Big Data, or extremely large data sets, are being extensively used to identify patterns, trends
and predict the outcome of certain events. The data can be both structured and
unstructured. An often associated definition of Big Data is in its 3 Vs: Volume, Velocity and
Variety. Volume relates to the amount of data being collected and storing it. Velocity is the
speed with which the data is sent or received while Variety relates to the dierent formats of
data in the market.

Based on the 3 Vs of big data, financial organisations and retail traders can extract a great
deal of information which help them in their trading decisions. Google Trends and
Analytics is used a great deal to look at the behaviour of the users and to identify the trends.
In a University of Warwick study , it was found that more the weekly searches are for the
big companies like Microsoft, Apple, IBM, etc, the more are they traded in that week at
NYSE.

For Quant Trading, predictive analysis part of big data is hugely beneficial. Data from
Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms are crunched using advanced
techniques of Machine Learning and Artificial intelligence to predict the behaviour of a
company or a sentiment. Predictive Analysis allows the traders to graduate from their
monotonous tasks of order punching, to the more creative aspect of estimation, and then
park their capital at the right places.

Sentiment Analysis or News Analytics is also one field which is very popular in Automated
Trading. Thomson Reuters has developed a language recognition algorithm that quantifies
the news items and informs the investors of how relevant and how positive or negative the
content truly is. This allows for a quantified analysis of news flow. These days, such data is
supplied by Bloomberg, MSCI, etc. and can be intraday, daily or monthly as defined by the
user. The outcome of the algorithm are sentiment indices, based on the presence and the
position of words in the text.

With the help of big data it is easy to analyze the hot stocks as per how other people
approach what stocks just similar to what Hillary Clinton used to check interests of people
in US and how important the issues are.. with the help of big data and hadoop we have a
map and reduce system with which we are able to deduce the interests of other people in
respective stocks although Hillary Clinton could not make use of information she had so be
careful before you have experience.
