BAND CODE OF CONDUCT

Bold text = Reminders for teacher

A students behavior reflects on themselves, their families, their

schools, and their districts during all school activities and events. In the
band classroom, students must behave in a way that is respectful to
themselves, their peers, and their teachers. Any behavior not in
accordance with the school handbook takes precedence, and the
student will receive the consequences as defined in the school Code of
Conduct.

Expectations:

(The teacher will instruct the class at a pace where everyone is

successful and challenged. To do this, the teacher may need to
give the quick learners a task that is more complex than the
task everyone else is doing. The classroom will be set up so
that students can move around the room with plenty of space
with limited contact with other students. Teacher must check
IEPs of students with disabilities and seek feedback from
parents and professionals so children are successful.)

Band is a fun and a great way to meet life long friends while learning
how to play music.

- Students must be in their seats with all of their materials and

instruments assembled by the time the tardy bell rings.
o Materials: Instrument, Instrument accessories (music,
reeds, spray bottles, rags, valve oil, pencils, tuners)
- Students must turn their cell phones off before the tardy bell
rings and leave them in their lockers or backpacks.
- When a teacher gives an instruction, students must follow the
teachers instruction the first time given.
- Students must keep their hands and feet to themselves during
rehearsal, as physical contact with another student is not
permitted.
- Students must hand items to one another when passing
materials.
- Students may only touch items that belong to them.
o This also includes percussion equipment in band hall,
items in the uniform room, and the band directors
office.
- Students may write only write on personal copies of music,
handouts, and other items that belong to them.
o Students must have permission to write on any item
that does not belong to them.
- Students must always lock their lockers before leaving the
band hall.
o Lockers may only contain instruments, instruments
accessories, music, and school textbooks. Expensive
items such as cell phones and laptops may not to be left
in the lockers.
- Food, drinks, and gum must throw away before entering the
band hall.
- Students are silent throughout rehearsal unless called upon
by a director to speak.
o Students may raise their hands and wait to be called
upon.
o When the director is not on the podium and specifies
that it is okay to speak, students may talk with their
neighbors while remaining seated.
- When a rehearsal is in progress, students must raise their
hands and ask for permission from the director to leave for
any reason.
- Students that are in the band hall that are not part of the
ensemble rehearsing must be completely silent and must wait
until the rehearsal has ended to leave the room.

Rewards for students good behavior throughout the week are choices
of different musical games on Fridays. Good behavior will also qualify
them for participation in band trips, competitions, football games, and
band social activities.

Consequences:

(When enforcing consequences, the teacher must do so

without emotion. Any use of emotion may make the
consequence seem to attack their person. Enforcing without
emotion puts emphasis on extinguishing the behavior rather
than the focus on the individual.)

The schools handbook receives precedence. Any student that violates

the rules detailed in the schools handbook will receive the
consequence as defined in the schools Code of Conduct.

Students who violate the band program expectations listed above will
receive the following consequences:

(Consequences are determined based on each individual and their

behavior. The consequence will be determined by the severity of the
individual act. All behaviors without extraneous circumstances will
follow this consequence protocol)

-A verbal warning
-Instrument is put away or student is isolated from the rest of
the class.
o Student will be monitored another band director and
required to work on the same material individually that
the rest of the class is working on
- Teacher/student conference
- Phone call to parents/guardian
- Parent/Teacher conference
(The parent to teacher ratio in a conference should be equal)
- Referral to principal or assistant principal
- Removal from the program

Behaviors that qualify for immediate removal from the program:

- Use of drugs or alcohol at any school function or event

- Sexual harassment or misconduct during any school function
- Inappropriate physical contact of any other student, teacher,
or chaperone

confrontations/conferences.)

with the expectations and consequences listed above.

(When working with administration and the head band
director in regards to classroom management, I will always do
what they tell me to do. When considering sending a student
to the head band director or administration, it must be the last
possible resort after all other attempts have failed. I will be in
control of my classroom and handle all of my own problems
unless assistance is necessary. Problems that need head
director and administration attention are extreme
circumstances such as continued inappropriate behaviors,
threats from students, physical abuse at home, fighting,
yelling of profanities in the classroom, sexual
harassment/abuse, and other severe situations. Careful
implementation of the band and school handbook will help
prevent severe situations like these from arising.
Communication between students, parents, administration,
and the head band director on these school/band policies are
key to a successful classroom environment.)
