Subject: Algebra I
The unit I am planning will take place in the fall of 2016. We begin school on
Tuesday August 9th. This unit covers solving one and two-step equations will begin in the
middle of September and continue until about the first week of October. This is the third
Unit we will cover. I chose this unit because by the time we begin, classroom procedures
and routines will be firmly established. I did not want to choose a later unit because I
want to be able to use any data collected for the course I will be taking in the fall at KU.
population is split fairly evenly between students who are Hispanic and students that
are African-American. Less than five percent of our population is white, Asian, or other.
We have no middle or elementary schools in our network, so all our students are coming
from a school we are unaffiliated with. This past year, we had students from 42 different
feeder schools. This means that these students are highly varied in the prior knowledge
they bring to high school. As the year begins, I spend as much time breaking bad habits
and motivating students to accept our methods than I do teaching each course.
Cristo Rey is unique in that our students work one day in the community. Each
day a different grade level is gone. I will teach only first year students next year. If the
proposed schedule is enacted they will work every Monday and rotate every fourth
Friday. I will only have students four days a week and once a month there is a three-day
week since they work twice. This shortens the number of instruction days we have so it
is doubly important that I keep my students focused and attentive when they are here.
To implement this unit, I will be using Khan Academy for assignments and I will
create my own unit exams. To show that my instructional unit has a real impact on
students, I will be checking on their progress daily. The assignments are done
electronically and I get a report of student progress. This system works well for me
because I spend much less time grading and I can jump directly to student
interventions. I can target the students that are struggling and get them the help they
need before the unit exam. I will be journaling about the number of students that I must
refer for tutoring interventions and I will create a graph to show how this number
changes over time. This will determine if the intervention strategies are successful or if
