Pathways to Education
Since 2001, Pathways to Education has been focused on helping youth
from low-income communities graduate from high school. They help these
students transition into post-secondary education, training, or employment.27
Pathways attempts to addresses the barriers that stand in the way of
students graduation and provides leadership, expertise, and a community-

based programs that have been proven to lower dropout rates.28 The results
of their programing have improved graduation rates by an average of 85 per
cent across Pathways communities. As well, over 73 per cent of all students
who graduated from high school while in the Pathways Program have gone
on to post-secondary education or training.29
Pathways notes that nationally, students dropping out of school costs
our economy through a reduced employment pool and tax base, and an
enormous strain on public expenditures. The barriers young people face are
insufficient financial means, lack of positive role models in the community,
absence of parental support, or integration into a new country and culture.
For youth experiencing these challenges, high school graduation [can be
unimaginable].30
Affiliation with Organization
Margaret McCain has a long history with the charity Pathways to
Education. Since 2007 Margaret and her Husband Wallace have been
supporting Pathways with both annual donations as well as a campaign
pledge that they fulfilled over 2 years.31 The records show that over the 9
years the McCains have donated a minimum of $160,000 and an upward
max of $440,000. In 2013 the McCains donated a major gift of $50,000
$99,999 and since have made an annual gift $5,000 $9,999 in 2014 and
2015.32 Due to the passing of her husband in 2011, we can infer that the gifts

from 2013 onward are fueled by her passion for education and childrens
success in life.33
Pathways to Education has also built a relationship with Margarets
family foundation, the McCain Family Foundation. During the years of 2008
till 2011, Pathways was the recipient of a minimum of $120,000 from the
grants provided by the McCain Family Foundation.34 The initial grant in 2008
of $5,000 went towards Pathways At-Risk Youth program.35
Due to Margarets history and relationship with Pathways to Education, I
believe that they are now in a good position to ask for another major gift.
Looking at Margarets giving history she is still interested in Pathways
programs and mission and is willing to give a major gift to their charity. 2013
was Margarets last major gift and has since been donating annually for 3
years. Pathways have given Margaret her space and a resting period. I now
suggest that in 2017, Pathways should approach Margaret with another
proposal for another major donation in the $50,000 99,999 range. More
specifically I believe that given Margarets admitted attitude towards
philanthropy and her desire to give as much away as possible, I suggest that
Pathways should ask for a donation of $90,000. As the profile shows,
Margaret has a passion for education and also does have the capacity for this
gift amount.
