On-line Masters Comprehensive Exam

Abstract
2

I am so grateful that I took the time to further my education in the On-Line

Sport Pedagogy Masters program. I have learned so much, it has impacted

my teaching, and there have been several experiences in the program that

have impacted my students' learning. Every course that I took in this

program was insightful, educational, and very much needed for me to

survive my first two years of teaching PE. The classes in this program

focused on important topics from introducing how to teach effectively, health

related fitness, games/dance, gymnastics, professional issues curriculum

design, interdisciplinary lessons, adaptive activities, supervision,

assessments, to reflecting.

I started this program the exact same time I started teaching PE at

3
Black Ridge Elementary school so I definitely learned so much from every

course. The four courses that I would like to focus on in this paper are ESS

6100 Effective Teaching in Physical Education, ESS 6105 Designing

Curriculum in Physical Education, ESS 6106 Teaching Interdisciplinary

Physical Education, and ESS 6108 Physical Education Supervision.

In the course ESS 6100 Effective Teaching in Physical Education I

learned that teaching is more than just providing students with text books,

lesson plans, and assessments. If you want to be an effective teacher and

make a difference in your students' lives you need to teach in a relational,

personal, and social ways through your subjects. I learned to put students

first, have human decency, continue self-development, and always show a

sense of being. Self reflection is key for students to have as well. This allows

them to take a step back and evaluate their personal performance. They can

see what they have mastered and what they need to work on. (Hellison

p.49-62). To be an effective teacher I feel that one needs to develop a

positive climate in their room, motivate and engage students, and have a

love for the subject. I learned how to write an article critique that introduced

me to understand and interpret articles better by dissecting and answering

questions in an analytical way. In the journal Implementing a TPSR system

high school golf unit a Journal for Physical and Sport Educators it mentions

how to add a TPSR system in a high school golf unit. This was a very

informative article that proved by using a program called Tee it Up in

classrooms teachers created an environment that invited learning (Bush,

Nikki & Lavay p.21-24). In ESS 6105 Curriculum Design It was rather

educational for me to take a step back in this course and evaluate my school

and the program that we are running. By answering specific questions in this

course and evaluating specific aspects of my program it was beneficial for

me to see what is working, what wasn't working, and how to create a

program that works for me personally. Lessons on how to keep my lessons

fresh and exciting were introduced to me as well. In ESS 6108 I was

introduced to supervision. When I first read the syllabus I was rather

intimidated by what the requirements of the course were. We were asked to

observe/supervise another teacher and provide feedback. Worksheets were

used to collect information on the feedback that the teacher was giving. I

was also required to evaluate and write up specific information about the

class and teacher I was observing. The assignment consisted of a personal

bio, teaching environment, summary of the supervision process, and specific

lessons that had a focus of praise and feedback giving by their teacher. I

learned a lot from this course because I have never been a supervisor before.

I feel that I have gained confidence in this role now when and if it will present

itself in the future.

This program has impacted my teaching tremendously because I was

literally learning as I was going. It was a great way to get started in teaching

PE. I have had a couple years experience of teaching students, but this was

a whole new subject. I really enjoyed going to school the same time I was

teaching PE for the first year because I started out in the right direction. I
5
feel that with this program I had great resources for my lessons. I was

teaching lessons with a purpose. I was not just having my students play

games. An example of this was the lessons in the course ESS 6106 Teaching

Interdisciplinary Physical Education. They were fun, creative, and the

subjects were familiar to the students because they have them in their

regular classroom setting. I was able to add science, math, and social

studies into my physical education lessons and I could really tell that my

students were more engaged and excited about this.

I have had several experiences in this program that have impacted my

students' learning. In today's society a lot of children are not interested in

physical education. So when we teach we already have one strike against us

because sometimes they don't want to be there. Why do they not like being

there? They dont like what we are teaching. This is where our creativity

comes in as teachers. How are we going to impact our students' learning?

The effective teaching, designing curriculum, interdisciplinary teaching, and

supervision courses presented in this program were perfect in introducing

new and exciting ways to teach our students. As teachers we need to think

broadly and get those students involved in PE. These courses showed us

how to impact our students' lives, not just in the class, but when they are

grown up adults and are having families of their own. I was taught in these

classes that our goal is to make our students lifelong learners that have

developed habits, and gain an appreciation and love for physical activity.

When this is accomplished then they can include physical activity at their
6
own pace and incorporate it into their lifestyle. In these courses I was able

to present my learning and experiences through movie reviews, article

critiques, videotaped lessons, self observations, assessments, and final

projects.
