OF LOW QUALITY AGGREGATES

SITUATION
In our fast growing world and growing population, there is a
huge demand for various concrete structures. The intensive
use of aggregates has led to depletion of high quality aggre-
gates especially the sand fraction. Therefore, many concrete
producers have to use lower quality sands which can contain
impurities like clay or high amount of fines. Such things re-
sult in reduced efficiency of the used superplasticizer and/or
reduced workability of the concrete. The picture on the right
shows different sands from various places of the world. The
differences between all varieties couldnt be more visible.

REQUIREMENTS
The use of these various kinds of aggregate with poor quality
leads to difficult behavior of the produced concrete such as:
Reduced efficiency of the used plasticizer/superplasticizer
Reduced workability time
Reduced flowability

Therefore customers are looking for solutions to counteract

these negative effects when using low quality aggregates.

Clay usually sticks to the aggregates and cannot be removed

just by sieving. Clay can only be removed by washing the ag-
gregates. Using the methylene blue value - the liquid in the
flask on the picture - in special analysis will give a value based
on the clay impurification.

The pictures below show the different behaviors of clay contaminated mixes with increasing dosage of a superplasticizer
(see pictures 1-3). Another way would be the addition of Sika Stabilizer WMR-100 to the original mix in order to achieve a
required workability (see picture 4).

SIKA SOLUTION
Manufactured sands, crushed rock fines, recycled aggregates or clay: Sika developed a procedure to detect the inherent issues
associated with these type of sands. The special analysis of the aggregates/sands establishes the cause of the difficult behav-
ior of the fresh concrete. Based on the research a matrix with different solutions for all level of water reduction requirements,
from plasticizer to superplasticizer, has been created. The first measure to address these challenges is the creation of a Sika
Mix Design and incorporating the solutions displayed in the table.
