Statistics Project
For this project you will work together with 3-4 classmates to design and carry out your
own survey or experiment. After completing your data collection and analyzing your results, you
and your group will turn in one portfolio with all the required information. You will have class
time to work on this.
General Procedure
You will be working in groups of 3-4 (chosen by the teacher) for this project.
Each group will create a survey, experiment, or observational study (to be verified by
your teacher).
Each group will make three conjectures about their survey topic / activity before
surveying (what they think they will find . . .). Turn this in (but also keep a copy of your
conjectures) prior to your surveying students.
Considering the types of sampling weve discussed in class, decide how best to collect
data for your survey or experiment. You will need to collect at least 35 data points.
Once youve finished collecting all your data, each group will analyze the datayou
must use all of the following and may add more if you like:
Measures of Central Tendency (Mean, Mode, and Median)
Calculate the standard deviation and use it and the mean to describe your normal
distribution curve. Create a bell-curve and label all necessary points
Create a box-and-whisker plot. (Find and label the minimum, maximum, Q1, Q2,
Q3, and any outliers)
Describe and evaluate your means of data collection and discuss any possible
biass (How did you pick your sample? Possible biases? Overrepresentation?
Underrepresentation? In short, evaluate your sampling methods)
Include 5 informative facts/discoveries you learned from the data, including some on
standard deviation and some contrasts between groups. At least one should incorporate
finding the probability using a z-score. Explain what your conjecture was and did you
reach your conjecture (explain possible reasons)
Relate to current events (find at least 1 article)
Final projects should be typed and should include a title page and a table of contents.
Each student must also submit a short paragraph explaining and evaluating their group
members participation.

This Project will count as 65 test points and is due on _____________________.
