A large pool of engineering talent, a strong inflow of venture capital money
and a fast evolving consumer mindset all put together has fueled the growth of startups in India. None of our present statutes define startups and therefore, it was important that the government came up with a definition that was broad enough to avoid disappointments.
Startup means an entity, incorporated or registered in India not prior to
five years, with annual turnover not exceeding INR 25 crore in any preceding financial year, working towards innovation, development, deployment or commercialization of new products, processes or services driven by technology or intellectual property. Startups employment looking are to scale .new generation businesses. For startups, areThegenerallycashkindsflowconsideredofandnewcreatingstartupsto be capacity that those offer that to opportunity scale are innovating, and finding for growth driven the right and people are major challenges. India has witnessed unparalleled growth in startups in the last five years, following the success stories of technology based companies like MakeMyTrip.com and Naukri.com a decade ago. According to a recent study by Nasscom 4, India has around 4400 startups that employ close to 85,000 employees. Total funding till 2015 in startups is estimated to be $6.5 billion. This excludes funding in startups incorporated before 2010, such as Flipkart, Quickr, Practo, Zomato, and Inmobi, which, if taken in account, will further inflate the investment figure. India is the third- largest start-up ecosystem globally, after the US and the UK, with a total of over 4,200 startups and growing. As mentioned about ecosystem, a startup ecosystem comprises entreprenuer, different kind of financial and non-financial support such as debt finance, equity investments and grants. The government is also playing its role expanding the scope the startups. The slogan Startup India, Standup India has really given the push and the Centre is expected to come up with a new policy for this segment. In consonance with this, the market regulator has brought in more liberalised rules for the startups which will enable towards easier access to funds. However, there is also a note of caution in the manner in which the startups are flourishing in the country. Just because it is working in US does not mean it will necessarily work in India. There has to be some kind of innovation in there. One cannot just copy as is and adapt to the Indian market. At the end of the day, the success of startups are based on how many users they have and how can they monetise on their idea.
The colonial era saw entrepreneurship to be confined by the boundaries of
social, cultural and religious rigidities. Further, the colonial rule brought in an array of political and economic factors that were non-conducive for entrepreneurship. The volatile political environment, lack of favourable laws, harsh tax policies restricted the surge of entrepreneurship. In spite of these drawbacks, the East India Company, deliberately or accidentally, seems to have played a vital role in the emergence of Indian entrepreneurs. The popularity of swadeshi campaign, a campaign focussed on the use of indigenous goods by locals, is also believed to have played a significant role in the growth of startups in the country. Even the period between the world wars was marked by the visible growth of entrepreneurship in India. Independence was marked by significant shift in the entrepreneurial sector. With the new found freedom, entrepreneurs gained the confidence and belief to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. Need of employment and regional development paved way for startups. However, during this period policies were not formulated with any special emphasis on entrepreneurship. Development of industries on large scale was still the focus. INDUSTRY EXPECTATIONS FROM STARTUP INDIA As startup India has given numerous opportunities for the new budding business people to enter into the market. On the other hand has increased the expectation of the existing industries. There are many companies sharing there thoughts & thinking. As the saying goes the proof of the pudding is in the eating and the success of this startup policy will only be known after a while. However, the efforts taken by the government to reach out to Indias youth is being appreciated. When a Prime Ministers vocabulary includes the words start up in itself, it is a huge thing that can have cascading impact beyond what meets the eye in the near term. No Indian Prime Minister, until now, had spoken those words,
