VETERAN SPOTLIGHT: ANTHONY MARQUEZ

MEET ANTHONY: A Sergeant in the USMC, and native Hoosier from Monon, Indiana. Anthony enlisted in 2007 and deployed
to Afghanistan in 2010 for Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. He has since devoted his time to volunteer-work and his studies in
Sports Administration. In 2013, he spearheaded Toys for Tots and Military Appreciation Day initiatives at Ball State. He also
assisted in fundraising over $25,000 for injured servicemembers and local veterans. Anthony is a first generation college student
and scheduled to graduate this May with Summa Cum Laude honors.

What are some of your most memora-
ble experiences while serving?
I absolutely loved my time in the service
and wearing the Marine Corps uniform
every day. Serving with such outstand-
ing men and women was a tremendous
honor. I will always be thankful for the
years I served, and cherish the friend-
ships I made.
I have a lot of memorable experiences
from my service, including my deploy-
ment to Afghanistan in 2010. I had tried
to deploy previously to Iraq but never
had the opportunity, and so when I
finally received orders to deploy to
Afghanistan I was excited and thankful.
My deployment truly pushed me to my
physical and mental limits and showed
me what I was capable of when I invest-
ed 100% of myself into a role. I was able
to serve alongside military members
from numerous countries while
deployed. Learning about them and their
culture was a fun experience.
I was also fortunate to participate in a
few National Anthem Flag Ceremonies
at Qualcomm Stadium, home of the San
Diego Chargers, to include the 2010
Holiday Bowl and a regular season
home game. Both experiences were
truly memorable!
What has been your greatest achieve-
ment?
Graduating Marine Corps recruit training
and earning the title of United States
Marine.
I was also selected as a 2015 Under
Armour Summer League Intern - one of
the highest rated and most competitive
internship programs in the country. Only
100 students from approximately 10,000
applications are selected annually. I was
proud to represent Ball State amongst
some of the best universities and
students in the Nation.
What awards have you recieved?
I have been inducted into Phi Kappa Phi
national academic honor society. For my
service, I received numerous decora-
tions, to include two Navy and Marine
Corps Achievement Medals, two Navy
Unit Commendations, and a NATO ISAF
(International Security Assistance Force)
Medal.
For volunteer-work, I received the Toys
for Tots Commanders Award and
Distinguished Service Award from the
Marine Corps League Mounds Detach-
ment in Anderson.
What advice would you give to veter-
ans and family members who are
looking to succeed academically?
Set high goals. As Veterans, we must
continue to hold ourselves to a higher
standard and lead by example for peers
and others to emulate. Veterans hold
themselves accountable, so once you
set a personal goal for yourself academi-
cally, you are more likely to achieve your
goals. Take each semester one at a time
and set GPA goals. If you set semester
goals and work hard to achieve them,
then by graduation you will be satisfied
with your hard work and commitment.
Time management and organization are
two big skills that I have utilized to
succeed academically. We all have
extremely busy schedules and lives, but
it is crucial that you set aside time each
week to focus on academics and commit
to your studies. Organization can
increase efficiency in studying and you
can do more with less time.
Lastly, dont be afraid to ask for help
from your professors, peers, career
center, etc. Get a tutor if needed - I have
used one in a few classes and it really
helped me to not only improve my
grade, but to also truly understand and
apply the material.
