Cyber crime generally means a wrongful act committed using computer as a tool or a target of the

said act or both.

Breaching of cyber laws is a clear example of committing cyber crime in Malaysia.

In fact, different countries will have diffrent set of rulings covering various cyber crimes. For
example, in U.S. if you intent to extort from anyone any money with threat to damage ones
computer or to obtain information in the protected computer without permission, you are
deemed to commit the offence of cyber-extortion. Yes, this is serious.

Generally, below are the acts which may likely amount to cyber crimes in many countries:

1. Unauthorised access

- accessing to a protected website or system without permission.

2. Email bombing

- sending a large amount of mail to cause the targeted email account (in the case of individual) or
mail server (in the case of mail service provider) crashing.

3. Data didling

- changing of a raw data just before the same being process by the system and change it back after
the system has processed it.

4. Salami attack

- making alteralation to a system which is not noticeable during a single cases. For instant, a
bank worker makes changes to the banking system so that the system will deduct RM0.05 from
every clients account and be transferred to his own account. The client may not aware of this in a
single case but at whole the worker has made a lot of money form this event. (This has once
happened in Malaysia, I have forgotten which year.)

5. Internet time theft

-stealing ones time to use his internet services.

6. Logic bomb

-creating some damage which only occurs at certain time. For example, a virus is created and
only start attacking ones system on specific date.
7. Virus/worm attack

- virus attack is deleting or amending ones date in a system. Worm attack is copying one data
and repeats it till the disks space is full.

8. Trojan attack

-an unauthorized program which functions from inside what seems to be an authorized program,
thereby concealing what it is actually doing. For instant, the attack may make you cant access to
youtube.

9. Denial of service attack

- flooding a web server for more than what it can handle to make the server crash.

10. Distributed denial of service attack

-the wrongdoers of the denial of service attack are widely spread in different areas.

11. Cyber pornography

- not only means online porn but also include using computer to produce pornographic
magazine.

12. Email spoofing

-an email which appear to be originated from other source than the real source.

13. Intellectual property crime

-pirated software, infringement of copy rights and trademark

14. Cyber stalking

- following a persons movements across the Internet by posting messages (sometimes

threatening) on the bulletin boards frequented by the victim, entering the chat-rooms frequented
by the victim, constantly bombarding the victim with emails etc.

Therefore, please behave yourself when you are using the internet, you may not know when you
have committed an offence in other countries.
