1.

Discuss which one (or two) disposition(s) you believe you've made the most personal

growth in this semester:

Sociocultural Consciousness

Affirming Attitude Toward Difference

Responsibility and Capacity to be Culturally Responsive

This semester I made the most grown in being Culturally Responsive. To be a Culturally

Responsive Teacher, I must have an affirming attitude toward students who differ from the

dominant culture. I have learned to embrace the students culture with the experiences, concepts,

and languages they already know and help expand and build their knowledge. I have learned how

important it is for the students to learn about the different cultures in the classroom and

implementing them into my instruction (Villegas, 2002).

2. What will culturally responsive teaching look like in my classroom? How will I embody

at least one of the principles from CRT (Academic achievement, Cultural

competence, Critical consciousness)?

Including other cultures into my instruction will create a welcoming environment for all students.

They will learn about their own cultures and others as well. It will increase academic

achievement because students will be engaged in the learning and it will help them better

understand the content. I will provide historical documents from different countries that were

involved in an event and have the students analyze the literature and pictures so that they have a

sense of what was happening through other eyes. They will draw from documents and make

conclusions on what happened. The purpose of this will allow the students to consider others

feelings and relate it to their own.

3. How will I use professional competencies to drive the relationships that I have with

students, parents, and colleagues?

using interpersonal awareness while dealing with students will allow me to think of my actions

towards the student and see how I might have changed the way the student feels in my

classroom. This will set aside my original thoughts about the student and allow them to explain

their perspective of my actions in the classroom. This professional competency will allow me to

suspend judgement and give a student a fair chance to explain their actions. The purpose of this

professional competency is to stop the teacher from drawing to conclusions and help solve the

problem between the student and the teacher in a timely manor. I will also use Asset-based

Thinking. This will allow me to use the information I receive from my colleagues to help me be a

better teacher. This will also allow me to use the information I receive from parents and families

so that I can provide a better education for students. These professional competencies will allow

me to think of others and use information to help me become a better teacher for my students.

4. Identify two examples within your content where you can create

learning opportunities consistent with Culturally Responsive Teaching.

In the very beginning of the semester, I will create a welcoming environment by allowing the

students to discuss their cultures and backgrounds as a way to introduce themselves to the class.

This will allow not only me, as a teacher but students as well, to know their peers and be aware

of their surroundings. Another way I could include Culturally Responsive Teaching into History

is to provide the students documents from other countries so that the students could see different

perspectives on how other cultures viewed historical events. Not only would this expose the

students to other cultures but it would also teach them historical empathy.

I feel it is important for students to learn about their own cultures, therefore I will provide
documents and pieces of literature for the students so that they are more engaged and feel the

topic is meaningful to them.
