SYNOPSIS ON CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY

INTRODUCTION

CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (CDA) is a statutory body established under


CDA Ordinance 1960. The CDA is working as an autonomous body under Capital
Administration and Development Division (CADD).

After the local bodies election the Mayor of Islamabad Municipal Corporation , Shaikh
Ansar Aziz is the first Chairman of the CDA.

Capital Development Authority is a body which looks after the affairs of the capital city of
Islamabad. The master plan of the city was prepared by Doxiades (Greek Architects/Town
Planner ). The ground breaking of the capital was made in October 1961.The total area of the
city is approximately 906.50 square Kilometers. The division of the area is as follows

Islamabad 220.15 square kilometers


Islamabad Park 220.15 square kilometers
Rural Area 466.20 square kilometers

The city of Islamabad is further divided into five zones/districts. The division is as follows:

The housing requirement of Islamabad city as per population and household size is
209,677 units out of which available housing units is 125,000 and the short fall is 84,677
units.

MAIN FUNCTIONS OF CDA

The main functions of Capital Development Authority are diversified in nature. These
functions include planning and development of Islamabad, provision of Municipal Services,
land management, maintenance of public buildings, resource generation, improvement of
environmental and landscaping and development of controls through enforcement of CDA
laws.

POPULATION

The population of the city as per 1998 census is 0.8 million and the projected population at
the moment is around 1.5 million.

NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES

The number of employees in CDA is approximately 18,000. Most of these employees would
now be placed at the disposal of Islamabad Municipal Corporation.

ON GOING HOUSING PROJECTS:

For ongoing projects the land requirement is 55,000 acres which would be required for 62
sectors. The number of sectors which are acquired so far is 40, under acquisitions are 2 and
un acquired sectors are 20. The sectors developed so far are 27 while sectors in which
development are in progress are 8.

PROPOSED FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

The CDA is planning to develop future development projects as follows:

Extention of 7th Avenue


Proposed Golra Road Highway Interchange
Replacement of conventional street lights with LED lights

CITIZENS CLUB IN F9 PROJECTS

The proposed club would extent the facilities of club house, exhibitions and activity rooms,
auditoriums, libraries and restaurants.

PROVISION OF MUNICIPAL AND OTHER SERVICES

The CDA is also planning to provide the facilities of water supply, sanitation, solid waste
management, disaster management, computerized birth registeration certificates, eradication
of polio and dengue campaign. Disaster Management Service in line with Rescue 1122 is
also being set up with provision of eleven ambulances which would be increased with the
passage of time.

CONSTRUCTION OF NEW AIRPORT

Presently Benazir International Airport is catering the needs of the most important airport of
the country, which is a capital city. The construction of a new airport is underway which
unfortunately is not meeting the construction deadlines. It is hoped that after the taken over
the charge of Mayor. Islamabad Municipal Corporation as Chairman of CDA progress would
be seen in this regard.
