Sustainable Development

Defined by the Brundtland Commission as

Development that meets the need of the
present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs.

Sustainability at ACI 2010

ACI started serious discussions regarding sustainability in

2005. Our current position statement as of 2010:
1) Support the consideration of economic, social, and
environmental balance for sustainability criteria in
concrete design, materials, and construction;
2) Identify and, as appropriate, remove barriers to the
adoption of more sustainable concrete practices,
technologies, standards, specifications, etc.; and
3) Raise the level of awareness and seek support for
increased sustainability practices and designs within the
concrete industry and beyond.
Annual ACI Concrete Sustainability Forum

Annual event since 2008 that includes representatives from

concrete organizations and innovators across the world
Disseminates the significance of sustainability among ACI
members
Collects scientific data related to the environmental impacts of
concrete
Develops simple tools for evaluation of
those impacts

Caring for our environment and striving to make sustainable

contributions to our people, our communities, and the

Sustainability Program Tactics

Focus areas include Products, Services, and Charity

Delivery Process Continuous Improvement is the driver improving
environmental, social, and economic conditions
Knowledge Management
Database of sustainable products and practices is foundational
Documenting Acts of Green
People Recruit and retain co-workers and partners that are
dedicated to sustainable products and practices
Efficient & Effective Program Ensure that the sustainability
initiative is professionally managed for optimum economy,
efficiency, and effectiveness
Top Five Operational Priorities:

1. Sustainable Concrete Mixes Consistently use alternative

cementitious materials (ACMs) with cement replacement up to 50%
25-30% typical, promote range of strengths
2. Reduce environmental footprint and enhance positive impact on
co-workers, partners, and communities
3. Recycle & reduce waste Concrete, scrap rebar, paper, and cardboard
4. Reduce CO2 fuel consumption Regional Operations Centers
established that buy local and engage in the local communities
5. Reduce Rework & Waste Planning, Modeling, and Implementing
Opportunities for Improvement Reporting drives SME reviews and
improvement of practices
Benefits of Fly Ash and ACMs

Fresh Concrete Reduced

bleeding, segregation, and
increased pumpability,
flowability

Hardened Concrete
Increased strength and
reduced creep and thermal
strain

Durability Reduced
chloride intrusion and risk of
ASR

Sustainable Concrete Mixes Use of ACMs which supports ACI, SDC, and
partners efforts to evaluate replacements for fly ash
Fly Ash and ACM Use

Cincinnati Childrens Hospital 50% fly ash mix

for high density nuclear shielding concrete
Fly Ash and ACM Use

Industrial floors typically use up to 30% fly ash

Energy Consumption

Reduce Fuel Consumption CO2 Footprint

Baker has used bio fuels and increased energy efficiency of our buildings, but
the biggest contribution has come from regionalizing our offices, reducing
travel, freight, and fostering relationships in the communities that we work.
Renewable Energy Projects

Denver, CO Lubbock, TX Fosters, KY

Reduce Fuel Consumption CO2 Footprint

Baker has been actively constructing wind, solar, and hydro electric power projects.
Rework Reduction

Rework & Waste Reduction

4D Models are used to verify design and identify errors prior to work starting , and also
on the backend geospatial information from models is relied upon to verify proper
construction and as built conditions.

Electronic Workflows

iPads and electronic

workflows have reduced
paper use and increased
co-worker efficiency.

Over 2,000,000 pages of

records processed
electronically on a single
nuclear project.
Opportunities for
Improvement

Rework & Waste Reduction

The Opportunity for Improvement (OFI) iPhone application engages the
workforce in reporting OFIs that are categorized in 12 practice areas.
Subject matter expert teams review suggestions/defect reports, support
resolution, and improve practice documentation and training as needed to
minimize defects and leverage best practices.
Sustainability Summary
Our goal is to think globally and act locally. While we understand and
work on external issues related to sustainability, we also recognize that
our sphere of influence is strongest close to home.

Our most significant influence on sustainability happens internally with:

*****
Our focus on safety and well being, and improving the lives' of our
co-workers and partners
*****
Understanding that sustaining our company through better planning,
better practices, less waste, and using fewer resources we also take
care of our environment.
