Engagement:

In order to have students relax when they come in they will have a 10 minute reading session of the book
The Outsiders. This reading time will allow students to settle in and prepare their minds to learn English.
There will be calm music playing while they read to encourage the pleasant learning atmosphere.

Framing:

This lesson will be about stereotyping. The teacher can bring up biased or media, ads and news articles that
display stereotyping on the projecter. These resources should be expressed in a variety of ways: videos,
printed out articles, music/ lyrics, etc to meet the students learning preferences. The articles can be read out
loud to engage the auditory learners. This is content differentiated according to students learning
preferences. Through this meadia, the teacher can guide students to identifying the theme of stereotypes that
is presented in the media. From here the class can engage in a discussion about: What is a stereotype? Who
has ever experienced or seen stereotyping? What kind of stereotypes are present in our society? Next, the
teacher can lead the conversatio to the book, The Outsiders. What kind of stereotypes are present in the
book, who was stereotyped in the book, stereotypes in their society.
Students can create a Venn Diagram to compare stereotypes in our society and the society in The
Outsiders. Teacher can ask thought provoking questions such as, Do you think the stereotypes in the book
apply to todays society? Why or why not? How do stereotypes impact people?

Acquisition:
For the activity students will be writing a journal entry about stereotypes. They can carry out the journal
entry in any way, for example can be a mix of wrting or drawing or collage pieces. This is differentiating
the product according to interest. What needs to be expressed in the journal entry are the following:

how they have experienced or seen stereotypes
how it made them feel
what affect that had on the stereotyped individual
do you have any stereotypes about other people?
Why might these stereotypes be detrimental?
Highlight one sentence or excerpt from the novel that shows stereotyping and analyse it

This reflective journal entry will be due next class.

Elaboration:

Will check for understanding by walking around the classroom and inquiring and checking students and
their progress. Students will be able to talk to each other and compare their ideas and draw inspiration from
each other, so it is more student-centered.

Memory Strengthening:

Not only do the students write and elaborate on stereotypes and their experiences, they also have to
verbalize it when speaking to their peers or in class. They will learn about stereotypes along two facets: The
novel and their own personal experiences. Student may next class talk about their journal entries in small
groups.

Materials and UDL Strategies


Materials: Journals for the students, their novel The Outsiders, whatever the students feel they would
need to complete their journal, students will be advised the class prior to bring crafts and pencils if they feel
the need to.

UDL strategies: 3.2. Provide options for comprehension: Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas,
and relationships

Students will explore the concept of stereotypes and link it to their own personal experiences. They will
draw conclusions about this concept by connecting it to the novel and to todays society.
