DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF A KEVLAR 29 SINGLE DISK FRICTION CLUTCH

PLATE BASED ON STATIC ANALYSIS USING ANSYS

ABHIJIT DEVARAJ [1] The aim of this work was to design a single disk friction clutch plate
made of Kevlar 29 and optimize the design by changing the hub diameter and rivet diameter in the
clutch, based on static analysis performed on the clutch using Ansys workbench analysis software.
The total deformation and Von mises stress concentration in the clutch were determined when the
ambient temperature was maintained at 40 C. In this work, Von mises stress theory was preferred
over other theories such maximum principle stress theory etc. as the factor of safety assumed in
this theory is high which facilitates a safer design.

GANESH RAUT et al [2] Objective of this paper is to design a multi plate clutch by using
empirical formulae. A model of multi plate clutch has been generated in CATIA V5 and then
imported in ANSYS workbench for Automobile Applications. They have conducted structural
analysis by varying the friction surfaces material and keeping base material aluminium same. By
seeing the results, Comparison is done for both materials to validate better lining material for multi
plate clutch by doing analysis on clutch with help of ANSYS Workbench software for find out
which material is best for the lining of friction surfaces.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF MULTIPLATE CLUTCH

SAGAR OLEKAR et al [3] In this paper, the multi plate clutch is designed by using uniform
wear theory. The 3D model of multi plate clutch has been prepared using modeling software pro/E.
The structural analysis is carried out for friction plate by using analysis software Ansys Workbench
14.0. The results for stress, strain, total deformation and for strain energy are obtained. These
results are compared for two different friction materials viz. cork and SF001. SF001 is a high
performance, high friction, nonmetallic composite material containing a high percentage of aramid
fiber. It can be considered an alternative to sintered metallic materials and offers many advantage,
it will withstand high energy inputs and is suitable for both dry and oil-immersed applications. It
is not abrasive to the counter materials, silent in operation, it will withstand high pressures. The
wear rate is low even at high temperatures.

Solid Works Office Premium software. The assembly comprises of the clutch plate, the pressure
plate and a diaphragm spring. Static structural analysis was done using ANSYS software. The
plots for equivalent stress, total deformation and factor of safety were obtained and the design was
continuously optimized till a safe design was obtained. Uniform wear theory was used for the
analysis. The material assignment is as follows: clutch plate- structural steel, pressure plate- cast
iron GS-70-02 and diaphragm spring- spring steel. The friction material assumed is molded
asbestos opposing cast iron/ steel surface.

DESIGN AND STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF SINGLE PLATE CLUTCH

MAY THIN GYAN et al [5] This paper shows the difference in performance of clutch plates
made of various material. Design of single plate clutch 2D drawing is drafted by using theoretical
calculations. The strength of friction plate is done by using Solid Works. Friction materials used
are cast iron, alloy steel and copper. By observing the analysis results are shown the stress, strain
and displacement values of the three materials. When comparing the stress values of the three
materials, the stress values of other two materials are greater than the stress value of cast iron. By
using cast iron as friction material is advantageous than using alloy steel and copper as friction
material. The cast iron using as friction material is the best for single plate clutch.

FEM ANALYSIS OF WET MULTI PLATE CLUTCH BY VARYING FRICTION

SURFACE MATERIAL

K.S.ARAVINDH et al [8] In this paper Structural, Modal and Thermal analysis is done on the
wet friction plates to verify the strength. Friction materials used are Cork and Copper Powder
Metal. Material used for inner disc is steel and outer disc is bronze. By observing the analysis
results, design is safe. Total Deformation and stress, Strain values are less for Copper Powder
Metal. Copper powder metal is having capability to with stand high frequency up to 6.5231Htz.
Temperature Distribution and Heat flux values for copper metal is moderate than cork Material
usage of Copper powder Metal as surface lining is better than using cork. Hence we conclude that
for multi plate clutches using Copper powder metal as friction material Strength is Improved,
Deformation is reduced and Material Life of the Clutch is improved. To improve Performance of
clutch Lubricant Oil is maintained and servicing of Automobile is done in Perfect Time.
OPTIMAL DESIGN OF A CLUTCH PLATE USING ANSYS

V MANI KIRAN TIPIRINENI & PUNNA RAO [9] In this paprer as from the analysis result
of the actual side plate the maximum value of stress is very near to the theoretical endurance limit.
Due to which the crack is formed on the side plate during the earlier period of the testing. In order
to increase the life of the side plate of the driven plate. Some of the modifications are done on the
side plate to reduce the maximum stress. Primarily the thickness of the plate is increased and this
modification gives maximum stress lesser than the maximum stress of the actual side plate. Factor
of safety is increased to 1.23. Alternative modification of the side plate is done by increasing the
fillet radius. The maximum stress obtained by this modification is lesser when compared to the
previous modification. Factor of safety is increased to 1.52. In order to reduce the maximum stress
further, both the above said modifications are combined. The maximum stress is reduced further.
Factor of safety is increased to 1.7. This design has highest factor of safety than the other
modifications. This ultimately increases the life of the driven plate. This design is also tested
practically in the lab and it is confirmed that the life of the driven plate is increased. The present
design analysis was done to find the failure region and reasons for failure only by onsidering the
structural analysis. In future this project can be extended to thermal analysis by considering
frictional effects during the operation.

FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF FRICTION PLATE OF DIAPHRAGM SPRING
CLUTCH FOR TD-3250 VEHICLE

SUYOG VITNOR & MUKUND KAVADE [11] This paper presents finite element analysis of
grooved friction plate of Diaphragm spring Clutch which has been used to study of temperature
distribution & thermal stresses during single engagement. The commercial software CATIA V.5
& ANSYS 15 is used for modelling of clutch parts & Thermo-mechanical analysis of friction plate
respectively. When clutch begins to engage, the high thermal stresses & high temperature
distribution generated between the contacting surfaces such as pressure plate, clutch disc and
flywheel due to the frictional heating which is generated in 1.85 sec slip-time. The thermo
mechanical problems such as thermal deformations and thermoelastic instability due to hot spot
leads to thermal cracking, this is the main reason of clutch failure which is occurred in previous
design of TD 3250 vehicle clutch system, hence there is need to do thermo-mechanical analysis of
clutch component. The main objective of this paper is to obtain a minimum safe stress value &
temperature distribution of friction plate by using analytical & numerical calculation.

is the calculation of power consumption of MR clutches. As a result, optimal number of plates has
been determined.

COMPONENT

MUHD RIDZUAN BIN MANSOR [13] In this paper, the thermal characteristics of the clutch
disc is studied using finite element (FE) analysis method to identify the temperature distribution
at the clutch disc in steady state phase. The thermal analysis is done using ABAQUS finite element
software. Later, similar thermal analysis was carried out using different finite element software
which is MSc. Patran-Nastran. Both results are then compared for better justification of the finite

thermal characteristics and helps in developing more efficient and effective clutch disc and the
clutch system in general.
