Mathematics Curriculum Evaluation

Archilene OBrien
Math Content Weak Acceptable Good Recommendations
Problem solving a predominant strategy in the
program
Students have opportunities to read, write,
communicate, and discuss math ideas
Students are asked to make sense of their answer
give predictions and estimations; and explain the
reasonableness of their results

Concepts, procedures, and processes connect within

math and with other content areas, and life situations
Builds number sense and computational fluency
Organization and Structure
Tasks capture student curiosity and invite them to
speculate and test their hypotheses. Tasks can be
approached in more than one way and may have
more than one reasonable solution. Students need to
reason about different strategies
Program meets the need of LEP, special ed. and
Gifted and Talented students
Student Experiences
Students are encouraged to explore and investigate
math ideas. Students are expected to read, write, and
discuss math. Students are asked to reason about
strategies, outcomes, alternative and pursue various
paths
Evidence of students collaboration and individual
projects and assignments
Students represent their solution process in a variety
of ways
Students use manipulatives and technology to
explore math ideas, model situations, analyze data,
calculate, and solve problems.
Students self-assess performance and disposition
Teacher's Role
Program is teacher friendly and easy to use for lesson
preparation
Suggestions are provided to help students make
sense of math, reason, form conjectures, solve
problems, and connect math to other topics within
mathematics and other disciplines
Encourages teachers to ask students to explain their
thinking and reasoning
Suggestions to engage all students. Students are
expected to express themselves in writing, pictures,
numbers and concretely with manipulatives
Suggestions for establishing a learning environment
focused on making: structuring time, physical space,
collaborative/cooperative activities
Suggestions on how to observe, listen and gather
information
Materials to keep parents informed about the
program
Assessment
Assessment is integrated throughout the program.
Assessment activities are comparable to learning
activities. Assesses applications to situations that
require reasoning and creative thinking. Assesses
communication and representation of ideas, both in
writing and orally
Assessment is continuous, dynamic, multifaceted,
and often an informal process.
All aspects of mathematical knowledge are assessed.
Conceptual understanding and procedural knowledge
are assessed through tasks.
