because it is an efficient method on how teach a class. I also got to
view another teacher's class, Mr. Jayhoo, and noticed the differences between their teaching
styles. For example, Mr Gleason would use real life examples to explain a word students didn't
understand and in contrast, Mr. Jayhoo would draw the word on the board. He is much more
visual while Mr. Gleason relies on listening. I also got to help the students during group
assignments. I helped a man who speaks Portuguese with Comparative and Superlative verbs
and I also revised an essay a man from Puerto Rico did on Maps.

Objective:
My objective is to further view classes taught by Mr. Gleason and prepare for the lesson I will be
teaching on Tuesday.

Materials:
Completed sheet of lesson plan with goals/targets all filled in.
A copy of the bookwork I will be assigning to my students
A list of passive verbs (irregular and regular)
Copies of the list of passive verbs for students

Meetings/Dates:
4/4/17
4/10/17

Description of Process:
During these meetings, I viewed a few more classes and met with Mr. Gleason to discuss how I
will teach my very first lesson. I will leave my house at 7:00 so that I am not caught up by traffic
and meet with Mr. Gleason at 7:30 to go over any final revisions of my Lesson Plan. He will
provide me a chapter of the book that consists of an introduction of Active/Passive sentences as
well as book work the students will do after the lesson. The things he wanted me to think about
when preparing for the lesson was:

1. An introduction of who you are and an introduction to Active/Passive sentences

2. In addition, explain WHY it is important to learn Active/Passive voice
3. Write the lesson on the board, get student participation by asking them to fill in
the blank, get them to write on the board, tell them to read aloud a sentence that is in the
book.
4. Assess afterwards what the students learned from the lesson, if they learned
everything accurately and If you completed all of you goals on the Lesson Plan

Results and Conclusions:

So I am finally prepared to give a lesson next Tuesday on April 18th. I feel slightly nervous to
teach, my main concern being that the students won't take me seriously because I am only 17. I
still feel I was a little too shy and didn't engage enough with the students as much as I wanted
to. However, I feel more confident with how I am going to organize the lesson and what methods
I will use to help the students learn the topic. Much of the lesson will require student
participation such as calling them to write on the board or answer a question. There is also a
game I would like them to play called Kahoot! which would be a great way to assess how much
the students learned as well as make the lesson more fun and competitive.
