Lecture/Group Guided Discussion (30 min);


New instruction on how to solve systems using step by step example and list of
steps
1. Choose an equation to start with that has an easy-to-solve-for variable, lets
call it x.
2. Solve to get x by itself and so that it equals an expression.
3. Plug the x expression in for x wherever it appears in the other equation.
4. Solve for a value for y.
5. Plug the value for y back into an equation.
6. Solve for a value for x.

Activity/Check for Understanding (10 min);


Problem set to review for quiz to be taken the next day. To be started with whatever
time is left in class and then finished for homework.
Understanding will be measured through the formative assessment quiz.
Work on note sheets. Put list of strategies on board for them to start with.

Close Out/Assign Homework (2 min);


Remind students of quiz tomorrow and review is to be done as homework.
3.1.3 45-47, 50, 51, Read the vocabulary for expressions section.

Reflection;
Students were quickly able to work through equivalence and rewriting expressions,
but then had difficulty with the next challenge level in applying them to solving
systems. After some practice, students became more comfortable with systems, but
there was still some disconnect between solving single equations and applying that
to systems. What could be a way to show that they are practically the same
process?
