Final Reflection On Lessons

From nothing to something, Ive made a big leap in my study to become a teacher. The

glimpse started last semester when I was first introduced to freshman courses for first time.

However, this semester the dim-glimpse was no longer seen in the horizon but now, which gives

a full definition of what is the difference between a teacher and an effective Christian teacher

who teach for commitment.

Firstly, before coming to this college, from a nation that is always referred to as a

Christian nation (Solomon Islands), due to Christian dominancy, approximately 96%. Christian

practices like prayer was practiced in almost all classroom, makes me wonder, what is Christian

education? Since the first semester, up until now, especially from this course, Ive learnt a lot.

Now I can distinguish what is Christian curriculum and teachers. Christian curriculum learning

was explicitly rooted on biblical world view. So, teachers must be holistic and knowledgeable in

subject area and bible. My curriculum though was biblically based, bible was not explicitly

discussed and not much biblical connections made unlike here. An effective teacher exercise

shepherd nature who shows concern more than academics, but the wholeness of students. To me

this a clear evidence of learning for improvement.

Secondly, teachers are people who were predestined for preparedness. Among the many

preparations, the common one is lesson planning. This course has elevated my understanding on

making very attainable lesson plan. Everyone can plan but not an unattainable one. Having an

attainable plan requires training. Now, I feel like this course had taught me how to make a very

SMART plan for my students. This apply both academic and non-academics since teachers were

more than academic facilitators. For instance, the first lesson plan I made was not good enough. I

received many comments for improvement. Towards the end of the semester I started receiving

few comments- a sign of improvement. In addition, when I was first introduced to the idea of

lesson Planning though, Ive few understanding but there are some words that lies a mystery to

me, like differentiation. Along the way, I eventually understand what it means-Ways to cater for

students different learning styles, thus I started employing it in my last lesson plans. Now I

consider myself strengthen and prepared in planning.

On the other hand, considering weaknesses, to this point and in contradiction to what an

effective teacher should be by conveying a lesson on a timely basis, I still need improve on that. I

can now make a very detailed lesson pan but the question is, what about the delivery? Will it be

effective too? In my micro teaching and few other presentation made, I was defeated by the

greatest enemy of all scholars, TIME! I need to improve my time management so do maximize

the lesson each period or day. In addressing this I need to keep a close monitored journal of my

practices to identify progression on time management. Yet practice makes perfect.

Lastly, among the many feed backs I received from others concerning a teacher, building

a sense of humor inside the classroom is vital. Teachers serve as a guide and shepherd for the

students but if you show no care and concern for them they will lose trust in you. In my mini-

micro teaching, one of the sophomores afterwards approach me and say, I want you to build a

sense of humor in the classroom to gain student trust. Now I learn many crucial thing in

teaching. I should not view them negatively but an opportunity to grow and become more

professional-effective teacher. Establishing humor in classroom for me requires more teaching

practice. I feel like Im good with older students than young kids. Working closely with

elementary classroom teacher will be another option for improvement.

Generally observed, I acquire more than weaknesses. I rather consider them to help grow

in teaching. It is only a start of a long journey; thus, the impressive start feed-backs is a huge

achievement that will remain an imprint eventually. Nurturing the current strengths will boost my

understanding of myself to become an effective teacher.
