Lesson Plan Format

Name: Lauren Seaner Date:

Subject: Math Topic: Application Problem/Sprint
Grade: 1st grade Group Size: Whole Group

Objective:
The learner will be able to solve addition and subtraction word problems within
20 by using different strategies (drawings, equations, etc.). The learner will be
able to add and subtract within 20, showing fluency by using mental strategies.

Standards:
o 1.OA.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems
involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking
apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions (e.g., by using
objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number
to represent the problem).
o 1.OA.6: Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition
and subtraction within 10. Use mental strategies such as counting on;
making ten; decomposing a number leading to a ten; using the relationship
between addition and subtraction; and creating equivalent but easier or
known sums.

Contextual Factors:
Rollins Place Elementary is located in Zachary, Louisiana. The school contains
students of different races such as, African American, White, Hispanic, and many
more. In the classroom, there are six tables for students to sit with four desks to a
table. There are also six computers the students can use during free time to play
educational games on. The students are grouped more to their level because
during partner reading, students are reading to another person of their level. There
are four students in the classroom that are grouped together because they are
further behind then the other students. The classroom routine is consistent
throughout each day and only alters if there is a conflict at the school. In the first
grade classroom, the children range from six to seven years of age. There are nine
girls and eleven boys in the classroom. The classroom has different races such as
African American and White. There are no children that have an IEP. All children
in the classroom speak English.

Teacher Materials/Resources:
StarBoard
Application Worksheet
Sprint Worksheet
Pencils
Timer
Technology Integration:
The StarBoard was used to display the application problem and sprint on the
board for the students to see.
The StarBoard will be used to display the timer for the students to use during the
sprint.

Family Community Connection or Extension:

A family letter will be sent home with the students discussing the different
strategies that will be used to complete the application problem and the sprint.
Attached to the letter will be extra sprints for the students to practice and also
word problems the students can work (include number sentence(s), units, pictures,
and strategies).
Suggest parents to:
o Time students for three minutes while the complete the sprint. Go over
with your child the ones he/she might have missed.
o Work application problems with your child making sure he/she has all the
parts completed of the word problem.

Lesson Procedure and Activities:

This lesson is targeted for whole group. The students will start by working on
their application problem. The teacher will introduce the application problem and
work it with the students on the StarBoard. The teacher will then pass out the
sprint and time the students for three minutes. The teacher will call 2 different
students to call out the answer. If there is one problem the students struggled with,
I will help them to figure it out by displaying it on the StarBoard.

Pre-Assessment:
Start by having students work on the application problem alone. If help is needed,
I will assist the students. Tell the students to read the instructions and answer all
problems of the question.

Introduction:
Begin by reading the application problem displayed on the board. Introduce the
application problem and work it with the students on the StarBoard. Ask the
students to determine the different parts of the problem (answer, units, underlining
important information).

Activities:
The teacher introduces the lesson by asking the students to work on their
application alone and asking for help when needed.
The teacher will then ask a student to display his or her application problem on
the board for everyone to see. The student will talk about their application
problem.
The teacher will restate what the student talked about and address if any changes
would need to be made and model them on the board.
The students will then pass out the sprint and set the timer for three minutes.
After the three minutes, the teacher will call on two students to answer the
problems, stopping when necessary (when students missed a problem).
If a problem is missed, the teacher will model how to get the correct answer on
the StarBoard.

Closure:
Students will complete a sprint for three minutes (use timer). After the three
minutes, teacher will call on two students to answer the two columns on the
sprint. If the students struggle with a problem in particular, then we will work it as
a group on the board.

Differentiation:
This lesson is appropriate for six to seven year old first graders because they are
building on their knowledge of simple basic math facts. The application problem
can also help the students with word problems. The activity and lesson are also
appropriate for the students because it is building on what they already know.
However, for four students in particular who struggle. I will work with them in a
small group (if needed) when the rest of the students are working on the
application problem. Time wise, I would give the students a little extra time to
work the problem on the application sheet and extra time to complete the sprint.

Formative Assessment/Evaluation:
I will observe the students and have a checklist with each students name and
mark if each child could answer the application problem. The teacher will also use
a checklist to see if the students answered all parts in the application problem
correctly and complete the sprint in the three minutes provided.
