Seven Day Time Budget Journal Due Monday, 22nd October

A copy of this assignment must be uploaded to the appropriate dropbox. In addition, bring a hard
copy with you to class on the 22nd October.

The purpose of this assignment is to document how you spend your day and to use these data to:
1) determine if you can be more efficient with your time, and 2) help you balance your classes,
the classes you teach and your personal life. On the second page of this assignment, there is an
hourly log. Please enter into EVERY HOUR of the day, the nature of the activity you pursued
for that hour. If you wish, you can draw a line through the top quarter, middle, or bottom quarter
of the box if you wish to mark off the beginning/ending of an activity at 15 min, 30 min, or 45
min beyond the hour.

Begin your activities with this class and end your activities one week from later (in the same col-
umn of Monday) at 3:30 pm. For consistency, everyone should start recording on Monday, 8th
October and finish on the 13th. You will then have a week, to fill in the information below. I sug-
gest using an Excel spreadsheet to calculate the following and then fill in the data tables below:

1. What percentage of your day (the wakeful or non-sleep part) is involved with your
coursework (class-time and study, research) and GA responsibilities (prep, teaching,
grading)?

Your Coursework GA Responsibilities

Monday: % 19.1 23.5

Tuesday: % 21.1 50.0

Wednesday % 21.9 21.9

Thursday: % 22.9 22.9

Friday: % 52.9 29.4

Saturday: % 0.0 0.0

Sunday: % 35.3 23.5

The week consists of 168 hours. Of those, I spend 48 hours sleeping, leaving
120 hours for wakeful activities. Of these hours, I spend 31 hours working
on my novel, 30 hours on GA responsibilities, 30 hours on coursework,
and 29 hours on other activities.

2. Other than your coursework and GA Responsibilities, what other category(s) take up a
significant portion of your day?

Beyond GA responsibilities and coursework, my work on my novel takes

up the most of my day.

3. Describe those activities that you have found negatively impact your time or seem inef-
ficient.

I do not believe that there is anything negatively affecting my time or

self-efficiency, per se; I have just have a lot on my plate. One thing I am
concerned about is the amount of time I spend of GA responsibilities. I
need to shift at least five of those hours to my coursework, and perhaps
the other five to sleep, writing and other.

4. Describe anything that surprised you in terms of how you spent your time.

I was surprised by how much time I contribute to my writing. Compared

to my pace during the summer, I felt like I wasnt getting anything done.

5. Will you try and change anything based on what your learned from this activity?

With a schedule like mine, I think that I have to do better at planning

my time. It is too full and too compacted to just do things as they arrive.
I now understand why I am having a hard time catching my breath.
