West Island School Development Plan for 2009 to 2011

Aims for Developing our Students, Staff and our Community

1. Creating and developing the vision of an International Community School for staff, parents and
students.

2. Developing in students the aspirations of the West Island School Learner Profile particularly focusing
upon students becoming:

Reflective learners
Inquirers
Caring, Principled
Communicators, Open Minded

through a focus upon learning in side and out side the classroom.

3. Creating an inclusive, challenging, appropriate curriculum and timetable with pertinent teaching and
learning strategies embedded for our students aiming to personalize learning.

4. Developing teachers through performance development and CPD.

Summary of 2 year Development to Achieve the Aims:

1. Creating and developing the vision of an International Community School for staff, parents and
students.

 Deepen commitment to the school vision and aims through clear expectations and through community
groups working dynamically in school: parents, staff and students.
 Clarify and extend CAS opportunities with an emphasis on service in school, locally, globally.
 Focus on understanding our community cultures and languages

2. Developing in students the aspirations of the Learner Profile particularly focusing upon students becoming:
Reflective Learners:
 Deepening of Assessment for Learning to aid reflection on learning
 Development of One to one tutoring using e portfolios
 CAS reflection developed across the school
 Curriculum pathways clear for personalised choices
Inquirers:
 Curriculum audit and change to allow inquiry and enrichment
 Experiential learning opportunities extended
 Independent learning embedded
 Mobile technology investigated and introduced to enhance inquiry
Communicators, Open minded:
 Language pathways for students rationalized
 Cross curricular links extended
 Deepening of performance opportunities
Caring, Principled:
 Learning for Life curriculum
 Leadership skills developed from year 7
 Service opportunities deepened
 Families incorporated into the life of the school

 Audit of curriculum, reduction of content, faculty focus on particular learning needs of students
 Focus on differentiation strategies for staff and differentiated opportunities for students
 Extension of career related opportunities

4. Developing teachers through performance development and CPD.

 Implement and develop the roles within structures to aid Teaching and Learning
 Use performance management to develop staff and focus on school development
 Incorporate professional development opportunities to aid individual and school development
