The Effects On Bullying, and How We Can Make A Change.

What is bullying? In this paper we will be given a look into what bullying is and how we

can come as one and stop those succumbed to the evil action itself. In our society, bullying is a

tremendous topic yet it is being disguised in our world of wonders. Why it is being disguised and

hidden from the rest of our world? I have yet to know, but we as one can come together and

figure out how to bring about such a sensitive topic and change the lives of many.

Bullying: use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically

force him or her to do what one wants. (NA, ND) Bullying is a harmful and mean way of trying

to come out on top as some would say. In the NBC Network television show Freaks and Geeks a

form of bullying is shown in almost every episode. There four official types of bullying:

physical, social, verbal, and cyber. Physical bullying is hitting, pushing, hair pulling tripping, and

stealing, etc. Social bullying is ruining someones social life and making sure they do not fit in.

Verbal bullying consists of threats, teasing, name calling, rumors, etc. Cyber bullying is anything

hurtful being put online, mean texts, etc. Although there are only supposedly four types of

bullying, you are still a bully if you see someone being bullied and choose not to help, or you

video tape the act. Although you were not the direct bully you are spreading the act of the bullier

and encouraging the bully. Bullying is also found in all schools, all places, and at all times. In

fact bullying is found at Edina High it is just not as obvious we think.

In Edina High School bullying has been common within 26.1 percent of the student body.

This means that at least one person in each of your classes has been bullied and or is being

bullied. Although 26.1 percent of the student body is being bullied, 63 percent has seen someone

being bullied. With this only statistic, more people are being exposed to bullying rather than

being bullied. Only 39.5 percent of the students in Edina High have helped someone being

bullied, while 60.5 percent are watching someone being brought down by a peer and not

bothering to help him or her. Why? Well in our society we are accustomed to not see a bully and

when someone is being bullied we have taught ourselves to look away from the issue. Our

student body had stated that bullying is not a female or male problem and that the bullies are

merely found as an equal balance in EHS. In Edina High School, the most common form of

bullying is untrue and hurtful rumors being spread. In our school only a small percentage of

people have contemplated suicide but not followed through. About 28.3 percent of people in

EHS know of someone that has thought about suicide due to being bullied. Only 4.3 of the

student body stepped up and admitted to being a bully. Also, only 56.4 percent of the student

body would allow a weird or uncool student sit with them during lunch.

In Edina High School bullying is a problem but it is not as big of a problem as it is in

Michigan, Louisiana, West Virginia, Montana, and Arkansas.(ND,NA) Out of all fifty states

these five states were ranked the top five (In Order) with the biggest bullying issues in 2016.

Louisiana, and Arkansas had the highest percentage of people attempting suicide based on being

bullied. The state of Michigan also has the highest percentage of cyber bullying.

If we can come together as one and create a safe and happy community we can abolish

bullying. The hard part is, sometimes we do not even know when we are bullying someone. Most

of the time we bully when we try to impress our peers. Of course some of us honestly have no

idea that they are bullying someone because it is not the textbook definition of Bully.

If we were able to come together as one and stick the code of being kind, when people

are looking and when backs are turned our society would be safer and happier for everyone. As a

whole we can make a difference but without the difference we will always be living in fear. If

one person started the movement then we will be able to make the change we wish to see. To be

the difference in our society that we are so prone to not understanding and so unimaginably

blinded by. There is a difference between being nice and being kind. You can be nice and have a

bad heart, but to be kind is to be nice, generous and loving to all, with a good heart. So if we all

chose to be kind, imagine the lives we could save and the people we could save from the

embarrassment to wear what we want, to be who we are and to not be afraid to express who we

are. It's a matter of changing our ways. Whether they are going to be accepted or not.

With that said, we will never be a safe world, with freedom and acceptance, and we won't ever be

accepted by everyone. Sometimes people don't care. For example, a 15 year old high school

student was stuffed in a school locker on November 3, 2016. (November 3, Anthony Kurzweil)

Bullies will be bullies, bullies will always strive for attention, even if it means harming or

embarrassing those who are helpless towards us. As said, the young boy shoved in the locker,

had epilepsy. It was said that several students participated in the act but only one student

physically put him in the locker. (November 3, Anthony Kurzweil) Although it was only one

person doing the physical aspect of the bullying, those who videoed the act might as well be

called bullies. Just by standing by and videoing the crime, you are encouraging the bully. A bully

is one habitually cruel to others who are weaker. (ND, Merriam Webster) So, those who are

being bystanders are technically bullies do to textbook definition.

When we come to school everyday, our chances of being bullied increases. Bullying is

more likely to happen on school grounds rather than in a public space. Sadly, teachers and adult

authorities dont know that their students are being bullied, rhus because only about of those

being bullied do not report it to adult figures. (ND, Scouty) When someone is being bullied

statistics have proved that only 56% of students report if they see someone being bullied. (ND,

Scouty) On average a student, whether they be in elementary school, is bullied every 2 minutes.

(ND, Scouty)

Sadly, bullying still continues in the workplace as adults. On average about 71 percent of

adults face bullying by being accused of something they did not do. (April 19, 2013, WBI) Most

kids who are the bully tend to grow out of that Phase in their life by the time they reach an

adult age. Although competing in such a tough and competitive work environment our society is

so prone to, bullying is not a big surprise. Adults who tend to feel threatened will try and prove

superiority through degrading someone or making them feel Bad, or Awkward, or maybe

Embarrassed. Adults who live in big areas with lots of money tend to be stereotyped under the

category of Snooty. Thus said, some people do fit the category. Adult women will tend to be

threatened when a new woman moves into a once sustained area, and with that said, they will

most likely not be very kind. This is common and it is common in older women. But, you may be

thinking, Just because they are trying to make themselves the superior one, and establishing

dominance Both in and out of the workplace, doesnt make them a bully. Surprisingly, it

does. Although these women are facing a typical situation will the feeling of losing dominance,

they can tend to try and turn people against the woman they had an initial problem with. That, is

bullying. This type of bullying could be classified under two types of bullies. A narcissistic bully,

and a workplace bully. A narcissistic bully is This type of adult bully is self-centered and does

not share empathy with others. (ND, NA) While a workplace bully is one who personally brings

others down creating a hostile environment.

In 2009, one woman had a dream. That dream, to stop bullying. To be the change we

wish to see in such a challenged and cloudy world. Lauren Paul was sick and tired of the hatred

going on and being spread so she decided to be the change. She started up her own Kind

Campaign with this, she wanted to spread the word that not everyone has to be pulled into being

a bully. Her motto was, You

can sit with us. (ND, Lauren Paul) She wanted to spread the word that everyone is welcome and

everyone can contribute to being different and being kind. I hope that with all this information,

that we can be the change and we can be the people to make the difference. But never forgetting,

to always be kind, and never judge someone because You never really understand a person until

you consider things from his point of view...Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around

in it." (July 11, 1960, Atticus Finch)
