150th Celebration
In 2018, Pleasant Point will celebrate 150 years of public education, from the first classroom and
school-house in 1868 to the present day.
Following on from the very successful 125 th Anniversary in 1993, discussion is now beginning
regarding how to mark this significant community milestone. Labour Weekend 2018 has been
suggested as a time to gather past and present pupils, staff and community members together to
catch up on times past, memories shared, and dreams for the future.
Following the meeting that was held on Thursday 30th March we have
formed a strong committee who have already come up with some
great ideas on how we are going to celebrate the 150th Anniversary.
We will keep you all up to date with dates that you need to mark in
your diary.

Anzac Day
The annual Pleasant Point Community ANZAC Day Service will be held in the
Victor Wilson Hall on Tuesday 25th April at 8am. We would invite all Pleasant
Point Primary students to attend the service and represent our school by wearing
our school uniform.

Sports News
Term one has once again been busy with Sport. The Triathlon and Swimming Sports were standouts and we were
fortunate with great weather and parent support. At the South Canterbury events we punched well above out weight
with special mention going to Izzy Sharp who won her division at the Triathlon as well as breaking eight records at the
South Canterbury Swimming Sports. Alongside these main events the Year 8 Basketball teams are being competitive in the
A grade competition, our senior team placed third in the PCT challenge, training for Rippa Rugby has started, Jump Jam
groups and coaches are starting to be organised and Kathy has continued the
stunning job she does of Fundamentals and Friday Sport.
As you can see the children at Point Primary have a great number of sporting
opportunities. Things to watch out for in Term 2: Year 8 Basketball continues,
Jump Jam, Rippa Rugby and Cross Country.
Enjoy a well earned break!

Keeping Ourselves Safe (incl. Parent Information Evening1 May)

During the first three weeks of Term 2, all classes in the school will be studying the topic of Keeping Ourselves Safe.
This is a Health Curriculum personal safety unit taught in conjunction with the NZ Police that is designed to enable
children to learn and apply a range of safety skills they can use when interacting with others.
Students will be taught to recognise the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships, and the topic of abuse
will also be covered.
The Keeping Ourselves Safe study programme has three overall aims:
To develop and strengthen childrens skills to keep themselves safe with other people
To support and encourage abused children to get help from caring adults
To make teachers and parents more aware of the need to keep children safe from abuse by adults or other
children
This unit will be taught by your childs teacher with help from our local Police Education Officer.
To be successful, it is important that parents / whnau participate and talk to their children about what they have been
learning. This will help reinforce the messages the school is giving, and help your child to use their new skills with
confidence.
Topics covered during these lessons include:
Who we are How we feel My body is my own Different types of touch
Saying no Secrets and Tricks Asking people for help Safety rules

An important part of the programme is the Parent Information Evening. This will be held on Monday 1st May at
7.30pm in the staffroom. You are warmly invited to take the opportunity to come and hear what your children will
be learning about during this study and have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Positive Behaviour for LearningPB4L

As part of our current PB4L focus on Be a champion in your own life, students and staff are discussing positive choices and how we
can be positive, constructive and empathetic when relating to others. To develop empathy, students are encouraged to become
aware of others feelings and to see situations from alternative points of view.
At home, parents can support this PB4L focus by helping children to identify and name their difficult feelingsfrustration, sadness and
anger, and then encouraging them to talk to you about why they might be feeling that way. Consider also trying 3 steps to self-
control: 1) stop, 2) take a deep breath (in through the nose and out slowly through the mouth), and 3) count to five. Try it when
your child is calm. Then when you see them getting upset, remind them about the steps and do them together.
