What makes sports so unique and different from other types of physical
activities? The answer is in these 5 features: Season, Affiliation, Formal
Competition, Culminating Event, Keeping record. In this timeline I will
incorporate these features into my lesson plans to promote excitement,
enthusiasm, and creativity so that a love for sports will be developed.
PRESEASON
Week 1
Day 1
1. Each practice day there will be a specific skill and tactic taught
following a game (application contest) that will be played. After
preseason and during inseason there will be a competitive tournament
of World Cup. (Physical Domain)

Explanation of daily lessons in a soccer season
Team captains are announced (give each captain the team's pinnies,
split up by different colors/Countries) There are 28 students in each
class. There will be seven teams of four. There will be a Red, Blue,
Purple, Green, Orange, Pink, and Black. Teams will practice together
and compete together in the World Cup inseason tournament and
postseason championship.
Each captain will announce the team rosters ( decided by the teacher
in advance)
Class breaks up into their teams and establish their goals and
expectations. (Captains will lead this meeting and inform their team of
the rules) Team name (Country), cheer, and mascot will be established.
Captains will run the practices. Teacher will meet with them before and
explain games, lessons, and objectives. Captains can take information

UNIT OBJECTIVES
Phychomotor
After the 25-day unit in soccer, the students will develop the physical skills
that will allow them to be better soccer players. The students will learn
passing, shooting, dribbling, goalkeeping, and defending that are needed to
be a great soccer player The main focus will be on improving their skills as
they learn more about the techniques of soccer. There will be two tests in
this area. One test will deal with dribbling and passing, and the other will be
in shooting and technique. The overall grading scale of the physical domain
of learning will be 33% of the final grade.
Cognitive
After the 25-day unit on soccer, the students will develop a basic,
fundamental knowledge about the game of soccer and the skills involved.
The students will learn the rules, strategies, tactics, and various skills of the
game. The students will be able to show what they have learned in a written
exam and through their journals that they will be writing in each week. This
process will help expose the students to knowledge of the game of soccer.
The overall grading of the cognitive domain will be 33% of the final grade.
Affective
After the 25-day unit on soccer, the students will develop their social skill,
and there is a need to relate to one another. Skills are developed through
game-like situations and working with partners. Other qualities that will be
developed are sportsmanship, teamwork, and positive attitudes. They will
be kept track of on a daily checklist for each student with the categories of
attitude, participation, and dress code. The goal of this unit is to focus on
the attitude of each student. The focus is not on winning or losing, but on
showing respect to teachers and other students. The overall grading scale of
the affective domain of learning will be 33% of the final grade.
Pg.9
Lesson Objectives:
1. Demonstrate basic control of a soccer ball while dribbling
(physchomotor)
2. Show respect for all peers while engaging I the activities (affective)

Lesson Plan
Soccer Basics
Soccer is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players each. It is a ball game played on a
rectangular grass or artificial turf field, with a goal at each of the short ends. The object of the
game is to score by maneuvering the ball into the opposing goal. In general play, the goalkeeper
is the only player allowed to use their hands or arms to propel the ball; the rest of the team
usually use their feet to kick the ball into position, while they may also occasionally use their
torso or head to intercept a ball in mid air. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the
match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes
into extra time and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition.
Basic Soccer Position Terms
Goalkeeper or Keeper or Goalie The player positioned directly in front of the goal who tries
to prevent shots from crossing the goalline; the only player allowed to use their hands and arms,
though only within the 18-yard penalty area.
Pg. 11
Midfielder A player generally positioned in the middle third of the field between the forwards
and defenders. Their job is to link the defense and the offense through ball control and passing.
They play both an attacking role and a defensive role.
F - Forwards (3-5 players)
Striker Generally the same as a forward, though it sometimes M - Midfielders or Halfbacks (3-4
refers to a forward that is his teams primary scoring threat. players)
D - Defenders or Fullbacks (2-4
Sweeper Not always used. In some formations, a single defender that plays closest to their own
goal behind the rest of the defenders; a team's last line of defense in front of the goalkeeper.
Kick-off: After a goal is scored and at the start of each half the ball is kicked
off from the middle of the field. The defending team starts on their half and
must stay outside the center circle area until kickoff. The ball must move
forward for a kickoff to be valid and the kicker cannot touch it again until
someone else does.
Substitutions: in our league you can sub on your team's throw-ins, on any
goal kick, and during a kick off: you have to yell "sub ref" loud so the referee
can hear you
1. No Hands, please
I bet you knew that one. Most people who know nothing about soccer still know that you arent
supposed to use your hands unless youre the goalie. A couple of points to clarify. First, the rule
for a hand ball includes using any part of the body from the tips of the fingers to the shoulder.
Second, the proper way to look at this soccer rule is that a player cannot handle the ball. A ball
that is kicked and hits a players hand or arm is not a hand ball. This means that the referee must
use his or her own judgment to some extent in determining whether or not a hand ball is
accidental contact or a purposeful attempt to gain an advantage.
Believe it or not, there is also a situation in which the goalie cannot use his/her hands. This is
sometimes called the back-pass rule. Goalkeepers cannot pick up a pass that came directly from
one of their teammates. In this case, the goalkeeper must use his feet. Infraction of this soccer
rule will result in an indirect kick from the point of the infraction.
2. Throw-ins
A throw-in is taken when the ball crosses a sideline and leaves the field. The two basic soccer
rules for a proper throw-in are to have both feet on the ground and to throw the ball with both
hands over the head.
A corner kick or goal kick is taken when the ball leaves the field across the endline. If the
offensive team kicks it out, play is restarted with a goal kick. If the defensive team kicks it out,
Pg.12
play is restarted with a corner kick. The goal kick is taken from anywhere inside the goalie
box as it is affectionately called. It can be taken by any player, not just the goalkeeper.
The corner kick is taken from yes, you guessed it the corner nearest to where the ball left the
field.
You may be confused at times in youth/recreational soccer games to see a goal kick retaken. This
is because the FIFA soccer rules state that the ball is not back in play until it leaves the penalty
area, the large box outside of the goalie box. No one can touch the ball until it leaves the
penalty area, and if the ball is not kicked properly to leave the area, the kick must be retaken.
4. Fouls
The common rule of thumb on fouls is If it looks like a foul, it probably is. Too true. A player
cannot kick, trip, jump at, charge, strike, push, hold, or spit at an opponent. However, soccer can
be a physical, contact sport when two opposing players both want the soccer ball. What you need
to know is that bumping or going shoulder-to-shoulder while competing for a ball is not a foul
until the hands or elbows come up. This is a bit of a judgment call and not all referees will call it
the same way. Some soccer rules are actually not black-and-white. Remember though, the referee
is ALWAYS right.
5. Direct and Indirect Free Kicks
-show video clips of "turning fakes", "pull backs", "inside outside cuts",
and "cruyff turn"
encourage students to watch these video clips and practice these
moves. Please remember to get permission to use the internet from
your parents first.
