Creating Smoke

Some time ago I had posted an article showing how to create a

smoke effect in photoshop, and to achieve that I used a photo of
smoke and some photoshop filters. However, some people had
said at the time that I should have done the smoke as well and
its exactly what I will show on this post right now.

I had previously thought about what would be the best way to create smoke in
photoshop, and Ive read some tutorials online and watched some episodes of the
amazing pixelPerfect podcast, to find a good and easy solution for the matter at hand.
Actually it was easier than I had expected.

1 - Create some Shapes: I created some random shapes.

2 - Apply a Gaussian blur on each shape

3 - Using the liquify filter

 Add a background color on the layer of the shape, otherwise the Hue/Saturation won't work

6 - Creating a cloud behind the smoke

Set a feather with a high value, like 40 to 80, and after that apply the hue/saturation on the cloud too

7 - Adding a gradient to create an atmosphere

 The gradient will give a atmosphere and more depth to the image

Final Result
The whole process took me about 30 to 40 minutes tops, its
pretty simple, although it can be quite hard to create a natural
smoke with the liquify filter, the best thing to do is to play with
the brushes and with the tools to achieve the desired effect.

For what it's worth I don't mind that you didn't go into super detail on every step like
some people have complained that you haven't. Many of these steps (like how to
Lasik Surgery use layer styles) require the user to have prior knowledge and everyones results

"disturbed appearence" the real smoke has. Clouds has it too, but smoke usually
has it even more.

Clouds have not exactly the same math properties smoke has, but here you can
have an idea about what I'm saying (there's a text made of clouds, but it was not

This is incredibly helpful. It would be interesting if you could show how to do this

 you don't explain anything at all in this tutorial it is a cool trick...but you suck at

Please can someone help me with this? I made exactly those steps, but i dont get
the sharpness, when i liquify it. What settings do you reccomend for the tools and
such things. The effect is so very awesome, but as i said if i liquify it, i just get very
many patters of smoke, some fields with som lines at the end. i am a grafik
designer and do this job for like 10 years, but i still not figured out how to get this
sharpnes, out of liquify, and how to remove the whole oher crap that stays if you
liquify.

Or you can just shoot smoke in front of a black or blue paper with your digital

Nice tutorial, but it is not well guided. you should have posted more printscreens
since visual communication is much much better than writing notes!!

This is really hard to do. There really is no detailed information on how to create the
smoke. My smoke ends up looking like a satin sheet.

This effect is fantastic but if I cannot do it and ask for a tutorial I wouldn't suggest
this one.
There are some parts missing: Settings for the Liquify effect, the Cloud step was
not quite good explained and even the gradient step! I was confuse if I have to
make that on the cloud or on the background...

Ugg, I spent three hours today trying to make realistic smoke. I wish I'd found this
earlier. Many of your steps are the same ones I came up with, it would have saved

For what it's worth I don't mind that you didn't go into super detail on every step like
some people have complained that you haven't. Many of these steps (like how to
use layer styles) require the user to have prior knowledge and everyones results
 will vary. Highly detailed steps would have made the tutorial four times as long and
seem much too complicated. Not all tutorial are for absolute beginners.

Very unclear.

Remember if you're going to make a tutorial, make sure it is easy to follow and less
vague. Not everyone who checks out this site is a pro in photoshop!

This is great it really helped alot and it wasn't even that hard to do and it took only a

very cool effect but theres a whole bunch of stuff i dont get like after you liquify the
lines became much more narrow and you just say positioning...and then all of a
lyphe sudden the background becomes black...even when i put the render cloud thing up

My pictures don't turn out as nice as yours, but it has nothing to do with not being
able to follow your instructions.

The fact that you actually let people download your PSD files blows my mind.

Your site is my favorite photoshop site and I will be coming back for more. I

For me its all about what is pleasing to the eye. the fact that your smoke does not
look exactly like smoke is the point.

You want smoke that looks like a picture to take one. If you want something that
looks good, put some artistic talent behind it and you get what you created on your

All though I am new to Photoshop, I was a paint shop pro user. I could figure out
the tutorial. So to all who are complaining so much, you just aren't ready for this tut
yet. You need to go to the adobe site, they have tutorials for those who just got the
program. It shouldn't take you too much time to get good at the program if you put
as much energy into learning it as you do to insulting people. Use google to look up
easy tutorials.
Thank you for the great tutorial! It was easy to me, and I am blond.lol Of course I
have common sense, something some of the other posters seem to be lacking!

abduzeedo Secondly I want to say that since this post made front page at digg my site has

me some emails telling me that they had to apply restrictions to my ip because of
the massive number of simultaneous visits.

Also, I've read that some people are saying that I didn't deeply explain some steps
and the tutorial is not for beginners. In order to satisfy those I will publish a
screencast which will show all steps of the tutorial.

example, HOW did you use layers? Did you merge the shapes to one?
